Charges hurt Cuban's Cubs bid

Insider-trading charges brought Monday against Mark Cuban, an Internet entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, could weaken his chances of buying the Chicago Cubs. There already was doubt whether other baseball owners would welcome the loud and brash self-made billionaire into their fraternity if he had the highest bid. Now they have something to point to deny him entry, said a sports economist familiar with baseball ownership decisions. "The charges give the commissioner's office another pretext for turning him down," said Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Smith College. Robert DuPuy, president of Major League Baseball, declined to comment.

While the SEC is taking a look at Cuban, thery might want to investigate Selig too....

There's something unsavory in appearance about the Commissioner's Office allegeably trying to force Tribune management into ignoring higher offers in order to take a lower offer from one of his personal friends. Yes, MLB has an antitrust exemption, but it never was put into place to be used as a mechanism for shortchanging stockholders who invest in corporations....

Charges hurt Cuban's Cubs bid are exactly why the charges were filed in the first place.
the owners didn't want him in the club and one of these guys took matters in their own hands and made a phone call and got the ball rolling.

I thought he wasn't going to be able to buy the team anyway......

On another note... Does anyone have any idea how Pouljos won the MVP over Soto????

November 18, 2008  07:35 AM ET

Asbel's right. Ya gotta wonder if the timing of these charges are just a little too "convenient" for MLB in the first place.
But in this day and age, something like this shouldn't deter you from trying to buy a baseball team. I mean, heck, if Alaska Senator Stevens can win his seat again with a conviction on his record, why can't Cuban buy the Cubs? Unless MLB really does have some sort of conscience or moral standard. Nah, it's just a cranky old white guy's club anyhoo...

It's all about numbers...
Pujols - .357 37 HR 116 RBI .462 OBP .653 Slugging
Soto - .285 25 HR 86 RBI .364 OBP .504 Slugging

In all fairness, pundits have been saying since July, at least, that Pujols would probably win it.

I thought he missed a lot of last season due to injury, compiled with the fact that the Cardinals sucked last year.

Even though I'm a Twins fan, I hope Pedroia gets it. And as much as I dislike the White Sox, I would say Quentin should get it if he had played the whole season. I think all have are on an equal plane to make a case for MVP except K-rod. Yeah, he got the saves record. But the rest of his numbers don't really scream MVP to me...

I don't think he missed too much. Something like 15 games. The Cardinals sucking kinda reinforced the vote for MVP probably...

His odds could get worse than when hell freezes over?

I guess it would be against MLB "ethics" to give Soto the Rookie and MVP awards also....

November 18, 2008  08:20 AM ET

To me they should leave him be and approve him so he can own the cubs because obviouly the owners need him more than he needs them and it would be great ,great for baseball and definetly for the cubs it would definetly be great for the cubs and wrigley which would get major upgrades.

Since Baseball is more of business now you never know..............Baseball owners have morals?.HAhahhahahahhah yea right :)

More of business? Does that mean the same as extra to factory?

November 18, 2008  09:09 AM ET

i'm a chisox fan but even i would love to see cuban in cubbie blue. what the h3ll is there not to like? a guy who pays for a winner(well not a champion) and an owner that brings flair to the sport. this situation doesn't hurt cuban at all...cuz he has almost no shot at owning the cubs anyway, sources in the know have already said he has no chance. his screwup does nothing to hurt his chances...just might give them an excuse when they turn down his offer

do you honetly think that soto should've won over Pujols? Pujols' numbers this year, just as they are every year, are absolutly sick. If Bonds wasn't roiding Pujols would have a few more MVPs under his belt.

This is serious!!! I prediction is Mark gets jail time (ie Martha). He will be used as an example....his rep does't help in this situation. David Sterns will be the led juror.....not good.
