Auburn's Tuberville in trouble?

By all accounts, Auburn's football recruiting has held up well despite a disappointing record and talk about Tommy Tuberville's future, but that good fortune figures to last only so long without some sort of resolution. Circle Dec. 1 on your calendar. That's the Monday after the Auburn-Alabama game, the first day coaches can visit recruits in their homes and perhaps the day Tuberville sits down with university President Jay Gogue to map the future of the football program. All three are intertwined and could have lasting impact on the football program. Gogue has said he will talk with Tuberville after the season, and that means enemy agents have another two weeks to raise doubt in the minds of recruits. Gogue could stop such talk next week, well before the Iron Bowl, by meeting with Tuberville if he chose to do so. Would a win over Alabama change anyone's opinion, considering Tuberville has beaten Alabama six straight times? Would an endorsement next week help recruiting? Sure it would.

Tubs is intentionally running this program into the ground. Call it late payback for Jetgate. There will be plenty of jobs available for him (can you say Clemson) and his renegotiated deals pays him a bundle for getting canned.

November 14, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Phillip Marshal, who knows his stuff when it comes to Auburn and particularly Tubs, has been indicating that it has been decided that Tommy will be back next year with the opportunity to turn things around. Apparently, Clemson was flirting with the idea of bringing Tub on and helping Auburn out with the 6 mil buyout, but those talks fell through.

All jokes aside, does it really seem that Tubs is still your guy? Every time I hear him talk it seems as if he is going through the motions. I just don't get the sense that he is interested in turning anything around, despite the coach-speak. The ridiculous buyout is effective, but in a very destructive way. I get a sense that both want out and neither can afford it.

November 14, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Given the current economy, it's unlikely they'll can Tubbs outright. He has an ironclad $6 mil buyout, and the powers-that-be behind any ouster would have trouble coughing that up right now.

More likely than not, Tubbs will throw another assistant or two under the bus and buy himself another year.

November 14, 2008  09:30 AM ET

It is sad when you beat your big rival 6 straight years and they still call for your head.

The problems have been there since 'jet-gate' a few years back. Tubs will be coaching the Tigers next year, but it will be a team in the ACC

Let's see, Bowden fired...check. Fulmer fired...check. Tubberville fired....only a matter of time.
Alabama undefeated and we got 3 coaches fired along the way!

Alabama hasn't done anything to speak of since 1992. Now that the "Tide" has thrown the cash at Nick Saban and is undefeated this season, Bama fans are arrogantly running their mouths. Alabama's strength of schedule is 84th out of 119 FBS teams. I can't wait to hear the silence once Florida's already sealed up a berth in the BCS title game by halftime of the SEC Championship game.

Bama can thank the two crappy teams in MS for there strength of schedule.

I guess they can, among other schools. However, I'm an LSU alum, so I don't see what that has to do with schools in Mississippi.

btw, i believed florida to be the best team at the start of the year, and they sure look like now. The fact of the matter is that bama has cleared every obstacle and control their own destiny, whereas the gators faltered and are not guranteed a spot in the nc(though most likely) if they win out

True. Saban deserves all of the credit for reviving the LSU program. We did, however, win another title without him and continue to recruit well under Les Miles, who turned down a chance to return to Michigan to stay here in the most competetive conference in America. Hopefully, when Saban bolts for more cash, Alabama can remain competetive also. It's exciting when the competition in the SEC is stout.

November 14, 2008  11:13 AM ET

that was my hope when saban was hired. maybe he stays for awhile maybe he doesn't, but as long as he does for bama what he did for lsu i'll be alright with it. Stout doesn't describe it my friend. worse than stout when the west and east usually have at least 3 teams that will compete for the conference championship

Is it just me, or does Tubs have an Afred E. Newman "What, me worry" look on his face?

I can't imagine they will get rid of Tuberville. I believe he is a fantastic coach who tried to employ a new offensive system which resulted in an extraordinarily anemic offense. There is always a transition in a new offense.

Michigan has not completed their transition, but we wouldn't expect them to.

Florida's offense was not mastered until this year, and Meyer employed a hybrid offense, not initiating his complete spread offense, until he had the right quarterback to execute it. Maybe Michigan should have started the year with the same hybrid goal.

If Tuberville comes back next year, I suspect they will be in the top 20 again. If the offense can score 21 points a game, they win more than half of their games.

November 14, 2008  12:26 PM ET

I ask my barn friends all the time, "For someone who has had the most success ever at the barn, why would you want to get rid of Tuberville?" Seems like the same kind of attitude that saw Jeff Bowers leave Southern Miss.

November 14, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Tuberville is the right coach for Auburn. The spread is not the right offense for Auburn.

November 14, 2008  01:47 PM ET

crappy ms teams didn't a crappy ms team beat florida lol

Remember this truth.....Terry Bowden had ONE bad season at Auburn and Bobby Lowder
canned him. The Iron Bowl will not be the Iron Bowl this year. It is a "Day of Reckoning"
in Tuscaloosa. I don't know if Auburn can defeat Georgia or not. Frankly....I don't care.
Bama will beat Mississippi State and will shred Auburn. And you may talk down the Tide
in the SEC Championship Game if you wish. But remember back in 1992 when Bama played
Miami. Same thing then as now. No one gave Alabama a chance then either.
Roll Tide!
