Red Wings likely to lose Hossa or Franzen

The Detroit Red Wings are reaping the benefits of having two of these premier power forwards: Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen. They must maximize Hossa and Franzen's one season together, however, because the league's salary cap, in all likelihood, will prevent the Red Wings from retaining one of them. The Red Wings' goal is to re-sign two of the three star players in the final year of their contract--Henrik Zetterberg, Franzen and Hossa. Zetterberg is their top priority, and it's fairly certain he will ink a long-term deal, for seven years or more. The only question is whether he will cost slightly more or less than the $7.45 million salary captain Nicklas Lidstrom earns. General manager Ken Holland said he has had preliminary discussions with Franzen's agent, but nothing substantive. Unlike Zetterberg and Hossa, it will take some time before Franzen's market value is established, since he didn't emerge as an offensive force until last March, finishing the regular season and playoffs with an amazing run of 28 goals in 32 games. Getting Franzen locked up will not be easy. The Red Wings went through a difficult negotiation process with him and his agent in the summer of 2006, when he was a third-line, checking forward with seemingly modest offensive potential. Franzen could cost the club between $4- and $5 million a year, and he surely would get more on the open market. Re-signing Hossa would require a series of events. The Red Wings would have to deem Franzen's asking price more than they want to pay. Hossa would have to give them a discount in the neighborhood of his current $7.45 million salary. And even then they would need to shed some salary to make room for Hossa, whom the club cannot begin contract talks with until after Jan. 1, since he's on a one-year deal.

What a tangled web we weave.

November 17, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Nature of the business. But wow, what a tough choice... both men are great additions to any line.

Players have taken pay cuts to play in Detroit in the past, and to keep other good players. I'm sure the Wings will do what they can to keep all three.

This one makes sense in Bettman's NHL
NO MORE SALARY CAPS!!!!

November 17, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Franzen is the odd man out here. Hes a 17 goal scorer on any other team.

Hometown discounts are certainly a possibility...look at the Pens with Crosby, Malkin and Fleury. The player has to be willing to do so though.

November 17, 2008  10:11 AM ET

And all the haters were poo-pooing the Pens over our mass exodus due to salary caps and look at our record so far this year. Didn't hurt us. In my opinion, it made us better. Look at the players we "lost"....what are their stats this year? Compare that to who we gained.

Cue the crickets......no comments necessary.

November 17, 2008  10:12 AM ET

LGP....home discounts are a mute point. One of the headliners didn't bite last season. That's why he is in the headlines this season already.

November 17, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Cooment #7 above was not including rent-a-player Hossa's stats. He is having good year. I was referring to the Pens players who were with them for more than a part of a season.

November 17, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Hossa is going byebye.

November 17, 2008  10:26 AM ET

The Redwings do not have the money to pay all three of them and keep under the cap, unless the all take some serious discounts.

No. If you watch him during the games hes having a riot out there. He'll stay and take 7 a year. Hes already proven he wont necessarily take the biggest offer. I see Franzen moving on.

IDK bro. I know he's surrounded by greatness but they all are. He's got 8 goals already (most right now is 10 I believe) and should break 30 this year.

Hossa's good but the Mule is no joke.

November 17, 2008  10:31 AM ET

I suppose time will tell. I think Hossa wants his Cup then his payday.

November 17, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Nice addendum T-Rocks, now I don't have to mention Hossa's stats...except that I just did.

The exec choices may be different, as I am a homer and Franzen is my favorite player (wearing his 93 in my league). Many things make this interesting and hard to guess what they'll do. My feeling has been that Hossa is a one-and-done player, but he is putting up points for this club. I have a feeling Hossa will be too expensive and Franzen will be the cheaper choice. Purely on talent, you'd be looking at Hossa, and his play fits in with the "European, puck possession" style the Red Wings like.

But, in my mind, I'd look to keep Franzen. He's just coming into his own and that gives two net guys, along with Holmstrom. But the main thing is playoff play. For several years the Red Wings rolled through the regular season with highly skill, quick puck movement teams; however, once they got to the playoffs they were bounced early because their physical play did not match up. They tried to up the ante by adding Bertuzzi, but he was a dud. Franzen gives them a big body they were looking for, but actually produces, unlike Bertuzzi.

November 17, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Franzen is a Detroit type player. Hossa wants that fat paycheck before he grows too old. He
will get a cup this year

November 17, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Why is this news. Ken Holland knew this going in BEFORE he signed Hossa to a one year deal. He anticipated signing Zetterberg to a deal slightly larger that Dats. He also knew Franzen would want more than the what 900,000 he makes now. Holland believes the cap will rise again, giving Detroit more spending room, plus, even if Hossa doesn't resign, that money will just go right to Zetterberg, and Franzen will get Zetterberg's deal (2.6 million) with whatever the cap is. They're not in a bind, they know exactly what they're doing.

Plus, if the Wings repeat, it's very possible Lidstrom retires, which gives the Wings another 7.5 million........

November 17, 2008  11:22 AM ET

From the Wings management point of view, they have tough choices to be sure. But it is the kind of tough choices that any other NHL management team would love to have. Assuming that Z will be with the Wings, negotiation can proceed apace with both Frazen and Hossa. If neither ends up a Winged Wheel, there will be salary cap room for many free agents.

November 17, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Good problems to have. I wouldn't be surprised if Holland figures something out to retain all players for a short term. I can see both Franzen and Hossa taking contracts under their market value just to stay with the Wings. Sadly, 1 will more then likely have to go. Hats off to Kenny for the great product he gets on the ice. There are some great scouts working for the wings that go find the obscure players and Holland closes the deal.

November 17, 2008  11:38 AM ET

No matter who they keep, they'll still be better than most in the NHL, if not the best. They keep finding ways of staying a step ahead of everybody else.
