NFL considers modifying replay rules

NFL officials and members of the league's competition committee are discussing a possible change to the instant replay procedures following an officiating mistake that cost Pittsburgh a touchdown on the final play of its 11-10 win Sunday over San Diego. The potential procedural modification would permit the referee on the field to consult with the replay booth more than once on a call. Under current replay rules, only one consultation is allowed. Mike Pereira, the NFL's vice president of officiating, said during a televised interview yesterday that the modification could be made before this season's playoffs and should prevent a recurrence of Sunday's gaffe, in which the officials ruled erroneously even after a replay review that a touchdown by Steelers safety Troy Polamalu didn't count. "Once you leave the sideline monitor, you can't go back," Pereira said during an interview with ESPN. "The replay assistant can't buzz you back. I think that is the way we can look forward to try to implement a system to where it doesn't happen again."

Great, yet another reason to provide Referee's more opportunities to blow calls, delay games, and extend the amount of time a channel has to squeeze in commercials.

Howzabout getting it right the FIRST time. Or at least the SECOND time (i.e., the replay).

The simple fix - don't leave the dang replay booth until the Ref had it square with the Replay Official.

A time limit is in place for how long the ref can stay under the replay hood.

the refs have been a major issue this year. They are blowing calls left and right. When they get challenged on the calls they seem to hesitent on overturning their ruling.

November 18, 2008  10:05 AM ET

They didn't seem hesitant to overturn Polamalu's TD though.......

November 18, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Glad they came to an understanding on this, but what about the gamblers?
I know screw'em, its time we got back to old fashion smash'em beat'em up football.
Refs can make ruling on field goals made, offsides ect...
But Let the dang players PLAY!!! Its in the fans best interests.

simple rule change would fix the ref/replay issue. start fining and if need be, firing some of the refs that are making these mistakes.

November 18, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I like the instant replay, I think that it can be very useful and help get the calls right. However we all knew that this day would come ever since the NFL instated replay reviews. It was bound to happen sooner or later, that the instant replay would become a hassel and some of the calls are made wrong. In defense to the instant replay system, it is just a computer it does what you tell it to. The refs are the ones making the calls, get better refs who know the rules inside and out, and there will be a lot better calls made.

Good point. They arent supposed to overturn calls unless they have clear evidence that the call on the field was wrong yet they changed this even after looking at the replay and proving the call on the filed was correct. Something smells fishy here.

Do away with reviews during the games.
Have the league review officials performance and fine/fire the ones that do not measure up. (and I'm not referring to the ocassional missed call, no one is perfect besides Al Davis)
All the repay/review has gotten us is longer games.

Gamblers!!!! Every one feels soo bad for the people that lost money on that game. What about the people who bet the Chargers and were blessed with the Luck O the Irish on that blown call.

Wake up Dorothy you're not in Kansas, a fixed game is a fixed game I don't care how and who does the replay. The only fair way is to: 1) Do away with the replay all the way 2) Give it to an unbiased and unidentified official who lives in his own room at the stadium that reports only to the Commisioner. Me personally go with #1 then the officials will appreciate what bad calls really mean when they have to sneak in and out of stadiums and not for gambling purposes! Some of the old true sports fans understand that one.

At some point the problem still needs to be addressed. If it were addressed on the Chargers game, we wouldn't have this problem.
