Mets confident of landing closer

The definitive league-wide availability of Trevor Hoffman and Kerry Wood only further saturated the closer market. And only gave greater confidence to the Mets that they not only will find a closer this offseason, but find him via free agency, which is their preference because that would allow them to protect their farm system. The market has become so saturated, in fact, that an AL official regularly in touch with the Mets executives said it was his perception the Mets will wait to see if supply-and-demand take holds and the price falls, especially for the two main free-agent closers, Brian Fuentes and Francisco Rodriguez. As Hardball previously has reported, the Mets' main targets this offseason are Fuentes and Derek Lowe.

if the mets go for hoff OR wood- there will be riots outside citi field....

it would be yet ANOTHER instance where the Mets don't go
after TOP players and 'settle' for over the hill/oft injured guys
rather than gettin 'intheir prime' talent

November 16, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Wood may be worth a flyer but buyer beware. Hoffman is over rated.

November 16, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Mets gonna get cheap on their fans.

November 16, 2008  10:39 AM ET

the mets should sign Kerry wood and fuentes, without Both their bullpen would still suck

They both are Joe.

MET'S MUST SIGN ALL THREE KERRY WOOD, BRIAN FUENTES ALONG WITH DEREK LOWE TO COMPLEMENT SANTANA. THIS WOULD REALLY BE A WORLD SERIES TEAM. MET'S OWNERS THIS IS FOR THE FANS OF NY.

November 16, 2008  11:15 AM ET

^^^ even if they did all that they wouldnt be the clear cut favorite for the World Series

November 16, 2008  12:01 PM ET

trade with the blue jays for BJ Ryan! Jays need to regroup b/c they cannot matchup in the AL East anymore with what they have! Jays sign Kerry Wood adn shed salary and gain prospects

I dunno. The "top" closer on the market is K-Rod and he's probably the worst actual closer available. I'd only take him or Hoffman as a last resort.

Best case scenario I'd take K-Rod on a short term inscentive based contract to prove that his crappy stats(other than saves) were just a fluke. But setting the record has his head more inflated than his asking price.

- lol --

so you do WANT him- but only for a short time ??
- he ain't coming for 2 years
and he ain't coming on the cheap-

- Just Pony up the $$-
it's baseball- no cap....if he's hurt or he sucks- unfortunately
you have to eat the $$- but EVERY team that will be bidding
for him - namely the Mets- NEED a closer to win- and these
teams can afford to eat a contract if he flops

November 16, 2008  01:04 PM ET

No. I wouldn't want him on my team at all except as a last resort. There's much better closers available this year for much cheaper.

I'd like to see that too but I wouldn't go as far as saying a World Series Team. We actually have to get into the playoffs first.

Hey Bond, you want to talk cheap? Try being a Padres fan.

November 16, 2008  02:24 PM ET

please stop being cheap

November 16, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Im tired of this team being cheap. I mean I know they need pitching. stop getting guys like moises always injured alou.these guys need to retire already.im sick of these old guys making 10 million. is stupid and it doesn't make sense. as for there core players im tired of reyes and wright. they need to elevate there game. wright left to many guys on base. is always the same old story in september with this team. with who the same core the same players. i think they should either add to the core or break up the core alittle bit. i don't even trust wright on third with all the errors he made.then got the nerve to win a gold glove. who are you kidding. please bring in some guys that have guts because this team don't have guts.

the mets need to sign fuents most likely and either lowe or burnett for a second of third starter role behind johan. i still wouldnt mind adding a bat in the outfielder considering theyre getting no production from left field. i wouldnt say manny but how bout signing abreu for cheap and trading church/maybe moving him to left. i dont know im just not satisfied with the outfield right now. o and about the wright and reyes comment "metfanforlife" please all wright needs to do is start hitting the ball to right field again n he'll be fine. reyes is also the most talented player in baseball n hes gonna get it together someday too. look at jimmy rollins hes only been an elite player int he league for a few years now after breaking bad habbits when he was a kid. sorry for the tangent

I as a die-hard Met fan want management to go out and get Manny. That left side has to get better..I love Daniel Murphy but he is unproven..
