General Motors has not been told whether the new Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing team will field Chevrolets next season, according to Pat Suhy, GM's NASCAR manager. Dale Earnhardt Inc., a four-car Chevrolet team, and Chip Ganassi Racing, a two-car Dodge team, announced Wednesday their plans to merge for the 2009 season. They did not announce a manufacturer, but Dodge teams seem resigned to the probability that the new four-car organization will race Chevrolets next season.

this sounds fishy to me. maybe GM does not want to sponsor dying team DEI. This merger seems like life support that'l only delay DEI's full demise for a year or so.
DEI without GM
wonder what RC thinks of this. He would stand to lose money on this, since DEI and RCR share an engine developement program that just had big $$$$ put into it the last 2 years. Sr and his best bud RC must be totaly disgusted.

oh everyone talking bout dale sr give it a break the man is dead for gods sake... business is business and dei has kept right on going even though there were tons of people on here last year saying they would fold... if you want to reference someone how bout big bill france he is the one who is spinning like a top in his grave for what his wonderboy has done to his sport,
progression it is the name of the game...

Doc -- agree for the most part ... but it would be a bunch of BS to see DEI on a TURD.

November 15, 2008  10:57 AM ET

I am never going to stop referring to SR. He is the reason I started watching racing in the first place and I miss him every raceday. What a dishonor it would be to never refer to his dreams and goals. I do not own my own company so I will never be in a position to worry about my company's goals, but if I did, I would not want them destroyed by others.
Yes, business is business, and survival tactics are required, but I cannot help but think a lot of DEI's problems could have been avoided, and this brings out the references to Sr.

I don't want to rain on anyones parade but the reason Toyota is making the inroads they are making in Nascar and with the American car buyer is they are one step ahead of the Big Three.
An example is when Bob Nardelli, CEO of Chrysler, in reference to the pending bailout or loan as some call it, said, we need this to retool for innovation. My question is, why would we subsidize Detroit to be innovative. They are in the innovation business and it looks like they were not very innovative up to this point. Honda has opened a 154 million dollar engine plant in Canada to produce 200,000 fuel efficient 4 cylinder engines annually for Civic production for North American demand. Toyota has the Prius, enough said there. If the tax dollars are to be used by Detroit some changes will have to be made and hopefully the union will go along with the changes. They don't have much of a choice as the end result of the Big Three folding is hard to imagine, I read that the residual effect could have an effect on 3 million workers in the United States.

JK, I agree with you. Even Toyota and Honda are struggling a bit in this economy [heard on the news yesterday], but not in any real danger, because they got smart early on.
Any bailout should be a loan only and should have strict conditions that are monitored to be met. One of those conditions must be keeping the unions and production volumes under control.
About 4 years ago, just having a beer and chatting with friends, we wondered about the big 3 maintaining their gas pig productions and the excessive volumes. We are just average guys but even then we could see it leading to severe trouble. Why couldn't the smarter company guys see this coming. And why did they not react. JK, you are so right about no innovation.

For those keeping EarnTaz DNA (Derogatory NASCAR Acronymn) score at home:

According to Google--which already includes today's post, so how cool is that, huh?!?!--it's (drumroll please).....
TURD - 23, TRASHCAR - 15.

Oh, and while I'm here...

Headline: Earnhardt-Ganassi may not drive GMs

Last line of paragraph: "They did not announce a manufacturer, but Dodge teams seem resigned to the probability that the new four-car organization will race Chevrolets next season."

So this story has a point because.........(?) Oh, yeah, I forgot - I must be on T&R!!! They probably haven't yet met their quota of how many times they must show the "Montoya looking pensive" photo.

What does it really matter? It's all speculation until it's announced anyways. Besides, the Queen T and Ganassi won't be around soon anyways. Face it, the Queen only knows how to suck the life out of a business and when was and Indy Car team owner ever successful in NASCAR. It's all just a patch and extra bilge pump. As the economy goes so do the unsuccessful teams, sponsors want bang for their buck. Neither DEI or Ganassi can provide that on a regular basis week in and week out. And, I don't think DEI will part ways with Chevy, as there is a long history there.

DEI has not kept going, it is struggling in many ways and not all are public at this point. The fact that DEI has tried to merge with several teams should tell you that they are close to folding, a merger is a last resort. DEI was attractive when Jr and his sister Kelly were still with DEI, since the two left there has been sparse interest, Teresa doesn't know squat about racing, she knows marketing and that doesn't keep the team in the Top 10.

November 15, 2008  06:54 PM ET

Mr Miyagi exactly!

November 15, 2008  11:59 PM ET

I hope they go with Dodge or if their smart Toyota or Ford. And I was hoping to see DEI go away. Can't stand Tereasa or how ever her names spelled (not that I care)
The thing that sucks is all the employees being let go because of this dumb merger

November 17, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Davey28FAn -- LMAO ... didn't realize anyone was keepin' score ... are you sure you don't work for TRASHCAR -- Ooops ... I mean NASCAR. HeHeHe

November 17, 2008  11:54 AM ET

I swear it looks like Montoya is scanning the grandstands for some INS agents

November 18, 2008  04:35 PM ET

WEll if the Big Three fail, this team may be looking to Honda or Totoya for their next rides.

November 20, 2008  08:55 PM ET

oh gotta love all the dale worshippers....
