Michigan recruit may make instant impact

Not every verbal commitment is met with the same fanfare. Michigan's most recent commitment, West Palm Beach (Fla.) Cardinal Newman kicker Brendan Gibbons, may not generate as much excitement as a quarterback or defensive tackle, but it is likely he'll see the field just as quickly. Michigan will lose both placekickers after this season, leaving an opportunity that has not been claimed by any of the other kickers on the roster. Anticipating this void, Michigan recruited Houston's Anthony Fera in the summer, but the nation's second-ranked kicker decommitted in October to pledge his services to Penn State. Left without a replacement to departing seniors K.C. Lopata and Jason Gingell, Michigan turned to the 6-foot, 205-pound Gibbons. Michigan was already familiar with Gibbons after he placed first at their kicking camp this summer. Former Michigan kicker Brandon Kornblue ran that camp and worked Gibbons out personally just two weeks ago. He recommended Gibbons for a Michigan offer.

I can't wait to see Michigan's new High-Powered field goal offense next season!

I apologize for the above comment. It's too early in the morning to be sarcastic. This story does so much to help ease the pain of losing the Tyrell Pryor sweepstakes.

It's the option-spread-kick attack.

Don't look now, one second QB was running a sweep, next second there are three more points on the board on a first down in the red zone...

Good thing Zoltan is only a Junior, because it also look the RichRod offense relies heavily on having a great punter.

Got to be a little worried when a kicker is the one to make an instant impact and not the two incoming freshmen QB's.

Michigan will have a lot of work to do in the off season if it wants to rebound next season. The 2009 season will most likely be a struggle but hopefully not as much as this year.

I agree, this year has been tough. But RRod still has one way to get the Michigan faithful off his back. Its to go into Columbus and make a statement. Win with a backup QB, RB.

Do I think it will happen.... my head says no, my heart says yes, that's why I am a fan, all I am saying is many many sins of the 2008 would be forgiven if this happened...

Poor Wolves, getting excited about their second-choice kicker recruit. Go get 'em DickRod. Looking forward to seeing some Wolverine butt get kicked this Saturday.

November 18, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I hope they recruit a punter.

November 18, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Now the underlying winning strategy of RichRod is revealed. Field goal the opposition to death!

Don't hold your breath for a UM win over the sucknuts this year. Sheridan had his moment in the sun at Minny but he's not polished enough to duplicate that effort, especially against a very good OSU defense. Al Michaels' once said, "do you believe in miracles?" In this case, no I don't. UM will get soundly beat and it will mostly be due to their own errors, imho.

Agreed, there will be no magic in that game for UofM, certainly not on offense. As lame as it is to make a big deal out of a kicker, he is the #1 kicker in the nation, no? It's a start.

6-foot, 205...LOL they can use him on defense...maybe he can stop every team in the Big 10 from wearing that **** out lol

If he's the #1 kicker in the nation why is he their 2nd choice? I'm confused. The spread option is fun to watch and Pat White is great at it. I'm not convinced it is the best choice in November outside and north of the Mason/Dixon , we will see.

He also was a DE for his team and yes, he can HIT.

I've followed this kicker's high school career closley, and I'd be surprised if his golden toes don't lift Michigan to win TWICE as many games next year as they have this year. Of course, there's a chance the season could end in a complete disaster also.

This will help me out when NCAA 2010 comes out. We have a regular 'special teams only' challenge game around the holidays with my cousins. Kick-offs, punts, returns, and field goals only. No fakes allowed. Having a golden toe can help.
