Red Sox ask Boras about Lowe

Derek Lowe is among the most probable targets for the Red Sox and the team has already asked agent Scott Boras about the 35-year-old righthander. A major league source has confirmed that the Sox have inquired with Boras about Lowe, interest deemed sincere enough that Boras has equipped the Sox with one of his famed marketing portfolios, or 'books,' on the player's value. Lowe has never has been shy about declaring his fondness for Boston and East Coast baseball -- largely because he is the safest and most reliable option, assuming the Sox can get him for what they would term value.

DLowe a #4 or 5 starter? I can't see it unless he's looking to enjoy the back 9. He certainly isn't going to start in front of Beckett, Lester, or Dice-K.

Don't you think it's a luxury for everyone when a well above average starter is your number 4? Do you think his ego is so large he has to be top of the rotation? Guys his age do love to get rings. Going back to Boston gives him an excellent shot at another ring.

He's still a good pitcher

I would love to see Lowe back in Boston. I've learned a lot about him these last couple of months and I'm quite sure he's got a better chance of bringing them down more than anything. But why, exactly, would they need another starter, anyway?

November 13, 2008  08:42 AM ET

I wouldn't mind seeing Lowe back in Boston if it's at the right price. If he dose come back most likely he will be the 4th starter that will set up a good pitching line up, like the idea if it at a reasonable price.

why not be a 4?

November 13, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Sox let him walk, rumor is because he was a hard partying, late-night carouser. Has that changed?

November 13, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Good idea Red Sox! And how is that Mike Lowell deal going?

Well now I want him on the Phillies AND want to hang out with him!

I'm surprised the Sox would even talk to Boras after what he and Manny pulled this year.

November 13, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Twenty-Mule Team Boras supported the candidacy of Obaman, thus insuring his clients will take a small, but significant, hit on their exhorbitant contracts.

In other news, Derek is reported to be on the down Lowe.

Film at 11.

I don't understand what the "back 9" comment means (a golf joke?).... but he was already the #3 starter in his last year here... not only was he fine with it, but HE is the one who came out publicly after the Dodgers season ended and talked about how much he'd love to come to Boston. I'm PRETTY sure he knows the makeup of their rotation, and has no delusions about where he fits in.
Besides... with the exception of the rotational setup for the playoffs, WHO CARES who is labeled the "#2" or "#3" guy.... Lowe's better than that. Lester was the "#3" this year-- how'd that work out? The cream rose to the top, eh?

Yeah... they're going to pull the "we're not speaking" routine with the guy who represents Varitek... AND JD Drew... AND Teixeira... AND Lowe.... AND Jesus.... get it?

Yeah... he likes to throw back a few here and there... with the ladies. (He had an affair with a Dodgers dugout reporter and left his wife, as you know, back in '05)

November 13, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Where you pitch in the rotation only matters the first go around. he wont have a problem being a 4 or 5 starter.

Dodgers dont want him back because he was nailing all of their female reporters.... while he was married... which he is longer....haha

November 13, 2008  02:54 PM ET

Does it matter if he is the # 3 #4 or #5. If he can still pitch, and I think he can then bring him back. I am not crazy about Boras being his agent. This guy should be banned from professional sports for what he and Manny did to Boston

Did he really? That's the 2nd best story I've ehard today. Right behind the Costner plowed Ripken's wife one.
