Free-agent targets A look at players the Rangers could pursue in free agency. Starting pitchers Brad Penny: Injuries derailed him in 2008. Oklahoma native was an All-Star in 2006 and 2007. Freddy Garcia: The Rangers expressed some interest before he signed with Tigers late last season. Only 14 starts past two years. Ben Sheets: Highland Park resident was injured late in 2008. He'll get a rich deal, but maybe not as rich. Relievers Brian Fuentes: Rangers linked to lefty, who was a craftsman at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Chad Cordero: Coming off shoulder surgery; the Rangers have asked for his medical records. Eddie Guardado: If he decides to pitch another season, the Rangers would love to have his veteran presence. Third basemen Casey Blake: Will likely be due a multiyear contract, something the Rangers don't want to offer. Joe Crede: He could be had on a one-year deal. Bad back, iffy average are concerns. Nomar Garciaparra: He's considering retirement because of injuries. Wife, Mia Hamm, has Texas roots.

...And even if the Rangers could sign ALL those players, well, they're still the Rangers.

In this order, the Rangers should sign these players: Sheets, Wood, and Nomar. I could also see a trade for Bronson Arroyo working here and maybe bringing back Milton Bradley. Nomar would give you a dh and an occasional spot start in the infield somewhere. Sheets comes in with a multi-year deal to replace to Millwood deal that will go away after the season (thank God). Wood becomes the closer moving Cj Wilson back to the setup role. Arroyo becomes your number two with Padilla, Sheets, Millwood, and Matt Harrison. Not great but very competetive and with 2010 you go for it, you have the young studs up and money to spend. Padilla and Millwood off the books that year. But like you said, they are still the Rangers.

And they are still more interesting to watch than anything Minnesota has to offer. Twins still having their fire sale up there?

Why would any reasonable GM want Nomar? Seriously, why? Can't field, can't hit, all he would do at this point is keep the team doctors occupied.

Hmmm, I don't remember the last time Texas was even in the hunt for a division title, let alone win one or two.
And what is this about a fire sale?!? Some Young trade rumors and all of a sudden there's a fire sale? I must have missed the memo on that one...

^^^Actually, they had two silver sluggers and an pretty good young pitcher named... uhhh... Liriano.... I'd rather watch him than Millwood any day. George Bush did the same thing to the Rangers that he did to the United States: screwed them up for a LOOOONG time

D'oh! My bad. Back when Juan Gone and Pudge were playing for them. Those were the days...

Well as a former employee of the Texas Rangers, i would love for them to be competitive but Tom Hicks donates more money to the University of Texas than he does to Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels to put together a good team. Ben Sheets and Brad Penny are right up the Rangers alley injured and under performed expectations. Maybe Kerry wood would have a good impact but he is too good to be playing for Texas (although he is from DFW?) Plus we must keep minor league players bc they are more valuable. Give me a break. Trade a couple of these guys like Thomas Diamond and Eric Hurley and maybe throw in Marlon Byrd to get a number 3 starter like Bronson Arroyo or Ian Snell or how about Edwin Jackson.

Texas needs pitching. Those chumps on the list in the article ain't gonna help much.

They must like his obsessive-compulsive disorder thingy with the batting gloves. Dude drives me nuts !!!

If the Rangers get ALL of the players on this then they would contend, easy.
