June Jones suspends 17 SMU players

SMU coach June Jones said Thursday that the suspensions of three starters were among 17 suspensions handed down throughout the season, mainly for the "three strikes" policy. Several players involved were redshirts and reserves, but having three starters - receivers Emmanuel Sanders, and Aldrick Robinson and linebacker Justin Smart - reach "three strikes" magnified the situation. Actually, Jones preferred to call them three "compromising situations" instead of "strikes," yet the message was the same. "They're expected to go to class, be on time and not miss practice, meetings and study hall," Jones said. It's all a part of Jones' plan to build a "culture of winning" at SMU. In 20 years, the Mustangs have had just one season above .500. During his last four years at Hawaii, Jones said he didn't have any suspensions. The first two years, however, were a different story.

Good for Jones. Once they understand he means business, there will be less overall issues. I like Jones, and hope he can rebuild that program.

Jones looked better and happier in a Hawaiian shirt.

What is the deal with SMU? Smack dab in the middle of one of the hottest recruiting grounds and they can't seem to get it going. The death penalty was 25yrs ago!!! Jones is a good coach, you would think they would respond better.

November 14, 2008  08:14 AM ET

I know they gave him a boatload of money but why leave Hawaii for SMfreakinU? Surely some other school would have come along with a bigger profile and just as big a checkbook.

Forgot to add..obviously these aren't guys that he recruited so he eeds to be cut some slack. And I guess if he can turn that program around then the BCS schools would have to come knocking on his door.

Yup. Hawaii got him noticed enough to get him back to the main-land. Turning SMU into a winner will land him a HUGE paycheck

June is definitely trying to get SMU on the right track. He has put the school and education ahead of these athletes that aren't smart enough to take advantage of a FREE education. Too bad more coaches don't take the same approach!!

Good for him. Whip those clowns into shape.

Not at first...

Welcome to SMU coach... Good move on this one though... To get SMU in any kind of decent shape.... Gotta crack the whip

I live in the Dallas area and there's definitely a buzz about his presence here. He's picked up some decent recruits but got a late start last year when he was hired. Additionally, he inherited a debacle of a football program so it's gonna take some time but he'll gitter done. He played a lot of true freshman and sophomores this year learning a completely new system. He can still assemble a good team from Texas',TT,A&M's and Oklahoma's leftover recruiting crumbs. Great campus...

Good going Coach Jones

I like this move by Jones. You are going to school for free with the athletic scholarships they receive, they should no that the university is out to get players and all players have to act responsible because the university does not want their image tarnished.

November 14, 2008  01:10 PM ET

As soon as June got to SMU, he didn't like the quarterback and there was an issue with a high school commit wining that he wants his scholorship. June is cleaning house with the scrubs left behind. Give him 2-3 more years for him to bring in his own recruiting class.

I'm glad that SMU spent some money on June. Now that just need to stay out of his way.

November 14, 2008  01:38 PM ET

It's also easier to do when you're 1-9 rather than if you're 9-1...he'll make it happen.

November 14, 2008  01:57 PM ET

This is what winners do, HOLD PLAYERS ACCOUNTABLE!

November 14, 2008  08:47 PM ET

Spam X6........MENTORING, LEADERSHIP, SETTING AN EXAMPLE.........I like this guy! Oh, did I mention.....not putting up with malingering?

November 14, 2008  10:32 PM ET

He should stick with the Hawaiian shirt and the cheer leaders should were hulas!

November 15, 2008  10:31 AM ET

June Jones is a winner. He will not tolerate losers....which is the current situation at SMU. Give him 3 years and he will have SMU back in the top 25 nationally. GOOD FOR YOU....AND GOOD FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

June Jones is the man!

When Akey came to Idaho he dismissed 18 players for Shenanigans. It put them back from bad to pathetic, but I think it will eventually pay off. Now for Jones and SMU it will payoff much quicker because of the quality of players in Texas.

Stick with Jones and the herd will come thundering back.
