Teixeira deal unlikely after Yankees get Swisher

Free agency began at midnight today. The raging speculation has been that the Yankees will sign CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and another high-end free agent or two such as Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett. General manager Brian Cashman termed that conjecture "crazy talk." In fact, in an exclusive interview with The Post, Cashman strongly indicated the Yankees will not even sign Sabathia and Teixeira in tandem. The plan is to concentrate on starting pitching, namely Sabathia, and - at best - Teixeira is a backburner issue in case all the rotation avenues prove fruitless. Teixeira was pushed further to the backburner yesterday when the Yanks obtained Nick Swisher, who, as of now, projects to be the starting first baseman.

It looks more and more like that CC boy will be playing for the Yankees. Texeria is a really good player though and they should try to get him also then dump some of the playters that are jus BS now.

We'll see how the .219 hitting Swisher handles the boos at new Yankee stadium...

Swisher will up stats, he is a gamer....

November 14, 2008  07:28 AM ET

There's a high school newspaper in Tacoma, Washington that knew this too. Wow, NY Post, great story. Who would have guessed getting Swisher means no Teixeira? Yet idiots still pay money to buy this neo-con propaganda bird cage feeder every morning.

I wondered if the Yanks acquiring Swisher would have an outcome on their pursuit of Teixeira. This is actually good news, though. At least they won't be signing EVERY big name FA out there this offseason.

Agreed!

all that means is that the Man-Ram is going to the bronx....good luck boston fans...you will be really angry when manny starts being manny in a yankees uniform...admiring his bombs at Fenway....

Swisher is an OUTFIELDER/1B kind of guy. 1B not a priority now? CF? Well they traded Betermit for swisher, who was a 1B/infielder kind of guy. Both in the yankee batting order, are backup player kind of guys, but more so was Betermit. Swisher to play there every day? Maybe if there is no one else. Apparently right now pitching is their priority. They will spend but for who they do not know yet. This is some insurance if they get to spend alot on pitching and can not afford the Tex man. Typical kind of cashman reasoning, his big moves have some other smaller set ups.

This is good for Boston. Let NY sign a 37 year old LF and the Sox will sign young Tex. How is that not good for Boston?

Or on the flip-side of "Manny being Manny", they could be really happy after that first year, when all hell will break loose...

November 14, 2008  07:58 AM ET

It's a smart-enough move. Only an idiot would have thought the Yanks would sign CC AND Tex AND Manny AND yada yada yada. They've decided not to go after Tex, and so got a good defensive 1B for very little. Now they'll concentrate on CC, Lowe/Burnett and maybe Manny.

how did not having manny work out for you all this october? Manny is a prodigy with the Bat and when he is playing against Boston 19 times a year, motivated, and angry at the way the garbage ownership in boston treated him there will be hell to pay

please its NY... a city of freaks and for freaks...Arod is benging Maddona...what could Manny possibly do that would outdo any of the crazyness that sorrounds Arod....

we're gonna get killed for spending money no matter what we do so we should still sign Tex too and just use swisher as a utility guy.....

Agreed, the haters will boo us no matter what. ZZzzzzzz.....

But the reality is that we can't sign EVERY big free agent, so they're properly prioritizing. Pitching first, and see where that goes. It's a good move.

November 14, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Here's what every Yankee fan knows...we get criticized for trying to sign an All-Star at every position, and criticized when we fail to sign an All-Star at every position. So we're not real concerned with getting the haters' permission before making roster moves, thanks very much.

November 14, 2008  08:14 AM ET

I believe that Tex is still on the radar and if they can lock up CC and either Lowe or Burnett then they would turn their attention back to Tex

November 14, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Look...they're not going to say they'll "never" sign Tex, of course. This is just a signal that as priorities go, he's not the first. That's all.

Wow- yanlees prioritize pitching... Who the **** isn't?!
