Yankees want Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe

The Yankees will make an offer to exceed Johan Santana's $137.5 million contract to top target CC Sabathia and closely follow that bold first strike with proposals within the next day or two to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, SI.com has learned. The Yankees' aggressive three-pronged free agent pitching approach puts them in position to dominate the free-agent market. The three offers together are expected to total in the $250 million range.

aka a three pronged attack to deepen my disdain for the yankees...

Not sure what the fascination with Lowe is- he's OLD
- great an innings eater....but once players get past MID 30's
can they really sustain their health ??

And Burnett- when healthy is GREAT-
WHEN HEALTHY-
not sure you want to give him major years- based on his track record

Lowe said he doesn't want the Yankees. I can't imagine him saying that to just jack up the price, can you? :)

They forgot to mention Manny. Lowe isn't worth what he'll fetch, Burnett is fragile and will be similarly overpaid. Just overpay Manny and CC, let some other teams overpay the others.

Nice wish list. The Pirates will probably go after David Wells, Reggie Sanders and Ryan Klesko. Nothing like over the hill talent to ignite the fan base.

LGP, it could be worse for you. You could be a Padres fan like me. SD wouldn't even bring back former Padres likes Klesko and Wells right now. At this point there ought to be a Pirates/Padres fan club/support group to deal with depression and sadness.

Yet, Yankees fans still do not understand why some of us detest everything this organization represents in America. If the Bronx Blunders can't win it all in 2009 with Sabathia, Burnett, and Lowe, and possibly Peavy via trade at this point, what would they do in Hot Stove 2009? Call Dr. Frankenstein?

I think two of those guys are actually dead. But hand it to the Pirates, they do know how to sniff out a bargain.

Hey, they're only dead if you can prove it! Hee hee.

Like a real corpse would be worse than some of the walking dead they've put out there in recent seasons.

No offense dude, but I'd hardly call being a Padres fan worse. They've won 2 Division Championships in the last 4 years. Last season was bad, but every year is bad for the Pirates who haven't had a winning season since 1992.

Their own Division that is.

The Yankees may never learn. Spending the most in free agency does not translate to a championship. Although, what it does do is keep butts in the seats in a season where ticket prices are going to be up tremendously.

Conceivably the Yanks could really screw themselves signing these guys to all that money/years. Sabathia is not in shape (maybe doesn't need to be), Burnett is like glass, and Lowe is on the back 9 and belongs in the NL.

As a sox fan I hope they sign them all to huge multi-year deals.

Thanks for trying to lift my spirits a tad. Much appreciated.

Why do the Yankees even bother to have a farm system? It's taking valuable free agent resources away!

Yes, you're right, we still dont understand why you detest the Yanks. And the 'everything this orgamization represents in America" part is a bit dramatic, isnt it. I meanm, this is after all a sport, baseball, and not some far reaching government conspiracy or corporate raiding. What does it represent? Capitalism? If you detest that, Id like you to point out a better system in the hoistoiry of world governments. Lemme guess, youre an Obama "redistribution of wealth", revenue sharing kind of guy. You want the Yanks to give their money away to teams like the Marlins and Tampa, where the "fans" wont even go watch a playoff caliber and ALCS-winning team play. Or maybe George should give his money to the Twins, owned by Carl Pohlad, one of the richest men in thew world, a man who could write a check to purchase the entire Steinbrenner family right now, but is too cheap to put the money baclk into his baseball team. Is that what the Yanks should do?

I mean, if owners want a salary cap, they should collectively bargain for one. If the fans want one, they should stop going to games, stop watching on TV, stop buyiong the baseball package, and stop buying MLB merchandise until owners and advertisers have to listen and institute a cap. Until that time, the Yanks are simply operating within the rules of baseball by utilizing their resources to get FA's to play in NY- it's no different that the Padres or Braves using the fact that their cities are nice places to live to get players to come there, or a Florida team using the fact that there is no income tax in the state. Each team is able to use a distinct advantage to get players- for the Yanks, it hap;pens to be that they are in the biggest market and therefore have the biggest revenue. And lets not also forgot that when Geortge bought this team from CBS for what, $10 million in 1972, the franchise was in terrible financial shape, the team was awful...and he built it to what it is today, an organization that can spend $200 mill on player salary and still turn a profit.

So no, I dont understand your problem with the Yankess or "everything they represent in America".
