Sutcliffe pitching Cubs to Peavy

Rick Sutcliffe, who won the 1984 National League Cy Young Award with the Cubs, has been working, on his own, to convince Padres pitcher Jake Peavy to approve a possible trade to the Cubs. Peavy is represented by San Diego-based agent Barry Axelrod, who retains Sutcliffe and former Cubs first baseman Mark Grace among his clients. "The Cubs are one of the teams Jake would strongly consider," Axelrod said Monday. "He likes an awful lot of things about the Cubs and their management. He has pretty good scouting reports from Sutcliffe and Grace and others. It is one of the places he would look upon favorably."

Who could blame him for wanting to play for the Cubs.

Laughs........................It should be why would the cubs want him...No thank you

It should be what? You know, if you took that guy's meat pole out of your mouth you might start making a little more sense.

Yea, can't imagine the Cubs wanting an ace pitcher, who's capable of winning a CY young, to add to their 2 other Cy Young Candidates.

Either way, the Cubs are in the playoffs next year, where they go from there, is up to them... Having a 1, 2, 3 of Big Z, Harden and Peavy would be a pretty confident start to any series.

He doesnt have to pitch Peavy... the Cubs just dont have enough talent to make it a fair trade. Yankees are offering Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy... case closed.

Spo - You are so right. Not only is Jake Peavy capable of winning the Cy Young; he actually WON it in 2007. I guess that puts him ahead of schedule of the Cubs 2 other Cy Young CANDIDATES!!

He'd be a good fit into the Cubs rotation.

I'm a Cubbie, but it's bad when a player has to be coaxed into coming aboard...

That would be an awesome start for any team. Problem for the Cubs was hitting more so than pitching. Either way, it would be a nice addition.

He does not want to play for loser Yankees, so yes that is the end of the story...just like Maddux never wanted to go there neither does his ex-teammate Peavy...some people are just not all about money

He already said the cubs were one of the teams he wanted to play for, so he did not need coaxed...what needed to be done was to tell him to stand firm against ownerships desire to move him to the yankees or some other team

it would be a solid rotation Peavy in it and the if we got Furcal we would be unstoppable all the way around

Cubs will win it all in 2013. Didn't the Mayans think the world will come to an end in 2112?

It's not closed if Peavy won't waive his no-trade.......regardless of what the Yanks are offering.

Are you out of your ****ing mind? The guy has Cy Young material, and would be an ace on many teams. I salivate at the thought of having Peavy on our team. A rotation of Zambrano, Dempster, Harden, Peavy, and Lilly would be absolutely SICK. And when the weakest pitcher on your team is a solid #4 or 5 pitcher, you know you are in great shape.

IF we do get Peavy, then all we would need is a southpaw with some power in the bat. Then, we wouldn't have any glaring weaknesses, and would be a very formidable team next year.

November 18, 2008  05:14 PM ET

Dempster's signed so this may become a none issue. The starting pitching is very solid for the Cubs. They have more pressing needs to fill.

Don't need Furcal. Fontenot and Theriot are a very good platoon at Shortstop and I'm not even sure Furcal would be an upgrade.

What they need to do is pick up Abreu to replace Fukudome in right, convince Abreu that the ivy cushions the wall and the wall won't hurt him, and turn Fukudome into the highest priced bench player in baseball.

go lvguy....we dont need furcal..its too much money...and why would you screw with chemistry...get rid of marquis and bring in peavy and you got urselves a deal...

why? not every pitcher these days is a sure thing coming out of FA market are they? Sorry but its not worth the risk.........Too many times too much money leads to a few games won.

The guy had a sub 3 ERA last year, a career 3.25 ERA, posted a 8.60 K/9, a 2.81 K/BB, walked 59 in 173 innings, and struck out 166 in 27 games. Those are solid numbers. So what exactly are you afraid of?
