Orioles begin pursuit of Teixeira

The Orioles have taken the first step in their pursuit of Maryland-born first baseman Mark Teixeira. "We have had discussions with his representative," club president Andy MacPhail said yesterday. The Orioles contacted Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, on Friday, the first day clubs were allowed to officially court free agents, MacPhail said. There were no offers; Boras indicated he would get back to the Orioles when he wanted to talk specifics. It was simply an initial conversation between two deliberate, thorough men in a process that will take weeks, maybe months before resolution. The waiting game begins, but the Orioles shouldn't sit back and enjoy the music while they're on hold. They need to do something highly un-Oriole-like. They need to recruit Teixeira as if he were at Mount St. Joseph looking for that perfect school.

I really love how the author of the article actually is deluding himself into thinking the O's are real players in this thing.....

Even more insane though is that he thinks Tex can turn things around for them! Like they are only one good player away from competing!

Lordy, if crap like this article is all it takes to get a sportswriting job, I'm in the wrong line of work....

hahaha..this is funny making the fans all worked up.

Yawn.

Even if the O's were to get this guy, it would be the stupidest waste of their money in years. They're already a pretty decent hitting and fielding team, what they need is PITCHING. They should go after Lowe or Burnett. Lord knows I don't want them on the Yankees.

They like to make moves, just not the moves that would make them a solid team, good assessment Atro.

So trading Bedard for Adam Jones and Sherrill and three strong prospects was a bad move? Or trading Tejada for Luke Scott and more prospects? McPhail has come in and, so far, Angelos has pretty much been hands off (except for moving Brian Roberts). In a few years the O's will be back in the mix, but it's gonna take some time and patience.

With that being said, I agree that although Tex would be nice to have, they'd be better served going after pitching. Their starters were just plain awful this year, and their minor leaguers aren't ready to step up yet. I'd think going after Burnett and then maybe a John Garland or Derek Lowe--someone who could eat up innings--would be a smarter move.

No chance

Does anybody really think Teixera's dumb enough to sign with Baltimore? I mean, come on!

I know. That's like signing with the raiders.

The Yankees are trying to buy a championship, and probably will success, if MLB doesn't stop the madness money empire, you can throw competitive balance out the window.

November 18, 2008  05:54 PM ET

This is like the rumor of Manny signing with the Washington Nationals... AINT HAPPENING!

November 18, 2008  05:57 PM ET

The Yankees are not going after Texeira. Listen everyone... they have Posada for (3) more years... and I do not think he is going to catch all (3) years. They picked up Swisher to play 1st base in 2009 and the outfield in 2010. Then Posada will move to 1st base in 2010. THE YANKEES ARE SET ON STARTING PITCHING AND BEING MORE LIKE THE YANKEES OF THE LATE 90'S!!!!

November 18, 2008  06:04 PM ET

No Tex don't do it. Stay with the Mighty Angels. We need you bro. Screw baltimore in the face with a fork!!!! I mean come on. sunny california or dreary Maryland. the choice is obvious Tex. Stay here bro, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

November 18, 2008  06:09 PM ET

I sure hope you are right Yankee27 because I want to keep Tex.

Actually if you wanted to sign with the raiders, you'd sin with the pirates.... 17 straight losing seasons. Plus you dont realize the factor of playing for your home team and actually leading the organization back to its glory days.... i bet the Orioles become a bigger player in this signing than a lot of ppl are going to think.

November 18, 2008  09:16 PM ET

I love how just about everyone here are morons.

The Orioles have a great chance at signing Tex.

As a lifelong O's fan, the "that's like signing with the Raiders " comment really stings - but it is quite true, isn't it? What Angelos has done to this once model franchise is a disgrace. Simply look at how many competent baseball men he has run out of town because they were not "yes men", a la Syd Thrift.
