Are Cubs really interested in Peavy?

If the Cubs are hot after San Diego's Jake Peavy, Lou Piniella doesn't know it. "First of all, I think it's only talk," said Piniella earlier today while accepting the NL manager of the year award. "I haven't talked to (GM) Jim Hendry too much about our situation. We had a nice conversation two weeks ago at the organizational meetings. There were no specifics. At the time we hadn't talked about Peavy. I've really learned about Peavy on ESPN. Obviously, a very good pitcher, a top of the rotation pitcher. As far as myself I haven't had substantiative talks with Jim about it." It's clear Piniella doesn't feel the Cubs need more pitching, but rather they need hitting. He said again that he felt he needed a lefthanded hitter and more athleticism in the lineup, pointing out that the Dodgers did not use one lefthanded pitcher against them this year and in the playoffs. The Atlanta Braves still appear to be the leader for Peavy.

BATS BATS BATS......

GOTTA HAVE PITCHING

I am a Braves fan, obviously, hoping to get Peavy from the Padres and re-establish the Braves as a pitching-focused team, but the longer the trade doesn't happen, the more frustrated I get. After reading this article, makes me wonder if someone in the media or in the Padres organization has used the Cubs, in essence, as competition in the Peavy sweepstakes against the Braves hoping it will cause the Braves to sweeten their already sweet package. For one, I don't wanna lose Escobar, but if it lands Peavy, I STILL say MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Is Pinella is bluffing to make the Braves lighten their offer & give the Cubs a chance??..... always a possibility..... statements like this made directly to the press are always suspicious..... although Pinella can be a loose cannon, so ya never know....

That's a good point too, the exact opposite of what I posted. It could be a silence tactic...

Cus don't need bats. They have Fukadome. Just watch out. He's going to have a break out season in 2009.

Braves will back out because of they are trying to rebuild (need prospects and cash), Cubs will re-sign Dempster and go for bats, and the Paders deep down dont want to trade him to the Dodgers because they are in the same Division. KEVIN TOWERS... CALL BRIAN CASHMAN!!

Braves have like $40-50 million to spend this off-season. I wish they had more, but that is quite a bit more than we have had in recent years. Braves should be able to successfully trade for Peavy and sign one of Burnett, Dempster, or Lowe

Yeah, don't comment on organizations you don't know anything about. Like MALattin metioned, we do have 40 mil coming off the books plus a stacked farm system. What we don't have is a solid rotation or a left fielder...

????????? Fukadome is trade bait, at least while his stock is a "little" decent.

My question is which of those 3 would I most wish to have wearing a Braves uniform?!?!?

A.) it's "Fukudome and b.) he is NOT trade bait, the Cubs paid him way too much and if they were somehow able to "unload" him they would have to pay a good deal of his salary.

Burnett wont even consider going the Braves sorry to burst your bubble there. Dempster likewise and Lowe is pretty much a lock for the Sox or Yanks.
So they wont get them, just trying to let you know so you dont get your hopes up.

I can't necessarily speak on Lowe or Dempster, but I am certain that if the Braves get Peavy, that it would be a strong lure for any of those 3 guys to think about joining that rotation. Some combination of Peavy, Burnett/Dempster/Lowe, Jurrjens, Hampton, Glavine/Smoltz (If Smoltz isn't closer or even pitches in '09) Yeah, I realize there is age/health issues with TG and JS, but to have TG and/or JS as maybe 4th/5th/spot starters, WOW, that says alot, even though they are no where near they're old selves. Potential/former Cy Young award winners/candidates at the front end of the rotation followed up by numerous CYA winners/candidates, as well as two sure-thing first balot HOF pitchers in Glavine and Smoltz - AWESOME! Glavine could have a GREAT year with only maybe 8-10 wins, and simply add on to an already illustrious career!

Lowe to the Red Sox, Dempster back to the Cubs, Burnett to the Yankees/Nats/O's. You will be lucky to finish last place... AGAIN!
