Leach hasn't ruled out tough Vols job

The tradition is storied, the facilities are elite, and the job pays millions. Being the coach of the University of Tennessee football team certainly has it perks. But according to some experts, the job may not be as attractive as others because of its unique challenges. "Does Tennessee have all of the things that are necessary to be successful? It absolutely does," said college football expert Tony Barnhart of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But it's a harder job than the three main teams they have to compete with: Alabama, Florida and Georgia." The reasons are plentiful and include nationwide recruiting, facing three legitimate national title contenders each season and rebuilding one of the nation's worst offenses. As UT Athletics Director Mike Hamilton searches the country to replace Phillip Fulmer, the issues will surely be addressed during the interview process. The details of the job description have ignited an interesting argument about the appeal of the position. In the past week, multiple coaches have said they are not interested in the UT position. They include Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Jon Gruden, North Carolina Coach Butch Davis and Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith. Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach has not ruled out the possibility, but said last week he isn't paying "any attention" to any job openings. Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly said recently said he and his family like where they are.

Who ever follows Fulmer will basically be a seat warmer. They will be the person that has to follow him and set the table for the next real coach. No one worth a crap will want that job.

Huh? Your team must be a rival. I hate Tennessee but it is clearly one of the best jobs in the country.

November 18, 2008  08:47 AM ET

This is easily one of the top 15 or so programs in the country. They haven't asked me but I think they should go after someone that has proven themselves as a head coach, not an assistant.

November 18, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I could see Leach taking this job.

November 18, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Leach might take it, might be angling for a new contract. Gary Patterson is a helluva good coach.

November 18, 2008  10:22 AM ET

It'd be better than coaching in the weak conference that he's in now...

November 18, 2008  10:34 AM ET

This article is stupid...I mean really. Don't be fooled, there are big time coaches out there that want this gig. Do you really think someone like Leach is going to come out say"I'm interested" when TT could be playing for NC??!! not the time to be talk'in
and then this question: "Does Tennessee have all of the things that are necessary to be successful? had to LOL on that one...

November 18, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Keep your eyes on Schiano too... and not only for this gig...

Thats insane , top 5 program easily. Huge stadium and rabid fan base , I don't know where Fulmer got off track. It could have been the lack of discipline that snowballed to where he lost control of the program.
It does seem odd that Leach would even comment on another job considering how close his team is to playing for a championship.

competing with Florida, Alabama and Georgia. Like competing with Texas, Oklahoma & the rest of the Big 12 is any easier?

Big 12 is tough this year for sure.

November 18, 2008  01:08 PM ET

Yea...agreed...SEC is no easier (nor tougher) than the Big 12 this year. Does Leach have ties to UT?

Frankly, competing with "the rest of the big 12" probably is quite a bit easier than an SEC sched, but I would think recruiting would be a heck of a lot easier in Tennessee, as he's only getting Texas and Oklahoma's leftovers now.

Competing with Florida, Georgia and Alabama with a HUGE fan base and a stadium that seats over 100,000 is on a whole different level than being the historically 3rd best team in the state of Texas (behind Texas and the Aggies) and a 50,000 seat stadium. There is really no comparison.

To any rational person that would be a huge step up.

Leach is a really great coach and I wish him all the luck in the world. Tenn is not a top 5 or even top 10 program, but neither is Texas Tech, nor will it ever be one. Tenn probably pays better for sure, most SEC schools probably pay better than TT. Coach Leach will succeed if Tenn gives him a chance, but don't expect a top 10 finish for at least 3-4 years no matter who the next coach is at Tenn, not even Saban, Miles and Urban combined could make that happen at Tenn. And even longer before a SEC championship or NC contention will happen at Tenn. If Leach is alright with that fact and Tenn is alright with that fact, then Leach should consider the job, but if either one expects greatness antime soon, forget about it if you are going to coach there 3 to 5 years and be fired for not bringing a SEC or NC title. Where do you go after that? Stay at TT and live a long life, even if you do only get OU and UT rejects, it beats unimployment. But then again those buyout millions will go a long way down south...

Pat Summit set the bar very high at Tennessee - clean, consistently winning program, a half dozen national championship banners, one of the highest graduation rates in the nation. Winning games is just a baseline for a Tennessee coach.

Ideally, Tennessee wants a head football coach who will assemble a staff capable of adapting schemes to consistently compete and win with the talent they have, recruiting on a national scale, guiding the players' development as young men, and graduating a very high percentage of student athletes. Tennessee teams should execute - few to zero penalties. Tennessee players should avoid trouble off the field - no criminal behavior. Vols football culture is to compete effectively every second of every game - if they lose, the opposing team should have truly earned the victory and be paying the price physically and mentally during the following week. The coach who can achieve this at Tennessee may be among those known and named by sports journalists and bloggers or someone who hasn't crossed their minds as yet.

Tennessee won the SEC East LAST YEAR! They aren't that far away from being one of the top teams in the conference again. You seem very uninformed.

November 18, 2008  02:17 PM ET

TTU has OU and TU rejects? Never considered that one before . . . thanks for the insight. The TTU consistency since Spike **** and Mike Leach speak for themselves. Of course, TTU has not had the opportunity to disgrace our conference in BCS National Championship games as has OU . . . so, at least we have that going for us. The TTU real goal is to actually win a BCS Championship like TU for example. Think we can get there with Mike Leach.

November 18, 2008  02:19 PM ET

I AGREE WITH KING,THEY ARENT VERY FAR AWAY FROM COMPETING,BUT WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO LANE KIFFIN?I LIKE LEACH,BUT I THINK KIFFIN COULD RECRUIT BETTER.

I think what he is saying is alot like what happened at Florida. Nobody wants to be the one to come in right after Fulmer. Let a life long assistant get a crack ala Zook, distance the program from Fulmer and then bring in a world class coach to be the next savior ala Meyer. Even though they have fallen on semi hard times recently (like what was said they did actually win the SEC east just last year) this program is still embedded with Fulmer's name. Let it distance itself from him for a couple years really fall on harder times and then you will see some real interest from some real big names ready to come in and leave their mark.
