NHL warns headhunters

In an effort to stop what has become a disturbing trend, the NHL is threatening stiffer penalties for hits to the head. A memo circulated by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell and posted in each club's dressing room warns that there will be consequences for skaters who don't play nice. "We cannot and will not tolerate blows to the head that are deliberate, avoidable and illegal," reads the memo. The NHL notice goes on to state: "The length of suspensions for illegal blows to the head will be increased if these incidents persist across the league. Taking steps to maintain the safest on-ice environment possible for the players remains our most important priority."

I officially would like to nominate Ruutu of Ottawa as a bigger p***k than Avery. If anyone didn't see last night, during the shootout, he missed his shotm then took the loose puck and shot it again. He was his usual self all game, except when Colton Orr came near him, at which point he hid behind the linesman and still threw a shot at Orr. But shooting that second shot during the shootout? Say what you want about Avery, even HE wouldn'tdo that.
By the way, I posted this here because I figured with a picture of one a*****e, I may as well right about another.

So I guess if they drop the gloves only body punches are allowed to be thrown.

Get rid of the instigation rule and let one of the heavy hitters of the leauge take care of Dbags like Avery and Ruutu and you'll see a decline in those type of hits. I guarantee it.

"....who don't play 'nice'......"?!!!!!! Oh, nasty beasts........

Say what you mean and name names for goodness sake and TRY to act like a leader. Wish someone would just board Bettman.

LGP......well said, sir. Sick Goddard on them. I hear Bisonette (sp?) is back, too.

I missed it as well. I guess they think this is the National Tiddlywinks League.

LGP.....yeah, I could see it: Avery slapping Goddard with his purse. CHORTLE!

November 18, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Stiffer penalties, eh? I'll believe when I see it.

That's it, lads. No more snot rockets. No more adjusting the ol' cup. No more evil eyes. Tsk tsk.

This is ridiculous. The NHL is trying to go the way of the NFL by outlawing good hockey plays. I agree, players shouldn't be trying to injure other players. However, this will lead to ridiculous fines and suspensions for things that are unavoidable, just like we have in the NFL. Memo to Bettman and Campbell - just because the NFL does something doesn't automatically mean that it's a good thing.

Sharks-Preds last evening perfect example of good, clean hard-nosed hockey. Their was a ton a rough play, hard hits, you name it, but it didn't sink to the level of depravity that defines "GOON" hockey. There were a few scraps, but there were no injuries due to player disrespect and that speaks volumes considering Tootoo was buzzing around the ice with mischief in his eyes. Let the players police the game, the headhunters will fade.

Bettman needs a shot to his head. He hasn't 'played nice' with hockey fans.

Since Spiny mentioned Ruutu: I've never been a fan or a hater of Ruutu but he has always annoyed me. Now I'm a hater.

Last night, not only did he pretend to drop the gloves like a pansy (attempting at drawing an instigator penalty on Voros), he got called for diving when pushed. LOL @ this chump. Wish he dove onto the top of his head.

Then he fans like a **** on the shootout attempt and takes another shot which Lundqvists blocks. I'm surprised there wasn't a bench-clearing brawl. Maybe they are saving it for Saturday?

He was commenting on elbows to the head during play. Ruutu threw one and got suspended recently and so did Tomas Pock. Ruutu (most likely a repeat offendor) only got two games and Pock got 5 for some reason and players complained.

They want to put an end to it now and I don't blame them because there are already enough ways to get injured in hockey.

The trouble is, just like the NFL, which is what Bettman desperately wants to be, they will on the one hand condemn these guys, and on the other hand, "encourage" them because it's just another selling point.
BETTMAN needs to walk under a lawn mower

ooooooooooooooh, the NHL's cracking down. What are they gonna do, start handing out 4-game suspensions instead of the 2 they've been giving? Stupid fu**ing joke of a league.
