K-Rod: Mets are good fit

K-Rod is looking to pitch in the same town as A-Rod. The Mets will have a new closer next season, and Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez wants to be the guy who fills their most pressing need when free agency starts at midnight tonight. Fresh off a record-setting 62 saves for the Angels, the 26-year-old All-Star right- hander will vie with the Rockies' Brian Fuentes for the attention of general manager Omar Minaya as the Mets look to replace Billy Wagner, who will miss the entire 2009 season because of Tommy John surgery. Minaya is keeping his plans close to the vest, but a person familiar with the team's thinking said the Mets will pursue a closer right out of the gate in free agency, with starting pitching, corner outfield help, second base and possibly catcher lower on the list of priorities. K-Rod's agent told The Post yesterday that Rodriguez is excited about the Mets and considers them "a good fit" among the four teams supposedly hottest in pursuit of the strikeout artist. "K-Rod's pitched in high-pressure games, he's been in a pretty big market since he was 19 years old and thrives on it," said agent Paul Kinzer, who wouldn't name the other three clubs interested in his client. "New York and the Mets are very attractive to him."

Yeah them Mets need something. And they need it like - NOW, before their window like...closes. Bring this boy in to pitch and they might just make it to the playoffs. ?

November 13, 2008  06:43 AM ET

So long as he doesn't want Santana money. He's a top closer. He's not the top closer. I'd put at least four closers above him.

yep, great fit..... an overworked, max effort guy, that is about to break down.... the mets give him a crazy contract that they end up regreting in about a year and a half... that sounds like a mets move

November 13, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Go Mets!

November 13, 2008  09:59 AM ET

His last name is Rodriguez... of course Omar wants him!

November 13, 2008  10:11 AM ET

How much?

November 13, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Of course. Omar needs a closer. Has money to spend. K Rod is a latino player. It all fits.

Thanks for a good 6 years with us... Go get your money somewhere else... We have bigger needs out here... Good luck... To whomever signs K-Rod

What was your take on him this year? I had heard his velocity was down. Should that be of concern to possible buyers? Also was he effective because of himself or was it more that he was used only in certain situations that hid his short comings?

November 13, 2008  12:05 PM ET

K-Rod.....I can't stay on the mound.....help me!

Who really cares how much $$ he makes- ?
it's BASEBALL no cap-
closer is a GLARING need for the mets and they have
PLENTY of $$$ to throw around-

he is only 26 (maybe 28- who knows) but bottom line is
he still should have a solid 3-4 years left-
he does only pitch one innning-

when they signed wagner he was ALREADY 24- Totally different
give him a 4-5 year deal for 15 mil per-
the mets are like the yanks- if the guy fils they can ALWAYS
eat the contract & get someone else......it's not like a small
market team that would be crippled for years

Luxury tax. Even the Yankees are beginning to feel the pinch of that Luxury tax.

November 13, 2008  01:09 PM ET

i dont understand why all these mets fans dont want krod. hes a proven guy top 5 closer in baseball. if they had him this year they probably woulda won the division. the mets need to spend most if not all of their money on bullpen because the offense is just fine with reyes beltran wright n delgado. keep the murphy n evans platoon in left and try to get rid of castillo to free up room for the o-dog. if the mets get juan cruz, k-rod,o-dog,n jon garland id be just fine with that

November 13, 2008  01:17 PM ET

It's hard for a reliever to quietly have a bad day, like a slugger can. Tough as a fan to get excited about a reliever.

Luxury Tax????

the mets draw & will draw over 3 million people
especially in a new park.....

Luxury tax is ABSOLUTELY not an issue for teams that
generate hundreds of millioins of dollars in tix sales,
cable deals, etc

Now if you were talking say- minn, pittsburg, etc-
totally different story...........
but the top revenue teams- yenks, mets, boston....
money is NO object-

you can't pinch pennies with a 150mil payroll-
if adding Krod puts them at 160- what's the difference?

November 13, 2008  05:07 PM ET

Yanks backed away from signing Beltran a few years back because they got charged 40% luxury tax. He would have cost them $140M instead of $100M and trust me $40M is not pennies. It is also part of the reason they didn't get Santana because they knew it would bring payroll to almost $230M.

November 14, 2008  05:34 AM ET

I am going to miss K-Rod but Angels need the money to go after other things like one more power bat in the line-up. If Texiera doesn't sign Manny would be awesome. We got Jose Arredondo as a closer too who can be a great player for only 5% of what Frankie will get.

November 14, 2008  02:00 PM ET

I think it is amazing - how things may work out that is. This wouldn't have been as big an issue if Wagner hadn't needed surgery. Though it was already a strong fit with Billy in the mix, now it seems as though K-Rod's only destination should be NYM. What else would they need to convince them that he should be #1 on their list?

November 14, 2008  03:59 PM ET

K-Rod is an accident waiting to happen. He already lost something off his fast ball. Like many have said already with the Latino background you know Omar will be calling.

Now if only the Yanks would trade A-Rod (aka E-Rod, K-Rod) to the Muts in exchange for David Wright, A-Rod would also be a perfect fit for the Mets......a loser when clutch time comes around!
