Notre Dame AD: Weis not on firing line

Jack Swarbrick met with Bowl Championship Series officials Monday and Big East Conference officials Tuesday, so perhaps Notre Dame's athletic director did not have a spare moment to issue his football coach a vote of confidence. It didn't matter. Charlie Weis wasn't getting one, anyway. Weis' future isn't tenuous, Swarbrick said Wednesday, because Weis' future hasn't crossed his mind. "It would be bizarre for me to walk up to a coach, any coach, and have a conversation like that during the course of a season," Swarbrick said. "They know they have my full and total support during the course of any season. And at the end of every season, we'll evaluate everything about the program."

Go IRISH... Press on Charlie and best of luck.

God Bless America and Our Troops

Swarbrick is afraid Weis will eat him and so am I.

November 13, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Riiight. I am sure the AD's at Clemson and Tennessee said the same thing

November 13, 2008  09:31 AM ET

For those of you that still think ND fired Willingham for racial reasons I will say again...the only color ND sees is green as Charlie will find out if he doesn't get them to some more big payout bowls soon. What he did in 2005 and 2006 (BCS Bowls) is long forgotten...

Come on GB, you can come up with something more clever than that can't you...?

November 13, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Hey, Notre Dame is not the football mecca it once was, and perhaps the AD is starting to see that. Let Charlie alone, he's not the answer, but he's not the problem either. ND's image of themselves is the problem.

November 13, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Charlie can't coach and ND and its loyal legion of fans are stuck with his immenseness because of the contract. ND will be back someday but not until they have a real coach.

November 13, 2008  09:53 AM ET

He's not going anywhere. Not this year or next year. ND may one day wake up the echoes but I think Swarbick knows that it's going to take awhile.

November 13, 2008  10:00 AM ET

As his stock was falling in the fattest coach race it is rising now.

It's genuine fear. I sleep with a gun by my side.

How's this?

While on the recruiting trail in Switzerland, attempting to lock up another slow footed mountain boy for quaterback, Notre Lame HC Charlie Weis inadvertanly caused the Hadron Super-Collider to malfunction. Collider Officials and project Physicists were perplexed as to how this could happen until the realized that not only is Mr Weis large, but his mass is dispropotionate to his volume, much like a supermassive black hole, sucking all things attracted into it. This "mobile" supergravitational force caused the accelerated electrons to escape their magneticaly controlled path and vere towards Mr. Weis where, much like the current ND offense, it disappeared into the void of nothingness, emitting no life or light.

And before he left, he ate a little Swiss baby.

Ahhh...finally, an educated explanation for the offensive woes of Notre Dame. It all makes sense now, scientifically speaking. Thank you, Dr. Baitor.

how is this not bull?...weis is a complete bust...and now he has this contract that the school will have to pay while still looking for another coach...weis will retire in the offseason because of health reasons...they will buy him out and thats it...he's done..

Sad but probably true, the man seems to have no shame.

November 13, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Look at this logically. Who really needs to get fired first, Capt. Video, or the giddy school girl of an AD who gave him what was clearly the dumbest contract extension in the history of any sport, ever?

Wouldn't go so far as to label him "...a complete bust...", since he has recruited well. He just doesn't appear to have the charisma needed to inspire young college players, nor does it appear he has brought in assistants who can do that either.
However, resigning at the end of the season for health reasons would be a face-saving move all around. He can get his leg repaired, try to restore his health with some serious effort to lose weight, and begin to line up a job in the NFL where he is a proven offensive coach. Some owner may even take a chance on him as a head coach in the pros, we'll see.

Well-played sir!

I'll throw in my two cents, I think this article should have had the title:

"From the Firing Line Back to the Buffet Line"

Wow a realistic approach and sound comment from a ND fan, kudos.

The TV contract is renewed, a bowl game (maybe on New Year's Day) is likely, all is fine at ND with the hirearchy. I've been saying Weis will be there for at least 2 maybe 3 years, regardless of how mediocre the team is. Live with it!
