Texans to draft quarterback?

When Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak get serious about the draft after the season, they may have to mull using their first-round pick on a quarterback. Three things have transpired this season to make us believe the Texans may have to select a quarterback to groom to be the next starter -- Matt Schaub's injury, Sage Rosenfels' contract and the success of rookies Joe Flacco (Baltimore) and Matt Ryan (Atlanta).

Flacco and Ryan being successful has nothing to do with the potential any future #1 round drafted QB will possess.

What a bunch of crap! Not another David Carr incident waiting to happen????

oh my god. the way things are going i wouldnt be surprised if kubiak got the ax. just wow. its really tough to be a texans fan right now. a month ago after they collapsed against the colts, i said they had a realistic shot in indy. not anymore. blowout city.

Two rookie QB's are doing good this year means that at least one has to be good next year right? Right guys?

Give me a break. Although I really do think they are a good game controlling QB away from being good.

Build your freakin LINE....

November 12, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Get a good offensive line first. That's the problem with Houston. It's not the QB, it's the pass protection.

With that said, I would spend a first day pick on a QB. It doesn't have to be a first rounder but if you target a good second or third round prospect then take him.

No kiddin, Schaub would be 10 times better if he wasn't layin on his back 1/2 the time.

I'm born and raised an hour outside of Houston so i have always been a Texans fans and it has been hard to be a fan of them since they started. Every year its the same thing, get a lead in the first half, second half play conservative and that gets them beat.

They need to get a big playmaker at safety and a big play linebacker on the outside. If not no pressure and no int makes it for another 5-11 season

Agreed. ALWAYS pick linemen in the first round, NEVER pick a WR in the first round. what have either of those two rookie QBs done? Played compitently? Call me when either of them wins their division let alone their conference.

What more would you ask of a rookie quarterback after 9 weeks of their first season than to play competently (by the way...this is the correct spelling of that word)?

They haven't even finished their first season yet you are clamoring about them winning their division or conference...when this opportunity hasn't even been available for them to do?

Typical blowhard fan without the first clue.

Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco great quarterbacks so far. Who brings a back up QB of Schaub out of Atlanta and sign a washed up QB Sage Rosenfals. It's time to bring better quarterbacks in the mix. Not just a quarterback who is a rookie but a good quarterback that has experience. Maybe if they wanted to they try to throw a retired QB in like Jake Plummer. Or why don't your bring back Cade McNown. TIME TO BRING NEW PEOPLE IN

November 12, 2008  11:48 AM ET

I guess this is where I begrudgingly thank the Falcons organization for going against my hopes and keeping Vick over Schaub. Had they kept Schaub, we wouldn't have Matt Ryan now. Alls well that ends well...I just wish dogs didn't have to die in the process.

What QB coming out of College would even deserve to hold the weight of that franchise?

November 12, 2008  12:18 PM ET

How about 3 or 4 good O linemen

November 12, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Houston has a good foundation. If they improve the O-line the QB's will do better. It would be a waste of a first round pick.

November 12, 2008  12:54 PM ET

as mentioned i dont think QB has been there problem. schaub is good and has a chance to be even better

November 12, 2008  01:17 PM ET

Hmm, it seems like everyone on here knows the importance of a good OL. But not the Texans lol. I'm from Houston, but it's funny to me that those guys will never 'get it'. I hope they waste their high 1st round pick on a great QB with all the skills and can make all the throws. But the most important throw he'll need to make is on his back. Because that's where he'll be throwing from.

November 12, 2008  01:57 PM ET

The Texans need a lot more than a quarterback. For starters, they need a coach who can coach and gameplan. Kubiak can do neither very well - or at the very least can't do both at the same time. This team hasn't won on the road in over a year, they are extremely undisciplined, and the second string QB is a turnover machine. I was at the Ravens game, and not only did the Texans stink up the place, but the fans didn't really seem to care that much any more. After Rosenfels first INT (which was pathetic), the crowd was clearly upset, but from that point on there was very little passion from the stands.

And there are always one or two rookie QBs who make an immediate splash. There are also always a couple of dozen who don't. If Smith and Kubiak are actually enchanted by the success of Flacco and Ryan they need reality checks and new jobs.

They should build their O-line this year, then wait til 2010 to draft either Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy.
