Will union push Sabathia to take Yankees' offer?

The Yankees may have an unseen ally in their bid to sign CC Sabathia: pressure from the marketplace. Does the superstar pitcher have to take the highest bid this winter - the Yanks have already made a record six-year, $140 million offer and negotiating hasn't even begun - in order to set the bar high for the free-agent pitching market? Whether it is suspicion or reality, some in the baseball industry believe Sabathia has a responsibility to other players and the Players Association to accept the biggest offer, which perhaps would lead to bigger contracts for other top free-agent pitchers. If he accepts a lower deal to stay in Milwaukee or go to the West Coast, where he's from, he might fix the pitching market at a lower price. The Angels and Dodgers are perceived to be the Yankees' primary competition for Sabathia, but Mark Teixeira seems to be the Angels' priority and the Dodgers may prefer to re-sign Manny Ramirez. If they both sign their top priorities, can either afford Sabathia, too? The San Francisco Giants - Sabathia was born in nearby Vallejo - have contacted his agents, according to news reports, but can they afford a nine-figure deal for Sabathia while much of Barry Zito's $126 million contract is still on their books?

It began a hundred years ago! It's that low, gnat-like hum you hear anytime the Yankees are mentioned. If you're REAL quiet, you can just hear it...

This is a ridiculous story. Other franchises should take note of what the Yankees have done to make all that money and follow suit.

Don't knock it 'till you try it. I wish my Braves would spend money like the Yankees.

This story makes me want to puke. It has not about money. It has everything to do with money trumping loyalty to a franchise and a fan base for any player, not just Sabathia. And yes, **** the effen Yankees.

Talent and greed/stupidity by owners set the market place price for FAs. Nothing else..

I don't think Atlanta, or any other city, generates revenue for their teams like NY. Although here in Boston we "enjoy" the highest price tickets? I don't know if the Yankees will surpass the Sox this year in ticket price. If they do, at least they have a reason: a billion dollar park.

November 17, 2008  08:40 AM ET

and the common man still has to struggle to pay our bills, but you cannot blame the players, if I had an idiot throwing me $140 million how could I say no

November 17, 2008  08:42 AM ET

When all MLB teams share all revenue equally, including revenues from PSsL, suites, media rights and merchandising, I won't begrudge the Yankees' foolish spending.

Right now, it's not a level playing field.

With such a limited amount of seats and only one team in town the Sox will always be able to charge high prices. The Yanks have tickets right off the field that are about $2500 a game and they sell out so I'm not sure what the average price differential will be this year.

getting back to the real issue......

why should the union be 'pushing' anything on this guy-
wherever he wants to go - is HIS business- HIS happiness

I understand the union wants LARGE deals to elevate
other contracts....for other players - still- if the guy
simply doesn't want NY & wants LA- he's EARNED the
right to go to wherever he wants

Well said. He wouldn't be the first to take less to play where he will enjoy it more. Boras has other clients do that and end up miserable despite the extra money. If he takes 120 instead of 140 million over 6 years is it really going to impact his life style?
I'd like to see him on the Yanks but if he doesn't want to be no one should pressure him into doing it. If he ends up unhappy it'll probably make him less effective and we'll have another Ed Whitson (I forget the proper spelling) episode and no one deserves that.

$2500/game. Wow. I thought paying $300 for 2 OK tix, parking, couple of sodas and dogs was a lot.

He would be the first Boras client to take less money in order to play where he wants. Boras seems to use jedi mind tricks to make teams overpay and players play where they otherwise would not.

Well hey, so that's where our tax dollars go after 'bailing out' Wall Street. The suits just get to buy Yankees tix.. .

it is not supposed to be a level playing fiels it is America, a rat race, the stong or smarter or ingenious survive. |ocialism, a salary cap will only insure that championships are given to teams who couldnlt manage their way out of a wet paper bag. it will insure lathargic mismanagement by a greaternumber of owners.
and CC should go wherever he wants, go play for less if he wants.
