Frankowski unhappy with Fire

When Polish forward Tomasz Frankowski signed with the Fire in February, his plan was to play one year and retire. But after spending much of the season on the bench, Frankowski now wants to play another year -- and not with the Fire. After Frankowski started the Fire's first five games, he made only two starts after that. The 34-year-old forward said Fire coach Denis Hamlett didn't give him a fair shot -- or an explanation. "I think we would have won the MLS Cup final with a different philosophy," Frankowski said. Frankowski is under contract next season but expects to return to the Polish league.

They could have won that game on Thursday with his help. He is still a great player. In one of the first games for the Fire, he scored 2 goals in one game. Hamlett didn't give him a fair shot.

I don't know anything about Frankowski, but I kind of doubt Hamlett didn't give him a fair shot. I don't follow MLS results that closely, but the Fire's offense seemed to be clicking the past few weeks, despite the loss to Columbus. Rolfe, McBride, Mapp, Balnco, Torrington (sp?)--where do you put this guy? Plus it says he started the first five games, so he had a shot. Obviously, something was missing.

What was missing was some defense...it is horrible to give up two 2nd half goals.

I didn't see the match, so I can't comment on that. I meant with Frankowski.

What are people thinking about MLS Cup?

November 17, 2008  10:36 AM ET

frankowski went down with a slew of random injuries.... Hamlett is the type of coach that will start and play the players who are 100% healthy.....

frankowski could have played more, but its up in the air about when.... it always seemed he went from healthy to probable to possible.... Barrett was hot at the beg. of the season... he hit a 2 month blunder and then was traded to TFC for BMB... BMB was definately an upgrade to Frankowski, however, we had to adapt to having BMB up top......

i agree with Frankowski that we would have done better this season with a different philosophy (fighting for the SS)... i dont think he would have aided in the CLB game.... but i could be off

kopper- best in the league to worst team in the playoffs?? while im against the idea of see the redbulls make the cup finals, i will state they earned the right for turning on their game at the right time....

what i disagree with is the notion that the winner of the MLS Cup is treated as the champions of the league.... they are simply the winners of an over-hyped Cup..... the Supporters' Shield winners are the true champions.... CLB won the league plain n' simple....

but both get a birth into the CL as will Hou and DCU.... hopefully the league has a better CL performance next season.... especially since DCU and RBNJ wont be playing in Superliga, they wont be spread too thin...

CL- RBNJ, CLB, DCU, HOU
Superliga- Fire, HOU, CLB, NE

I would have rather seen Real Salt Lake in the final.
Agreed - all this is is a four game race to a trophy. It's not truly reflective of who the best team was in the MLS.

But - it has been fun. I watched the first half of the Crew / Fire game but because of The Office, 30 Rock & CSI on programmed DVR - I missed the comeback. Watched the game Saturday night and it had a fair amount of entertaining football. RSL pressed & pressed but couldn't get a goal. Some great saves from the keeper & some help from the posts.

The MLS Cup on Saturday should be pretty wide open and attacking.

that's why you need at&t uverse

i think CLB will own the redbulls..... there isnt really a flaw to the Crew's lineup... and they are more then capable of punishing you multiple times within minutes if you arent carefull.. its happened to us Fire the past 2 times we played them...

personally (and this is painful to say) but im hoping the Crew win, simply due to the fact i dont want JCO to earn any hardware...especially not the MLS Cup O.o

November 17, 2008  12:02 PM ET

You have to have fire to play for the Fire. Tomasz Frankowski doesn't have it anymore. He should retire, really!

Nov 23 is a Sunday, and at 330pm on ABC for the finals-- it says on the schedule I have. Which I just can't believe! Why play the Cup Final on a Sunday in the middle of every primetime NFL game. Pretty darn stupid. Saturday would have been better. A Wednesday would have been the best--I mean, what's on TV on a weds anyhow--not much! Now people who watch Football and Futbol have to make a choice if they want to watch it live.... Telecast suicide.

Agreed, but I just have this fear of Red Bull winning. I don't care for JCO, but I also hate the entire idea that a team can just sneak into the playoff and then possibly win the official title.

Bye!

not true, i have prior engangements for saturday and would have had to dvr it and watch it later that night, so sunday is much better, just kidding..good point, no one ever accused the mls of being wise (i.e. kc wizards still exist)

November 17, 2008  01:47 PM ET

At least it's not only the MLS that isn't smart about it.
In 2010 the Champions League final will finally be on a weekend.
That whole Wednesday final is great for getting off of work but I want a day to recover.

agreed 100%.....

plus i have to work at that time.... so hopefully ill find a stream for the game O.o

November 17, 2008  02:50 PM ET

And I much more prefer they play the final in the evening, as it lends for a better atmosphere. All the other games were played in the evening during the playoffs--why stop now?

ah but theres in lies the problem....

with the playoffs you are playing at venues of the teams actually playing.... the final is between RBNJ and CLB, and they are playing it in..... LA.....

there will be some Redbulls fans and some CLB, but the mix of the audience will simply be random fans and some celebrities.... the atmosphere wont be nearly as nice as the playoffs regardless of time

November 17, 2008  03:28 PM ET

Will they fill tha stands then? I mean this "Neutral" stadium thing is ridiculous. I hate it. Just have the final be a home and away head-to-head series and let the REAL fans go nutzo. OR let the team with the most wins during the season get the homefield advantage and make the being the regular season winner MEAN something. Or just scrap all this playoffs crap all together and just say that the winner of the season is the champion like Europe.... This "Soccer Bowl" system a la the old NASL just isn't making much sense in its current format.

November 17, 2008  04:15 PM ET

If they are going to keep the playoff format...ditch the home & away in the divisional round...the first round. Then in the conference finals & finals - home & away.

Agreed D-Wreck...the real fans should have the opportunity to see a final in their own stadiums...none of this neutral site garbage.
