Why Sabathia won't end up on West Coast

The Dodgers are probably CC Sabathia's dream landing spot. But there continues to be doubt that L.A. owner Frank McCourt has either the money and/or the willingness to offer near that much. There are rumblings about the Giants and a return home to northern California for Sabathia. But San Francisco is just two years into an ill-fated $126 million deal with Barry Zito, and must upgrade its offense, leading one AL executive to say of a Giant-Sabathia marriage, "I just don't see it." Angels owner Arte Moreno is bold enough to act on Sabathia, but multiple executives said they believe the Angels are fixated on retaining Mark Teixeira. And at the GM Meetings last week, Angels GM Tony Reagins said he could not imagine signing Teixeira and Sabathia.

The Yankees want CC more than anything else. No one is going to outbid them this year.

Good points here. The Yankees may end bidding against themselves. Also, enough of this myth that Sabathia wants to stay in the NL so he can hit, he wants to stay in the NL because the lineups are weaker. Not a bad motive, I'd do the same. But a lifetime AL era in 7+ years of 3.86 with a 4.36 one this year compared to a 1.5 era in 20 starts and a 13 and 2 record agst NL teams this year I'm sure focused Sabathia's attention as to where he'd like to pitch for the next 5 to 7 years.

You got that right. With CC, the Wanger and Mussina, it's gonna tough to beat them.

Yay two Sabathia threads, because one is never enough....

November 13, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Isnt it football season...nobody pays this much attention to MLB while it is going on.

McCourt and the Dodgers have the money. They draw 4 million in attendance each season. Its just that they dont want to spend that type for money because they can put crap on the field and people will still show.

November 13, 2008  10:09 AM ET

If that other rumor is true the Yankees are going to drop a brinks truck on CC, that is why.

November 13, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I heard that the West Coast simply can't support that much new mass: it would shear California off and send it adrift in the Pacific right at the San Andreas fault line.............

November 13, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I know why CC won't end up on the West Coast. The answer is $$$$$$.

November 13, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Yanks are going to offer $25M a year for 6 years. The only team that could try to top that is the Sox or the Rangers. And if they do expect the Yankees to blow the field away with offer #2 which will be so outlandish that it will be the direct cause of a salary cap being asked for at next years meetings.

November 13, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Let the Yankees have him. They are no longer the main threat in the AL East. Even w/ CC The Rays and Boston will still spank them in 09. Watch.

Ummm if the Yanks land CC, they'll have be in the top 5 rotations in baseball
Not to mention the best line up
and a really good bull pen

shaky defense though.

November 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

now if they get CC and Burnett or Lowe or Sheets

it'll best the best rotation

Lowe is old and Sheets has been on the DL 6 times in 4 years. Yankees need health in their starting rotation, and I would rather chance it on Burnett. C.C., Joba, Burnett, Wang, Hughes/Kennedy... not to bad

The Dodgers have a stadium that is pure profit and are in the top 5 in attendance every year.
There is no reason they shouldn't spend the money to get a championship they haven't won in 20 years.

personally i prefer burnett.
It seems like his injuries are behind him, remember last year he was still suffering side effects from the Tommy John surgery he had.

I agree, LA isnt a "small market" either.

I mean compared to NY every thing is small. But LA has no excuse to cry poverty

No reason? It is called the loans McCourt used to buy the Dodgers... Of course he put some money down but not the $600M or so...whatever it cost.

He's cheap; that's why right now the Dodgers will remain in the shadows of the Angels.. LA or Orange County! Moreno is light years ahead of McCourt as an owner.
