Testing ban could save up to $40 million

In a cost-cutting initiative reflective of the nation's economic climate, NASCAR officials yesterday announced a ban on testing that is expected to provide a savings of a reported $30 million-$40 million. Effective Jan. 1, NASCAR will no longer permit testing by its teams at sanctioned tracks that stage Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Camping World Truck Series races, as well as Camping World East and West events. While NASCAR has been perceived as a prosperous sport that enjoyed unbridled growth over the last two decades, it was not immune to the economic concerns of its teams, sponsors, and manufacturers. According to car owner Rick Hendrick, some teams spent "as much as $700,000, $800,000 to $1 million a team, depending on how much you test."

If the COT was supposed to cut costs to level the playing field, and knowing how many 1- or 2-car operations (and in some cases more...i.e. Ganassi/DEI) didn't have sponsors lined up for '08 (magnifying the have's vs. have not's), this come about a year late.

The math in the story seems a little fuzzy, too...seems either Hendrick is low-balling what a team (meaning a single car) would spend in a year, or the $30-$40 million is overstating the savings. Roughly put, 40 teams would have to spend an average of $750,000-$1 million to get to that kind of savings.

Maybe it's true - just seems like there'd be more parity if the distribution was really that flat.

Davey, well said, totally agree.

if there were just 40 teams out there testing you might be right.... but last time I looked there are 56 registered teams in nascar who can field a car... that changes the savinga a bit...
just thought you might like to know...

Yea but -- there are a load of owners of "non-sanctioned" tracks that are lickin' their chops ... there is where the testing will take place now.

dr-I get that - I was just showing one shortcut to get to the number they were talking about for the sake of an example.

My point is that I doubt teams ranked 21-40, much less 41-56, are spending in the same $700M-$1MM ballpark that's spent by "some teams" in the Hendrick quote...that's what I mean by a "flat distribution".

Anyway, in the full NASCAR.com article, it quotes Jr. as saying "It's going to save each individual team, the 5 car, the 24 car, about $1.5 million a year. So it's a great move." So there we have it--when Hendrick says "some teams" he's not talking about "his teams. "

The big boys are probably spending 3-10x more what the mid-to-lower tier teams can afford. (Same article also estimates it costs ~$100,000 per day to test - OUCH!!!).

p.s. What they also don't make clear either is whether ban and savings figure covers testing for Nationwide and Truck team...much easier to get to the number they're talking about it that's the case.

Davey28fan i understand, you know it is kinda funny wed night on my way home from work at 4 am( really it was thursday morning) I was passed by two Roush trucks pulling trailers (not the big haulers but dually's with 30ft goosenecktrailers) running bout 100mph, one got pulled over soon as he got in ga and they had them on the side of the road searching every sq inch of that trailer, I know the fine was huge running that fast, may of even went to jail( idoubt it but could have) but they did it anyway, these teams spend ungodly amounts on stuff testing and the like, and I guess if I had that kind of budget to race on Iwould too but that is what has killed out sport of racing, money... heck even dirt cars are doing it....greed nasty filthy greed.... but the world goes round...
