Thierry Henry is emerging as a strong candidate to be the marquee player for a potential Miami based Barcelona MLS team in 2010. It is no longer a secret that FC Barcelona are bidding to have a team, based in Miami, included in the MLS from 2010 onwards, but the identity of their preferred star signing will come as a shock to everyone. Thierry Henry has never quite settled in at the Nou Camp, but his future may yet involve wearing a blaugrana shirt...in Miami.

That's like getting sent down to AA ball lol Maybe it'll light a fire under any underachieving Barca player, do well or get sent to MLS

I like it RedDevils99, it would be a good idea. I brought up a similar idea when it was rumored that Anschutz group was interested in buying Newcastle.

It would be a good idea. Henry is going to play here eventually and it's mutually beneficial to him and Barca for it to be for their club in Miami.

November 16, 2008  01:15 PM ET

as long as he plays for a club here in the states...i dont mind where

November 16, 2008  01:53 PM ET

see i thought he was a really big fan of living in NYC, and that the RBs would be his team. but i can see him going to Barcas new toy in Miami, should they get the bid,

If this is true, it reeks of a ploy by Barca to get MLS to choose Miami as one of the two new cities.

If so, let's hope MLS gets something in writing, because I wouldn't put it past Barcelona for a second to simply try and cop out once they get their team in Miami.

I don't think they need this "ploy" to get Miami as an expansion team. By just being Barcelona, I would think they are at the top of the heap. When they get it, their name and money will get whoever they want.

if that were the case, why is beckham doing loan duty right now? shouldn't beckham have been able to do cartwheels and run around american soccer players as if they were still sitting cones? beckham did not make the playoff. this ain't 1985 you know... your wasting your time putting down MLS, try watching it for a change.

wake up man, beckham did not walk all over anyone in mls. beckham did not make the mls playoff. beckham is on loan to keep fit. beckham did not come to the usa and dribble around american soccer players making them look like cones on a practice field. try watching mls once in a while a come back from your 1985 mindset of soccer in the usa. sure, i'd expect something close to that if henry plays for barcelons mls, but he'll have to earn his honors. have you ever seen central american soccer? is that really soccer? now that's the AA amatuer soccer you are thinking of... 1985 soccer in the usa... wake up manm, it's 2008, 7 new soccer stadiums built from the ground up for mls!! no other sports league has grown so fast in usa sports history... what am i saying? guys like henry WANT to play in the usa... wake up man

an MLS team in miami would be a HUGE mistake. i thought the mls has done a good job putting teams in areas where the attendance would be decent. however, in miami they would struggle to fill the seats, no matter who is on the feild. the truth is, there is too much to do in miami and the surrounding areas and attendance would suffer. case and point, the marlins, panthers, heat, and dolphins.no one goes to marlins games, the panthers give tickets away like crazy, and heat tickets can be gotten for 10 bucks. even the dolphins failed to sell out a playoff game against peyton manning few years back. i am just saying if they put a team in miami expect poor attendance.

also becks hasn't been able to dominate because the players around him are miserable. granted, the quality of players in the MLS has gotten much better over the last few years, but the galaxy are miserable plain and simple, and THAT is the main reason becks hasn't been the super star he was billed as. plus with donovan in germany now, it will only get worse.

November 17, 2008  03:05 AM ET

i think he may as big if not bigger (for the sport in the U.S., NOT for pop-culture) than beckham coming to the states. He's one of the best players in the world and he could bring big euro talent with him. If he wants to come here to play, he is more than welcome!

I think better than one Designated Player the Salary cap should be raised.
I mean Beckham, Blanco, Angel, and others probably justify their salary with Jersey sales, it doesn't necessarily win games.

Every player on the roster counts, especially with open cup and other tournaments.
$moving the cap from $2 mil to $3 mil would cost the league $18 million.
That is hardly going to bankrupt anyone and it would mean $1 million dollars to the 20 players on the roster. There is a big difference between a player making $25K and $75 K.

And I grant that $50K to a Dave Vandenbergh wouldn't have made a difference of whether he made that run, I think he'd appreciate a little extra dough to compensate for his contribution to the success of the red bulls.

November 17, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Or make the extra salary a bonus to the winning teams.
the league has $18 million. If you don't make the playoffs, you get nothing.
first round exit, $1 mil.
2nd round exit, $2 mil.
2nd place, $3 mil.
1st place, $7 mil.

November 17, 2008  09:03 AM ET

I guarantee players would hustle up until their team was eliminated.

Let me guess...the oppressing humidity? The Cubans who only like baseball?
If any of you watched the recent Columbus win over Chicago for the conference championship, in Columbus, you may have noticed many empty seats in the upper level sections (practically bare).
This game was for a conference championship! Granted, it was chilly but that shouldn't have been the case. Look at Chivas USA in Mexican friendly LA, they can't fill the place either. No matter what name they give their team or who plays for them.
Until MLS decides who gets the expansion slots, lets drop the whole fear of Miami thing. With the exception of Toronto, who has shown the league and it's fans how to support a team, no other club can claim attendance as its strongest attribute. **** Sporting Goods Park in Colorado is another good example of poor attendance for a Soccer Specific Stadium. At least RSL fans came and sold out.
Henry to Miami wouldn't be a shocker, considering his current status with Barca.
Let's get the team first, address when they'll get their own home and fill the roster. In that order.

It is about time T&R recycled this rumor. Now - give me the Luis Figo rumor and we are all set.
Del Piero, Henry, Figo...

November 17, 2008  10:23 AM ET

DS22--let's raise the cap and keep the DP.

Rusty--exactly how did Miami fail? I would like numbers, figures, on field performance, etc. thank you.

PS. Wasn't there a league meeting a month or so ago, with a discussion about raising the cap? Anybody know what came of that?

thanks gaucho, i gave them a comment telling them what a bad idea it was. Hopefully enough people do the same and they realize its destined for failure (due to Miami being a horrible sports city).
As for Henry to Miami, joke, its NY or its not going to happen
