K-Rod's stock falling
There is growing belief in the industry, in fact, that Francisco Rodriguez will have to retreat from his five-year, $75 million demands and accept four years. Rodriguez's stuff is not as electric as in the past, possibly because his high-effort delivery has robbed some life from his arm, though he is just 26. Rodriguez registered 1-2-3 frames in a career-low 29.2 percent of his innings (all figures courtesy of Elias). That ranked 151st out of 253 pitchers who worked at least 60 innings in 2008.

A very strong case can be made that 2008 was the worst of his career. He's still, obviously, very good, but he was probably the sixth best closer last year and there's no justification to give him Mariano Rivera money.

K-Rod's Stock Falling? Only because it was set artificially high in the first place.
$75M over five? As the Inuits like to say: Chu-ma-nut.

Excellent point-
As someone said earlier- he may have been the 6th best closer
maybe- maybe not....but bottom line is who is AVAILABLE NOW
that is BETTER.
he'll get a 4 year deal-
and even with 'diminishing' stuff.....he has EARNED it

Relievers are even more fragile than starters. I could bore you with numbers and statistics but go check out baseball.reference.com and check some relievers big years and then see how they did in the long term shortly aftet that year, for yourselves.

You mean the way sweaty Freddie Garcia "earned" that ridiculous contract with the Phillies? Yes, he's probably the best of what's out there but I have a strange feeling we're going to see him fall off the radar very soon. I'm not a big fan of his delivery.
Mornin' Slink, jc, Walrus and ball-seeking furball..................oh and you too Mr. TheCat.

It's all timing. 1)This offseason has quite a few decent closers available. 2) Big money teams NYY and BOS are not in need of a closer 3) Other big money teams Mets and Angels feel comfortable going in other directions.
If he had become a free agent during an offseason with few closers available and more big money teams needing a closer, he would have gotten that $75M

yup-
it's like that in every sport-
ESPECIALLY teams that players don't always want to go to-

now that kerry wood is a free agent. i dont see why you would want to overpay for an overrated closer(k rod) when you can get Wood and or Fuentes

Well, now that you bring it up, while you're right Fuentes is six years older, I wouldn't say that Rodriguez was that much better, if at all. Rodriguez had a better ERA, but Fuentes had:
Better K/9
A WAY better BB/9
Way better K/BB
Better HR/9
Better BAA
Better WHIP
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. K-Rod was the seventh best closer in 2008.

K-Rod had a CAREER YEAR in 2008 as far as SAVES.....nothing else about his stats stood out. It's all downhill for him from here........you see it all the time. Only a dope GM will pay him for last year's totals for each of the next 5 years

With all due respect but that's kind of an idiotic assesment? I can tell you as a Cardinal fan, I don't care what he has "earned"?? ...if its true his stuff is diminshing...sorry, but no thanks. Not for that kind of coin.
I thought the whole idea of signing a guy to big dollars was to get him either on the way up, or while his stuff is still good? Not diminishing? If that's the case with KRod, then I'll take my chances on Kerry Wood who = Diminishing for A LOT less $$$.
