Payton considered playing in China

Gary Payton's agent was reportedly in talks with the CBA's Shanxi Zhongyu team to bring his retired client over to China, but talks broke down over the former NBA star's salary. Apparently the team was offering $50,000/month, while Payton (a.k.a. the "Glove") was looking for double that amount. Payton is considered one of the best point guards ever, and won a league title in 2007 with the Miami Heat. He would have been the biggest name to ever come play in Asia, though what he's doing isn't without precedent. Players such as Lamond Murray, God Shammgod and Laron Profit all played in the CBA last season after they failing to find employment in the NBA.

Glad to see that God Shammgod landed on his feet. Any word on whether Scientific Mapp is floating around Asia as well?

God Shammgod?

November 13, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Been a while since I read the name God Shammgod. One of NYC's finest who did his thing up at Providence. Too bad the NBA didn't work out.

I know this article is about G.P. but I got nothing to really say about him or this. Just something that came out of Shanghai about an NBA player, that's all this article is.

I will come play basketball in China for $10,000 a month.

And GP is acting like he never made money. He wants $100,000 a month to play when he has millions in the bank.

Scientific map? Thats hilarious!

November 13, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Gp in China ?
Guess its back to cursing out refs again huh Payton?
He was good as the back up pg for the heat in the 2006 finals, definitely a nba legend!

Payton wasn't about to play in China for $600,000. Why can't he go to Europe and get a Childress type deal, too old?

BTW, Majestic Mapp was a better player than Scientific but he snapped his ACL in College and 5 operations later (the original didn't work and four more were needed to fix the damage caused) he was done.

Majestic had skills.

fading NBA superstars are all the same- they can't admit their
skills diminish......

He is asking for a bloated amount BECAUSE he has millions
- why should he go for peanuts?-
if they are dumb enough to give him $$$$$- great
if they won't - he stays

50,000 a month to be way past his prime. Thats impressive, didnt know China had so much to offer. I mean first came all the Europe rumors but maybe this is the first of many for overseas taking big names away from the states, or offering too. Big names doesnt mean they are Prime either, i guess they even want retired players.

November 13, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Payton is too old to play professional basketball, regardless of which country he tries to do it in.

Been to China before. Yeah they have a lot to offer. It's a socialist but capitalist society. There are a lot of wealthy businessmen over there, especially the ones that are involved with the Chinese Basketball Association.

The Army team usually wins the league but these businessmen definitely look to bring aging names over.

Payton still thinks he is the guard who took the Sonics to the finals. I think this is referred to as early onset alzheimers. not sure who has the bigger ego Gary or Marbury, but Payton knows how to be a team player though.

i think payton should take the offer and its a good one too. plus if china wants him he'll probably make some money doing some advertisements over there think more than the 50 grand payton u actually get to play ball and get paid too. dam can't get any better than that. or just wait around until trade deadline and maybe san antonio might hire u for like 100 grand for the last couple of months.

I think GP should get a job working for a Miami local news station as a sportcaster and give up the hardcourt for good!!!!

November 13, 2008  08:19 PM ET

GP NEVER had DEFENSE..... other POINT GUARDS in the PLAYOFF's BLOW past him like he was never there

Sounds like GP just wants to play. He doesn't need the money but obviously doesn't want to play for peanuts either.
