Hoffman's agent expects Tigers to call

Now that the negotiating period is underway, the agent for closer Trevor Hoffman expects to hear from the Tigers soon. Several closers may still become available via trade. Seattle could deal away Michigan native J.J. Putz as part of its rebuilding effort. Baltimore's George Sherrill and Pittsburgh's Matt Capps may be moved, as well, but the prices would be steep because neither is close to free agency. Tigers club president/general manager Dave Dombrowski has said he believes the team's farm system will produce a closer for the 2010 season. So, he is unlikely to pursue free agents Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, who are expected to receive multiyear deals at more than $10 million per annum.

You may see more Padres fans at Tigers game than Padres games in 2009 then...

Not a good weather move .....you may want to find another option Trevor

Agreed. Detroit is hardly all sunshine and rainbows like San Diego. But I think there's more pressing problems with the Tigers than where they play.

I think that Mr. Hoffman could handle the cold, sleet, snow of a Michigan Apri with a few million dollars to keep him warm.

It would be a good way for the Tigers to go at this point.

November 14, 2008  08:20 AM ET

sigh...
I don't know. Detroit needs alot more than Hoffman. and although Hoffman has recovered before from years like he had last there comes a time, when at especially his age, where you just can't recover anymore. I still would rather see Lyon in our Pen, but the Vet presence of Hoffman would be helpful none the less. If we for some reason went after both Lyon and Hoffman I would be elated, Lyon to set up and Hoff to shut em down would be great- but I think I am just wishful thinking right now...

Hey, it's just about the Holiday Season, and wishful thinking is not only allowed, but encouraged!

Does Detroit need a one or two out middle reliever?

Ouch! **** Cards fans- don't you have a drink or something that your supposed to be getting LaRussa!

Go for it if you want a 41 year old closer who has seen his ERA rise over 70 points in each of the last two years. Leyland may need a case of sour mash if Detroit goes into next season with Hoffman as their closer.

We did land Cabrera last Christmas...

Let's hope our next move is less like the Renteria move and more like ... ummm... lets just hope its a good move.

I am hoping for the non Renteria 2 extra picks move and any additions via free agency. Time to stock the farm, not further gut it...

The problems with the Padres are a mountain range compared to the ant hill problems with Detroit.

detroit has some holes, but it will be interesting to see what happens with the pitching now that they have a good pitching coach. the offense will always be there

I heard Detroit was talking to Kerry Wood about a performance based contract.

I think that's the better move. He wasn't a top closer last year; but, he was a very solid closer. I'm surprised the Cubs are letting him walk.

He wants too much $$$ and he's perennially injured. I've witnessed his career of half seasons.
