Braves-Padres near Peavy deal

The Atlanta Braves, full-steam ahead in their pursuit of right-hander Jake Peavy, are offering a four-player package of players, and San Diego is expected to request that Peavy waive his no-trade clause so the deal can be completed, CBSSports.com has learned. Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, said Wednesday evening that he had not spoken with Padres general manager Kevin Towers. And if that conversation takes place on Thursday, it still may be a bit before the Padres and Braves receive an answer -- Peavy is scheduled to fly home from a trip to Puerto Rico and will be traveling much of the day. Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar, Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of two starting pitchers -- Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes -- and either reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke). In addition to Escobar and Hernandez, it is believed that the Padres, if the deal is completed, will opt for Morton, a 25-year-old right-hander who was 4-8 with a 6.15 ERA in 16 appearances -- 15 starts -- in 2008. They also are said to be leaning toward Boyer, a 27-year-old right-hander who was one of manager Bobby Cox's chief workhorses last season, finishing tied for ninth in the NL with 76 appearances. Though Padres scouts like Locke, he's only 21 and not yet ready for the majors. The Padres' bullpen was deeply disappointing last season and, now, with iconic closer Trevor Hoffman apparently having pitched his last game for the Padres, is close to being in complete disarray. The Braves have been pressuring the Padres for an answer by Friday, when the free agent market opens, because they need at least two starters -- and they want to know whether Peavy will be a Brave before they dive in.

I'm not sure what is more agonizing for Padres fans, the FACT that Peavy is going to be somewhere else soon, or the media's on-again, off-again reports of the deal with the Braves.

November 14, 2008  07:37 AM ET

I hear ya, ECK. It's gotta be painful for the fans to see the Padres giving up two of the most popular faces of the franchise. But at least it sounds like a framework of a trade is in place to bring this to a conclusion. That's gotta bring some comfort to the "Where will he end up?" crowd. But I know I won't believe anything until the deal is completed. Rumors are just that...

Hopefully this trade or the movement thereafter involves in the Braves getting rid of Mike Hampton.

November 14, 2008  08:56 AM ET

C-Smith...It'll never happen. The Braves front office is a "sucker" for Hampton, but hey, we can all wish, can't we?

November 14, 2008  09:01 AM ET

I don't blame the Padres for wanting Morton over Reyes..... Morton is inconsistent, but shows flashes of brilliance, while Reyes is just a stiff..... Boyer is a middle reliever.... an innings eater..... no loss there, they are a dime a dozen.... Escobar is an enigma..... he shows flashes of brilliance, but sometimes last year he just seemed out of it..... not sure if he will have a break out season next year or wash out..... could go either way.....

Atl. Giving up the farm?

November 14, 2008  09:24 AM ET

we all know that solid pitching wins in baseball and if this goes through the braves will have a nice center peice for at least the next 4 years. plus, the addition of peavy without spending any of our free $45 - $50 million could really attract another top free agent starter or 2, like burnett, lowe or garland. then with the return of jurjjens, campillo and emerging star hanson, mixed in with the possible return of hudson late in the season, not to mention the chances of bringing back smoltz, glavine, and maybe hampton would give the braves one heck of a group to pick 5 starters from.

I dont see Peavy going for this now that the trade includes yunel Escobar. He was already weary of the Braves chances next season and then has said if the trade includes Escobar he will be less inclined to waive the no trade clause for this deal. But if it somehow does happen I am curious about the Braves long standing issue with giving players a no trade clause. Aside from that the Braves still need at least another starter, power hitting left fielder, and now a SS.

This story is bogus people. It was confirmed last night on foxsports.com that a deal between the Padres and Braves is no where close to being done. Peavy wants to play for the Cubs, not the Braves as Peavy's agent found out after Peavy returned home from vacation. The Padres are asking way too much from the Braves. As of this morning, Frank Wren ( GM of the Braves ) is turning his attention towards Ryan Demster, Derek Lowe, and/or AJ Burnett. Check out mlbtraderumors.com for the real news.

I remember when T&R used to actually be worth reading... this news is from Wednesday, posted here Friday morning... way to be on top of things.

This deal has been so on and off it is ridiculous.

Lillibridge showed some promise at SS..... and played quite a bit last year with Escobar's injury issues last year..... I don't see Escobar being a deal breaker..... they will need to work out the no trade clause issue.....

Good point on Lilibridge, but the Braves management arent too happy with him right now because he slowed up at Triple A last year and then decided not to play any winter ball this year. So they have pretty much said if Escobar is dealt then they would have to go outside the organization via trade. I think Lilibridge is still at least a year away, but he could surprise.

I hope they don't give up everything...

November 14, 2008  01:12 PM ET

I don't think they will. That is not Atl.'s MO.

November 14, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Get the deal done already so the Braves can focus on spending the 45 million they have. (So strange to have $$ heading into free agency if your a Brave's fan. I hear the Braves are considering Furcal or Renteria returning if Escobar gets traded.

Interesting..... Lillibridge did well after a slow start..... but I agree, he may not be ready to start..... to be honest, I wasn't happy at all with Escobar last year..... I felt like he was mailing in the last half of the season..... maybe injuries were the big factor, but he lacked the energy he had in 2007..... I'm concerned about his emotional maturity......

1chillymnfan, the best part about my suffering is the sad fact I'm also an Oakland Raiders fan. At this point, in terms of front office decisions and actual performance on the field, the Padres would beat the Raiders in football, and the Raiders would beat the Padres in baseball.

Braves end Peavy trade talks
From staff reports

Sunday, November 16, 2008

The Braves have ended negotiations with the San Diego Padres to obtain pitching ace Jake Peavy, according to Braves general manager Frank Wren.

Wren told the AJC he has informed Padres GM Kevin Towers of the decision. Wren said the team will continue to pursue starting pitching, it???s main offseason goal and could not wait on the Padres.

Starting today, Major league baseball teams can make offers to free agents previously with other teams.
