Red Sox in mix for Teixeira

The Red Sox should be in the mix for Mark Teixeira, in whom they have long had interest. The early chatter is a contract in the vicinity of 7-10 years at more than $20 million annually might whittle the field, though the Angels, Red Sox, and Yankees won't likely feel their pockets burn no matter what they have to pay. The Sox love Teixeira's glove, his bat from both sides, and his presence. It would be a surprise if they don't make a substantial offer, though it might not come on Day 1.

I don't like this move-
Obviously Tex is a great player-

But Youk is a PROVEN clutch guy-
and his numbers are not too shabby.

Agreed. Much as Youk makes me want to puke, if it comes to him or Tex, they'd be crazy to go with Tex. But this definately wouldn't be the first time they let a hometown favorite go. Theo is one cold mutha.

Youk KILLS us-

After watching the 'clutch' 90's yanks and the bloated
'non-clutch' recent yanks - you cannot undervalue
proven clutch guys....PERIOD

Youkilis is originally a 3rd baseman. I wouldn't assume that it's Teixeira or Youkilis, but rather Teixeira or Lowell -- and Lowell, when he wasn't hurt last year, had pretty average offensive numbers, and has half the testicles that Tex has.

Good morning, Mr. Redfoot. Yeah, I didn't see anything in this article about Youk, either, but our groovy friend brought up the scenario. Theo IS heartless, as he should be, but I don't see Tex's signing there necessarily spelling Youk's departure.

Oh, and I disagree about the testicles thing. I think you just said that becuase you like to see the word "testicles" in print. His numbers weren't that great, but he is a clutch hitter.

Good morning to you, too, Mr. Yer Base.

I've got to make breakfast -- I'll be in and out.

this makes all the sense to get tex because he can play multiple postions.. including the off field its not about getting rid off yuk its about adding power to a medicore offense good move if they make it like the going says you can never have enough great players

November 15, 2008  11:09 AM ET

It'd be a great addition. Lowell isn't getting younger and it's hard to come back from hip surgery. Youkilis would move to third and Tex would take first. Sox need another big bat to keep pressure off Bay and protect Ortiz.

November 15, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Theo is cold, but he's not dumb...Youk isnt going anywhere for quite a while. Youk leaving the Red Sox woud be a cause for celebration just as Manny was (in Yankees fans minds). If Youk were a Yankee...I would be happy.

November 15, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Texas needs a 3rd baseman and the Sox need a catcher. As an impartial, I think it makes too much sense to sign Tex and trade Youk for one of the Rangers young catchers.

Don't even bother to mention Lowell. NOBODY is going to trade for that contract with his age and injuries.

November 15, 2008  11:16 AM ET

This is the smartest move by the red sox. Gold Glove 1b hits and you guys are forgetting that Youk plays third and the sox arent sure what they re getting back in Lowell, the guy is getting old. Texieria has more power then lowell, and so doesnt youk so they ll be adding a lot more power to their lineup. Hopefully the sox get him and lowe, they could have a shot at the World Series.
