Yankees intend to blow Sabathia away

CC Sabathia does not need the Yankees to flirt with him. He knows their intentions already. All things being equal, Sabathia wants to go home to California and play in the NL, where he can hit. But as a friend of Sabathia's said yesterday, "he is mature enough and realistic enough to know that the Yankees might not make it close. And if it is not close - no matter how much he likes the West Coast and likes hitting - he is not going to walk away from $25 million. This is not rocket science. It is about how much more the Yanks will spend than anybody else." One Yankee executive said, "we have to separate ourselves." Translation: They must divest Sabathia of his dreams of the Pacific and the batter's box by going to a financial region relatively quickly that no other franchise would even consider, especially in this plummeting economy. That means a bid north of the six years at $137.5 million the Mets bestowed last year on Johan Santana. My gut says six years at $150 million sounds about right to force league-wide surrender before the bidding really even gets started.

If I were the Yankees management I would have to get Texeria - as the Number 1 priority. PERIOD. Sure bring in Sabbathia also.....

The Yankees may end bidding against themselves. Also, enough of this myth that Sabathia wants to stay in the NL so he can hit, he wants to stay in the NL because the lineups are weaker. Not a bad motive, I'd do the same. But a lifetime AL era in 7+ years of 3.86 with a 4.36 one this year compared to a 1.5 era in 20 starts and a 13 and 2 record agst NL teams this year I'm sure focused Sabathia's attention as to where he'd like to pitch for the next 5 to 7 years.

Sure, Yankees, as usual, spend millions on a player that 85-90% of the teams couldn't touch the amount they are going to offer but don't you dare let Cuban buy the Cubs because he would do the same. I don't know, maybe it's smart not to let Cuban buy the Cubs. One over spending underachieving team in major league baseball IS enough.

good slinky...just working different hours today so I can comment on some of the articles before they get over 100 postings that I have to read all of before I comment. Most comments, however, bore me at around #50 so I don't join in as much as I used to.

Have some Hendricks. ;)

I bought a small bottle but have not tried it yet. Garnish with cucumbers????

have you forgotten the history of between the Yankees & the Indians MR TRIBE? call that underachieving.

November 13, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Why would the Yankees have to Blow Sabathia? Isn't giving him millions of dollars enough?

well, lets see, recent "history" of the Indians and Yanks...Oh yea, 2 years ago, we both made the playoffs and met in the first round. Our team salary MILLIONS less than the Yankees and let me think....who won that series?

Trooper:

I've seen you make some fairly good comments recently and figured maybe you've started to understand some things. Apparently not, because you're back on this same tired and incorrect subject that you've been knocked around about on numerous occasions.

First things first, he did not have a 4.36 ERA in the AL this year -- it was 3.83. So right off the bat, people, including yourself, should realize that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Secondly, he had a HORRIBLE start to the season. In his first four games, he imploded and had an ERA of 13.50. In the subsequent 14 games he spent in the AL, he pitched 104.1 innings, had 109 Ks, only 20 BB and an ERA of 2.16. That's nasty. Something was obviously wrong in those first four games (I assume it was mental) when you consider they were book-ended by a 2.16ERA on one side and a CY YOUNG WINNING SEASON ON THE OTHER.

While I won't argue that the NL lineups are weaker -- even if only because of the pitchers hitting -- to suggest that CC is nothing special in the AL is just incorrect. When you rattle off his career ERA you're just cherry-picking. He was 20 years old in his first ML season. By 25, he had established himself as one of the best pitchers in the majors -- he had the 3rd best ERA in the AL in 2006, he won the Cy Young in 2007 and, his first four games notwithstanding, was dominant again in 2008.

I can't believe you made me do this to you again.

Overall Tribe...Overall that's what i meant. Teams lose and teams win but the overall is what counts. I'm not hating at all but just that it's incredible how people say the Yankees spend a lot of money but they do it for their fans. Give the fans what they want...isn't it what is all about besides making money?

November 13, 2008  08:03 AM ET

go to a game on a wednesday afternoon and that stadium is packed. Got the fan support and if ticket sales are 100% then why not spend it as needed?

I can help you with that, Tribe -- I was at both games at The Jake. The Indians scalped the Yankees' Wang in game one, they won game two after a lucky performance by Pettitte pushed the game into extra innings and Joba sharted on himself, and then the series went back to the Bronx so that the Tribe could end the Yankees' season in front of their fans in game four.

The Yankees fans want to be bounced out of the playoffs in the first round?

So what is the "overall" record of Indians vs Yankees?

November 13, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Don't get me wrong, i'm not an Indians hater...just that no other team in baseball would open their wallet to bring talent to a city more than the Yankees. Sabathia was a mistake for the indians to let go as well as other players. should've kept him and would've had the best rotation in baseball. You base yourselves on 2 years ago...come on now...go further back.

Thanks Slinky, not used to getting up this early, appreciate the assist with that question.

November 13, 2008  08:18 AM ET

waa waa, i don't want to hear anything about payrolls, the Tampa Bay Rays were in the Series this year..... sure we have a higher payroll than every1 else but that doesn't atuomattically mean you win..... the mets have the highest in the NL and they don't even make the playoffs, so that argument doesn't wash..... at the ennd of the day you have to make good baseball decisions - you could pay me 10 billion dollars, it doesn't mean i'm gonna hit 80 home runs

Mr. Bond has finally completely lost it. That, compounded by the pending layoffs of forty thousand postal workers, spells nothing but doom for this country. Now would be a great time to move to Jamaica.
