Astros dumping big contracts

All you hear about the Astros is that they're trying to "dump money." They want to move Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde and if they could get Carlos Lee, coming back from a finger injury, to waive his no-trade clause, they'd probably move him. They won't be completely shut out - they'll try to sign Randy Wolf and another end-of-the-rotation starter - but don't expect a blockbuster signing.

I wonder if the Braves would trade for Carlos Lee. There supposed to be looking for a LF through the trade market, and Lee would definitely be the best available. Miggy would also be good if we trade escobar

what the hell is houston doing?

I was thinking the exact same when I read the article. IMO Atlanta could use a slugging left fielder and let the young guys fill out the pitching rotation.

November 16, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I dont think anyone would want miggy but lee and Valdere are possibilties. If they want propects put Oslwalt on the block and get a huge return value

November 16, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Carlos Lee = Pat Burrell's replacement

November 16, 2008  05:02 PM ET

why would the boston globe know anything about the astros situation?

drayton mcllane would never sell of his team and rebuild (look back to 2000), even if it was for the best.

I think Houston is actually getting a jump on what a lot of teams are going to be doing the next couple of years. Believe it or not this whole economic mess is eventually going to have a big effect on MLB.

You have a good point there! I could see that happening, except maybe Steinbrenner, LOL !!!

Getting Carlos Lee in Philly would be nice. It would also be possible since they would be dealing with Ed Wade, who they already fleeced in the Lidge deal last year. Something like Lee for Geoff Jenkins and Adam Eaton would be good.

Nah we would need to send him some middle relievers. He loved him some middle relievers while he was in philly

You may have a point. How are companies going to justify the huge expense of keeping luxury suites and boxes at the stadium when they are losing money? How many holders of those rooms have already disappeared from existence, especially on Wall Street?

We'll what the FA market does this year. I'll be surprised if it doesn't start dropping by next off season.

Not to bust anyones bubble but in hard economic times sports/entertainment becomes even mor important, yes, some corporate sponsorship may dry up, but it is not going to be so bad as to effect payroll...that would e cheap ownership getting cheaper.

November 16, 2008  11:37 PM ET

If things get as bad as they seem to be heading, prices and salaries will come down.

We've not had bad economic times since going to a game became a luxury item or since corporate luxury boxes became such a big part of the owners income. We'll see what happens.

I think Lee would give up his NTC to go to the World Champion Phillies to replace Burrell, but he isn't going to go to Sabean's Giants. In Houston, they have Tejada, Berkman, and some speed in the line-up. On the Giants, Lee would be the only guy with more than 13 HR in their line-up of has-beens and the untested. Why would he willingly go into baseball purgatory?

Houston should trade Berkman to the Angels for 2 young stud starters and at least one more prospect (corner OF or 3b). They could then use their $$ to fortify their bench and pen (instead of paying the Big Unit $15M for a .500 record) and bring on a low-risk/high reward career salvage project like Richie Sexson or a solid hitting former middle IF like Nomar Garciparra/Jeff Kent to man 1b for 2009. They'd cut salary, get younger in the rotation, and field a team better than 2008.

Are you "****" kidding? Do you really think the Astros would take those two scrubs/has-beens for one of the best run producers in the game, despite his huge contract? The Phillies would need to give up some young pitching if the Astros were going to trade Carlos Lee.

November 17, 2008  02:50 PM ET

Yeah, having a hard time trying to figure out why the 'Stros would be willing to give up everybody now when they started playing very well at the end of last season. Why not just wait til the deadline, see if you're in contention, then trade your studs to teams desperate for a star? (Think Brewers/Indians). If they are truly trying to dump everybody the Braves should look into both Lee and Oswalt.

Angels will not give up prospects for Berkman.......
