Syracuse candidates include Kiffin

Now that Syracuse Athletic Director Darryl Gross has fired good-guy Greg Robinson, the onus of finding a football coach that can restore this once-proud program to prominence falls squarely on the AD. Robinson, who had no college recruiting contacts in the Northeast, was a bad fit for the job. Gross can't afford to make the same mistake twice. Although there is rampant speculation that Gross, who came to Syracuse from USC, will consider former Trojan assistant coach Lane Kiffin, who was recently fired as the Raiders coach, here are some coaches with East Coast ties who should be considered to replace Robinson: Steve Addazio, assistant head coach Florida. Doug Marrone, offensive coordinator, New Orleans Saints. Turner Gill, head coach, Buffalo. Mike Ianello, recruiting coordinator, Notre Dame. Mike Locksley, offensive coordinator, Illinois. Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, a Syracuse grad and former player, has been mentioned.

I'm an SU fan and at this point I will take T.Bowden, lol We need somebody for the AD spot that should be open as well.

Agree totally...Kiffin would be a great choice, if he would take it..The cupboard is bare, Dantley is a joke as a QB. Means a completely new start..

Kiffin is a young guy with some experience but personally I would be happy to see Turner Gill get the job. He has done a good job with Buffalo and he already is familiar with recruiting the State of New York.

Syracuse is one of those hard sells to kids who are not from that area. Hard to go to Florida or Texas and get a kid to head up there to play ball for you.

AD comment is spot on......guess there is no accountability for making this hire to start with.

We will not spend the money. Simple as that. I do not see that happening with Kiffin. And Dantley is not a joke. Lacks playing time. he is very athletic, but does need to work on his throwing tech

Being a native Upstate New Yorker and SU fan, I would definitely consider Turner Gill for the job. After watching Buffalo on TV last week and all the good things the announcers said about Gill, he deserves a shot at bigtime football. The guy is awesome!!

Kiffin was beginning to turn things around in Oakland, at least in terms of mentality. I would see it as a perfect fit for him to be the coach at Al Davis' alma mater.

Turner Gill...

Kiffen and SU, "elevator goin down"!

I am telling TG will not leave.. He will complete his goal at UB.. He is a honorable man and a great motivator... SU should drool for him... I believe he is looking for a dream job and SU ain't it... UB is a better football program in NY currently and SU is going backward (even if it is in the Big East... Again, all the SU who did not recollect, a bad penalty cost the game last year.. The same team you have lost to Akron that we did win.. Lost Pitt by a bad call and at Heinz.. We are bowl bound and SU has not got it done) I believe if any, the Florida coordinator is a great pick.. Look at UF!

SU I think needs a name that can recruit and someone with charisma. Its going to be tough considering the current vacancies. Tennessee, Clemson, potentially AU, are/would all be much higher on the list and would have better chances to draw upon the top prospects. I think Washington may be up there too though both of these unis are in a real bad way when it comes to football.

good luck syracuse, choose wisely

Turner Gill. He has done a tremendous job at Buffalo and even though he may not get the 5 stars from TX, FL or CA he has recruited some of his current players from TX. He also has the pedigree playing for Tom Osbourne at Nebraska, that allows him to cennect with recruits. He would bring respectability back to Syracuse.

Oakland Raiders and Syracuse? Does Lane Kiffin wish to have a new profession? Lane, head as far away from 'Cuse as possible. Wait until other jobs open up to have a better choice. He's a candidate for Clemson, maybe Auburn if it opens, Tennessee...

Is Kiffin a default candidate for every coaching job in the country?

Hope you are right, but that is not what I see. He halds the ball low and throws it like a baseball. It is just plain ugly, and not very effective. How he was let to get this far with that throwing motion is the mystery. Maybe someone can fix him. It is getting late though..

Recruiting: Those New Jersey kids are going to Rutgers now. They used to run to Syracuse. That is the major difference. The Dome is a major factor for getting the sun belt kids to take a look..PP ran the program in to the ground ( good coordinator, lousy HC )and Robinson could not get it back.

November 17, 2008  06:44 PM ET

Tuner Gill???? He has never beaten a BCS school. He is NOT what Syracuse needs.

November 18, 2008  03:16 AM ET

Kiffin? Lane Kiffin?? Sorry, nothing to add here, just chuckling at the idea that he is the solution for anyone. What are the chances of him staying long enough to see things through and finding much success? Just think he worries too much about what he wants. What is best for the team, and will lead to victories, is what all coaches should be absolutely preoccupied with. Always felt he was upset he wasn't the owner, as well as coach, in Oaktown. Sense of entitlement? Maybe. Wanted to see him earn it. Sorry.

I still think Phil Fulmer would be a great choice. He is a class act, a great coach, one of the best recruiters, and he can keep his orange clothes sans the cap, change from a white T to a Blue S. He will also bring a staff that can get the job done, and I see him dominating the Big East within 3 yrs, and for a long time after that.
The QB needs a QB coach, that knows what he's doing not a punting coach, otherwise Dantley is fixable.
