Exec: Peavy going to Braves or nowhere

Braves GM Frank Wren bowed out of the long-running trade talks involving Padres star pitcher Jake Peavy a few days ago, but Wren didn't appear to completely shut the door on Peavy and at least one National League executive said he still believes the Braves remain the most likely destination for Peavy. "He'll wind up a Brave or Padre,'' that exec predicted.

"He'll wind up a Brave or Padre,''

Which in layman's terms means that he will either be traded or he won't.

I still find it inconceivable that ANY team would trade a #1 starter at his age. I really feel bad for padre fans- obviously the team has no intention on trying to win. PATHETIC

November 19, 2008  11:11 AM ET

That sounds right. The headline.
And the Padres have had success in a weak division, it never seemed like they ever put together a complete team.

I think Peavy is afraid to exit the friendly expanse of Petco Park. Then all those warning track flyballs become HR.

Nah. He's just a Southern guy who won't be very comfortable anywhere else. I mean, he wanted to go the Astros and think how many flyballs would've been homers at Minute Maid Park's Crawford boxes! He's okay with Cali, likes to hit, but would rather be with the Astros or Braves because that's closer to where he's from.

we need him, c'mon Frank make the deal for Escobar, then bring Furcal back to Atlanta.

November 19, 2008  02:04 PM ET

The exec that spoke with SI.COM? None other than the latest addition to the Astro's front office, Mr. Roger Clemens, who know a thing or two about making definitive decisions and sticking to 'em!!!!!!!

November 19, 2008  02:07 PM ET

The more I look at the Braves situation, the more I'm worried that they won't be able to compete next year. Assuming they get Peavy (and give up Escobar) they still need a legit 35+ homerun bat in their lineup, a productive leadoff hitter (NOT Kelly Johnson) and a solid number 2 and 3 pitchers. Peavy or not that's still 5 big time players that they need. I don't think they get 3 out of 5.
I think Atlanta should trade for Peavy, sign the Japenese dude, and a third tier pitcher (Perez or Garland) get Renteria for short and wait til the deadline to pick up a big bat if they're still in the mix.

November 19, 2008  02:08 PM ET

^^^ sorry, *4 big time players

November 19, 2008  02:10 PM ET

There's something wrong with this whole picture. It half seems like he doesn't want to be traded. And I agree with the comments of some of the others regarding San Diego's desire to do what is necessary to win and keep fannies in the seats. Too bad.

He knew a thing or two about making a definite decision to stick it to an underaged, redneck ska-ank Mindy McCready...

They are two seasons out...in my opinion.

They should have never traded Tex. They need at least one or two big bats in the lineup, and then follow the formula of other winning teams now -- stack your lineup with guys that can bat people in and get on base.

Oh, and shore up their starting pitching, holy crap get rid of Mike Hampton the dude's a bum.

November 19, 2008  07:32 PM ET

^^^Agreed... if they bring back Hampton to anything more than a $4 million dollar/ 1 year deal I'm gonna be pissed. He kind of owes us that much.

November 19, 2008  09:29 PM ET

As a Padres fan facing the reality of how bad the situation is for this organization and the divorce of John Moores, I'm betting the Padres eventually get fully fleeced because they are so desperate to cut and clash payroll as soon as possible (if the Trevor Hoffman disgrace doesn't convince you nothing will).
My greatest fear/belief is that in time Kevin Towers will end trading Peavy to the Yankees in return for Kennedy and Hughes. It will turn out to be a terrible trade for both organizations in the long run.

I feel like Hampton has been effective as he could be, minus the injuries, in his Braves career. It IS unfortunate that he was so oft injured, but having not pitched in 3 years, I think he satisfied alot of Braves execs and probably alot of Braves fans, myself included, in his short '08 season. It is also unfortunate that once Hampton DID get back in the rotation was at the exact same time that Huddy went down. I think he will have a good year in '09, and I seriously hope that it's with the Braves.

How about this for a third wheel deal...

Dodgers get Peavy from Padres and Cano & Swisher from Yankees

Yankees get Matt Kemp from Dodgers and Adrian Gonzalez from Pads

Padres get James Loney, Saito, and prospects from Dodgers, and Melky Cabrera (or Austin Jackson), Ian Kennedy, and prospects from Yankees.

The Dodgers are going to lose Derek Lowe, and need a 2B. I'm sure they'd love to have Peavy join Billingsley at the top of the rotation, and Torre is a Cano fan. Torre would also like the flexibility of a switch hitting 1B.

The Yankees would fill their holes at 1B and CF, and would make them younger in the process. Gonzalez is comparable to Tex (except for the giant contract), is younger, and is putting up huge numbers in a pitcher's park. Kemp is 24, has a ton of speed, and is a solid fielder. They should then sign O. Hudson for 2B.

The Padres will be doing what the A's always do...drop the guys they can't sign while reloading with young talent. Loney is a young, solid 1B and Saito could take over the closer role from Hoffman. Throw in a couple pitching prospects from LA & NY.

Thoughts?
