Theismann weighs in on Weis

No less an interested observer than ex-Irish quarterback Joe Theismann labeled the Navy game "the biggest football game in Charlie Weis' football career." Theismann made the remarks on the "Waddle & Silvy" show on WMVP-AM 1000 earlier this week. "If they lose to Navy again, the natives will get extremely restless," Theismann said. "It's not supposed to happen. I don't care where your program is. I can understand last year because Navy presents a different issue that most teams do when they present their option offense. You are Notre Dame. You are supposed to be better... "To me you can not lose this football game. This becomes the biggest football game in Charlie Weis' football career. This is one where you are either going to have the stadium excited or the people are going to go out of there shaking their heads, and trust me, you don't want them going out of there shaking their heads."

So is and when ND does lose today, how will the ND fans in denial get past this one? By the way anyone hear the guy on FOX Sports Radio this morning get fleeced by Chris Moore on the Notre Dame topic? Not a big fan of FOX Sports Radio, but that was great today!

No question Charlie Weis has some 'splaining to do. I was extremely disgusted, as a ND fan, that they lost to Pitt and BC. He is paid a lot of money and they have playmakers. Jimmy had a horrific game against BC but you still gave them 14 of their 17 pts. I am concerned it is about coaching. I could handle fumbles, pics, etc., those things unfortunately happen but being outcoached is unacceptable. I have met and like Charlie Weis but that wont cut it. We know as ND fans that all of this alleged interest in what is happening with the Irish is the anti-ND sentiment and we are take that with a grain of salt...which is all it is worth. ND should beat Navy and for Charlie's sake I hope they do. Go Irish!

ECK You seem to spend far more time bashing Weis and ND than talking up your beloved Trojans. Is this some type of obsession...?

Notre Dame needs to stop living in the past and realize that in this day and age, they're not likely to field a top 10 team any time soon. I don't hate Notre Dame, but they're not the program they were decades ago and college football has become so balanced that it's a different game today.

Notre Dame really should join the Big 10. They have a much better chance at getting to bowl games with the guaranteed bowl offers. I honestly cannot believe that NBC continues to negotiate and pay huge sums of money to watch a team barely getting to .500. If you guys fire Weiss maybe not this year, but next year after you go .500 or so again, then what? You'll end up having to wait another 3-4 years for that coach to get his recruits in and build the program under his idea of what works. Either way Notre Dame's in a pretty dismal shape and it seems that your screwed either way. I thought Weiss would be a good move but clearly his methods have not done much. All these players are Weiss recruits and they're barely breaking even, and this year especially they haven't beaten a single winning program. That's really bad.

Let me preface the remainder of my comment by stating that I am a ND fan. Having said that, I'll continue. I listed carefully to a brilliant point that Kirk Herbstreit made on College Gameday. Why is anyone shocked at ND's losses or potential losses? Will they lose to Navy? Possibly so. Why be shocked? And why hate Charlie Weis? Kirk Herbstreit's main point was this: Folks, this is who Notre Dame is now. They've been this way for 17 years. What we see with Charlie is what we saw with Ty W, and Bob D. It's not a coaching problem...it's a coach selection problem. And that problem finds commonality with the Athletic Director and ND's leadership; there is where the blame belongs. ND's president stated that the university seeks to the "National Parish." Perhaps he meant "National Perish."

Pardon me: "National Parish" of college football.

And if he spent time talking up his beloved Trojans, you'd probably bash him on that too.

Is it OK to stop pretending that Charlie Weis is a good coach, yet? No other major D1 program would wait this long for a "marquee" coach to turn around their misfortunes. Many Domer Homers will make any and every excuse imaginable to justify his utter failure as a head coach.

Time to wake up and call it like it is. Notre Dame made a horrible choice in tabbing Weis to head the team. That mistake was compounded tenfold by giving him a ridiculous contract extension. Charlie Weis is simply incapable of remaking Notre Dame into the national power they were 15 or 20 years ago. That's not hate, it's rational observation.

November 15, 2008  02:47 PM ET

HAHAHA - this is what the Notre Dame football program has been reduced to - a "must win" game against....NAVY.

Weis is a terrible coach - this is his 4th year, most of the players are HIS recruits, so what is the excuse now? Maybe the fat **** will blame the doctors who saved his life for this too. What kind of lazy slob has a gastric bypass and gets even fatter? The only way Charlie would find a decent player is if he was working at a Dunkin Donut shop.

It is time for Charlie to take his ineffective offensive scheme back to the NFL. Up 27 - 7 and you squeek it out 27-21 against Navy! Why does he put in the second team offense with over 9:00 minutes left in the game? Now this teams comes away shaking their heads with relief rather than coming away with confidence! Jimmy Clausen needs to study film instead of the designs on a Budwiser can after class or he is going to continue to be labeled as his Tennessee brothers as "Lot's of Potential" instead of a "Winner!"

Not true at all. There are a number of sensical, Notre Dame fans here on this site with proper perspective who I share ideas with. As a USC fan, of course I do not like Notre Dame - especially now with the big bafoon from my home state. But I have had plenty of friendly discussions here about Notre Dame that have been more observation than actual bashing. My obsession is all college football. As for my Trojans, I am currently haunted by the thought that despite having the best defense in history of college football (so the talking heads say this morning), I may be watching them in the Sun Bowl or even worse while Oregon State plays Penn State in the Rose Bowl. For the rest of the 2008 I root for USC and whoever is playing Oregon State. Oh yeah, can't forget who ever is playing ND too.
This is all in good fun of course. I don't "hate" anyone. OK maybe except for Weis.

November 15, 2008  04:07 PM ET

ND deserves to be bashed. We Domers have a team that is so inept offensivly and will get bashed in USC in 2 weeks something awful!

November 15, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Weis is a bad coach but that doesn't make Joe Theismann any less of an a** hole.
