Mavericks talking trades

The Mavs have engaged in "casual" conversations involving the Clippers' Chris Kaman, the Bobcats' Gerald Wallace, the Knicks' Stephon Marbury, their own Jerry Stackhouse and many others, NBA sources tell DallasBasketball.com. Additionally, and on the record, Mavs GM Donnie Nelson doesn't deny such activity, telling DB.com that "we've been busy in talking to everybody, looking at everything, trying to stay on top of any opportunity."

Dallas could do something to shake up that roster. All the above names make sense except for Stephon. One, they have nothing for that contract of his. Two, I am sure Steph being a backup to J. Kidd won't sit well with either one of them.

Wouldn't mind Gerald Wallace. Maybe convince MJ to either take Stackhouse or Josh Howard. I don't know the salaries involved, to be honest, I am just throwing out names.

The move that makes the most sense for the Mavs is a deal for Kaman. This probably will never happen because nobody is going to take on Dampier's contract, but a double-double in the low post makes all the difference in the world to this team. Wallace for Howard is just a lateral move, and Marbury, well...

Unfortunately this team needs a little shaking up-
With Dirk still in his prime for 2-3 more years
- they have a decent window-

November 18, 2008  11:09 AM ET

That's what happens when you let your best big guy defender go, Mr Cuban. That Kidd trade was the worst thing I have ever seen.

November 18, 2008  11:31 AM ET

What player are you referring to?

November 18, 2008  12:11 PM ET

jerry you and many other players of the dallas mavericks had avery johnson dismissed. cuban said that he didnt want to fire avery johnson, but players were threatening to opt out, he said this on espn and i am not taking anything out of context. well avery is gone and you still want to go...absolutely not. gentlemen you have taking a man's lively hood away and you cant have it both ways. you had this man fired, now you must hold up to your end of the bargain. don't be a punk now jerry ....this time the cat wins and the mouse loses

^ Avery has a job at ESPN so I don't think he's hurting financially. Yeah they need to move Stackhouse and if Dampier didn't have that big contract (partially due to Avery pushing to get him) then he would've been dumped along time ago. Dampier is a dissapointment. Kamen would be a great upgrade over him. Marbury doesn't need to come to Dallas, and Gerald Wallace would be good.

November 18, 2008  12:33 PM ET

If they can grab Gerald Wallace without giving up Josh Howard that would be an excellent move for the Mavs. It would hopefully give them the dimesnion that they need.

They can maybe trade Stackhouse for Kaman? Dampier for Wallace?

I love the idea and it would be the best scenario for Dallas but that's not going to happen.

For this to work everybody has to be happy. The best trade for everyone to be happy is JHo and Stack to Charlotte, Gerald Wallace to the Clippers, and Kaman to the Mavericks.

There is no way to get rid of Dampier. Dampier is stuck in Dallas. This guy is overpaid for crappy things that he shows. He is very inconsistent and does not show up 95% of the time. He is just basically getting paid.

why would they need both ?
they play basically the same postion & have roughly same game

They should move howard while he has value- wallace may not
give you the points...but he (IMO) gives you a better all-around game

I was thinking the same thing. I agree it was a stupid move. Cuban has got to be kicking himself right now as the Mavs struggle to beat even the worst teams (yet somehow compete against the best) and all the while Devon Harris is starting off his year like an all star PG. I think Avery was right when he said he held Harris back too much and that was his regret.

I agree with Hllywd that the only deal that would really help the Mavs is one for Kaman out of the deals suggested. I'm thinking Cuban may pay the price to eat some of Damp's contract somehow. Since he isn't going to get the Cubs he might as well spend his extra cash on the Mavs. :)

Regardless of what trade it is, there is no doubt that Dallas needs some sort of a change. The beat the Nicks in OT and consider that improvement. That is a scary thought.

November 18, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Fact is, Avery Johnson made this butter soft team tougher than they ever where, he also made Dirk's ungrateful arse a better player. The players whined Avery out of town, Cuban panicked and traded for a PG with more miles on him than a 78 Charger and now look, they're not even in the upper echelon of the West. I'll be the first one to say the NBA, Steve Javie and David Stern basically screwed them out of a title, but everything else was one dumb gut-reaction after another. Dirk's another one of those guys who will retire with great stats..no rings.

They can move Howard to shooting guard OR they can play small ball and move Dirk to center. He can assume the Shawn Marion position. J-Ho is a great defender a decent rebounder and can still get his numbers through that position even with the addition of Wallace.

November 18, 2008  02:38 PM ET

I do agree they need to trade J-Ho. However they would need in place a bonified 2nd scorer and a low post presence.

Maybe at the end of the season or mid-season if Phoenix doesn't work out, they can trade Josh Howard, Stackhouse, Dampier, Terry for Amare Stoudamire and Barboussa.

or Trade Josh Howard and a couple of players to Toronto for Chris Bosh and try to get some value for him before he bolts in Free Agency?

avery is still getting paid his salary this year from cuban and honestly i think he made a big mistake they want to have a birthday party during playoffs u have to ******ng kidding me the players were the problem not avery as u can see another good coach and no difference in the team what they need is discipline and shaking up the roster completely in with the new and out with the old. keep dirk and trade everyone else get marbury for kid anything but change things around if cuban wants to win

Only part true. Avery did make Dallas a team with D, which now seems to be gone. This being said, you can't overlook the screwed up things either. He played Nellie ball against the Warriors which HURT his team not only physically in play but mentally. Then there is the completely absurd way he played Kidd in the playoffs. If you don't want him to play then sit him on the bench but don't take a guy who's #1 ability is passing and post him up in a corner as if he is a great jump shooter. Avery made Kidd look far worse than his age did. The only thing worse he could have done we be to post Kidd underneath and put Dampier at PG.

I liked Avery as a coach. He did a LOT of great things for the Mavs and I hate to see him blamed for everything. It wasn't just him but he was certainly part of it.

The Mavs are now in a rebuilding stage. The Kidd move is still highly questionable considering his age and dropoff in productivity. Nowitzki doesn't seem to want to lead the team as he should and is rather soft. Dampier is a decent rebounder, but was Dampier a better signing than keeping Nash?

I don't see Kaman or Wallace as the answer here. There are many positions that need to be filled since the existing talent isn't doing their job. Howard is the only one on that team that has any marketeable trade value and Cuban would be absolutely asinine to let him go. However, I don't see much choice in the matter if they really want to get back to consideration as an elite team in the west. Howard or Nowitzki must go to make it right, so take your choice.
