Yankees prepare big Burnett offer

Who says George Steinbrenner has stepped away from the table? The Yankees, for the second time inside a week, are on the verge of making an eye-popping offer to a free-agent pitcher and behaving like the days when The Boss threw money at free agents with both hands. The Yankees, according to several industry insiders, spent yesterday preparing an offer - perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million - for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. This would come after they offered Milwaukee lefty CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $140 million and $145 million. And the word on the MLB street is the Yankees have the glue for both. Furthermore, baseball decision-makers believe the Yankees will eventually go after Dodger free-agent righty Derek Lowe.

the free agency battle turns out to be more exciting than the WS..

Geeze, you'd thnk that these players would say " Gosh, with the Nation's economy the way it is now, I **don't need** all that money. Give it back to the people that "really" need it." While we're at it, let's 1) cut **everyone's** salary to an average of $45K a year; 2) "Re-negotiate' contracts when a player's 'current' contract runs out; 3) Get rid of 'free-agency,' or at the least when a team 'bids' for a player, that player doesn't get that money - that money goes into a 'pot' to help the Nation's economy; 4) Comments?

ok with everything but Derek Lowe. Do you really need a towel holder that bad?

Huh? There are two ways to stop these ridiculous salaries...a salary cap (which will never happen because of the power of the union) and for fans to stop doling out all this money for tickets, concessions and team apparel.

The current economy is only going to make the gap between the big and small market teams even wider. The Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, etc. are recession proof. The Twins, As, Royals, etc. are most assuredly not.

Bring back Moose or Pettete instead.

It was my understanding that this guy is a bit fragile. After last year's pitching debacle, do we really need another guy on the verge of riding the DL? I think CC is a great pickup, but if we get him, we don't really need this guy. Particularly if we get Moose back. I think Allstarz would agree that the money they're earmarking for Burnett would be much better spent on Manny.

i agree with allstarz...moose back for a one year deal with a club option for the second...aj gets hurt too frequently

I do agree the money could be better spent, like on bench upgardes, especially as Girardi actually uses he bench, Torre, not so much.
The Yankees will not make an offer to Manny for a while, if at all.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous posts I have ever read on FN. Average salary of $45,000? Players are paid by the owners, not the government. These owners make millions upon millions of dollars from these players. I believe the players should get what they are "owed" in a sense. The only way to stop these astronomical contracts is to stop going to the games. Stop buying hats and t-shirts. Stop buying the products that athletes endorse. Do you actually think this is possible. NO WAY! What if someone wanted to put a limit on your salary? That is not what this country is all about. Some/most of these athletes with gigantic salaries "give back", some do not. It is their choice, not yours...

lol its funny how the yanks have to over pay to get players to come play for them. im gonna laugh hard when C.C turns them down and AJ takes the money and gets hurt like he has been for most of his MLB Live

ENOUGH!!! We are trying to get younger... not keep all the old bad habits. Hank and Hal are listening to Cash, which George did not. Frankly I think 6 years for C.C. and 5 years for A.J. are (1) year too many... but this is what it takes to sign the top 2 free agent starting pitchers. We dont need Lowe... but would love to see the Yankees make a strong play for Peavy.

i know the yankess have the money to do this and im pretty positive that they can get it done. having said that, i have no idea where they'll be able to pay for a right fielder to replace abreu or another bat in left if they decide no to go with nady if theyre planning on getting lowe too. i mean dont get me wrong they would have by far the best rotation in baseball with Sabathia,Wang,Burnett,Lowe,n Joba but thats all they'll be able to spend on. even for them this is a rediculous amount of money being thrown around n i wont be surprised if it comes back to haunt them.
