Knicks, Marbury closer to resolution

Stephon Marbury -- exiled from the Knicks' roster but beholden to his contract -- is softening his stance against a buyout and taking steps toward a resolution. Marbury met with Donnie Walsh, the team president, for about 45 minutes on Thursday to discuss his situation. The talks were described as "very preliminary" by a person with knowledge of the meeting, who added that it was "too early to characterize" the talks as a negotiation. The Knicks provided the outline of a potential buyout of the $21.9 million contract -- with a pay cut in the $3 million to $5 million range -- several weeks ago, according to a person who was briefed on the matter. Marbury refused, telling associates that he would not accept $19 million in exchange for free agency. There have been periodic talks between Marbury and Walsh throughout the process, but Thursday's meeting was the first extensive face-to-face discussion.

3 - 5 mil less? That's a generous offer from the Knicks. He can easily recoup that from which ever team he takes his troubles to. This shows Marbury doesn't care about playing basketball. He's all about making money.

Good luck finding another team.

I think he does 'care'' about basketball- in his own warped way
and of course he cares about $$$- but I think the bottom line is

that he never really grew up. He still sees himself as the 20 year
old PHENOM who was going to be the 'greatest' point guard
of all time....
he never really learned how to play TEAM ball
he never really had anyone 'ground' him
- and through it all he was kept thowing $$$$-

- in 'real life' - he's not a bad guy- charitable-
basically never got into real trouble
- he's just a spoiled brat- who still doesn't realize the world doesn't revolve around him....its a shame because he really was a fantastic talent

The Knicks are on a nice little run, and this is a story. Note to the editor that picks the stories! When the Knicks are losing, you look for a reason why in a story like this.

Some of you said fat Zach, looks good to me. 20 and 10
Some of you said things about Nate, how is he playing.
What about chandler.

Not ready to start the band, but after last year i will take it.

Are you kidding me, listen you bald headed Starbury take the paycut and play for a another team bra!

This thing will work itself out. The Knicks need to deal with this distraction, ASAP. The problem is that Donnie wants to win this one. He can't. Let Dolan cut the check for the full amount, because he will, and move on.

i totally agree.. pay him and move on... then get a suitor for curry and bring back Pat Jr. that is the only way i see this playing out for the good of their future

I'm not a big fan of Stephon's; he is talented, often seems selfish and has usually looked like a 'me first' player. But Knicks' ownership/management has been a disgrace for years. Stephon got his contract fair and square. He earned it (if anyone can be said to earn that kind of money playing ball). Let the Garden eat another contract. At least Stephon has played for it. We don't know what has really gone on between SM and Isiah, SM and D'Antoni, but we do know that SM has made some efforts at being real - community outreach, reasonably priced sneakers and being honest during last year's MSG harrassment trial. Stephon has had a long career and has gone far based on talent and effort. Personalities don't always mesh. Stephon, keep the money. You "earned" it. All of it.

Pay him and move on so we can get a real story on FN.

It's funny- cause I get that he wants to 'win' this one
But my question is why ?

- obviously steph is a holdover from another regime-
it wasn't Donnie's 'mistake' - so why is he taking it so personally?

Exactly. What's another $3 million? That's chump change for Dolan. I say pay the man, so both parties can move on.

This guy is a turd.

Yeah, I am unsure why he is acting this way. We all know James Dolan can write checks. It's what he is good at so I don't get why Donnie is acting like Dolan doesn't have the means to write a 21 million dollar check just to get rid of him?

Shoot the man is paying Zeke 21 mill to do nothing so what's another 21 mill for Steph?

November 15, 2008  09:01 PM ET

Who cares who the winner is , pay the man & let him go, it dosn't matter if he signs with whoever now or later. HE will come back to tourch the Knicks in some way or form, but he will never be a winner. He just dosn't know how, unless he is a role player on a great team

November 15, 2008  09:48 PM ET

This is ridiculously becoming very juvenile.

November 16, 2008  01:52 AM ET

Maybe Dolan is tired of the buyouts. With the distraction in tow the Knicks are 6-3, so why settle? Dolan's position doesn't get any weaker by waiting.

November 16, 2008  02:32 AM ET

if im dolan, i wont buyout stephon. let him stay with the knicks and put him on inactive list until he'd knock on dolan's door and settle for 10 mil. (it wont happen unless steph is bent on proving other people wrong.)

Agreed.

They should make him rot till the end of the season. Marbury's such a wuss... Jamaal Tinsley and Antoine Walker are in the same boat but they are not causing any distractions.

They have not asked to train at some high school or talk of buyouts. Steph needs to ****.

November 17, 2008  11:34 AM ET

A**ho**s should be fired like in any other company.

November 17, 2008  12:04 PM ET

I don't care what anybody says, they gave Allen Houston all that money for NOTHING, so they should have no problem paying Marbury what's in his contract.

November 17, 2008  04:10 PM ET

are u kidding me you're saying no to 19 million dollars man u could go to someone like cuban and he'll pay u more than 10 million for this season that would be 29 million plus compared to not playing and showing how good u r and be on the bench. screw that its a very generous offer take the deal
