Rivers: KG's suspension 'a joke'

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers were more than surprised by the NBA's suspension of Kevin Garnett for last night's 110-101 win over the Knicks. "When I heard they were investigating it, I thought, 'Was there something that happened after the game, were there things said?' " Ainge said of the incident involving Garnett and the Bucks' Andrew Bogut Saturday night in Milwaukee. "But the act itself, I never dreamed it would warrant a suspension. "Those kind of plays happen three times in every practice. That's a pretty common basketball play. I commend Kevin for his restraint." Instead of a commendation, though, Garnett was suspended and fined one game's salary, about $250,000. Garnett fouled Bogut under the basket, Bogut appearing to strike Garnett's mouth with his follow-through, Garnett pushing away. Both were assessed technicals but no further penalties on the skirmish after lead official Bennett Salvatore viewed the replay. Bogut did get ejected because it was his second T. "I think it's a joke, honestly," Rivers said. "But they did it and we have to live with it. I'm just amazed the officials looked at the play for 5-10 minutes and didn't even think Kevin deserved more than just a technical, and the league looks at it and gives him a suspension. I just wish we had more consistency in our league, I really do."

Rivers....it's just a game boy. Get over it. Your a joke. They won the title...they did...not you. You were just there and they did it....the three boys. Stop the whinning.

but I guess, no ones laughing.

November 19, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Will all incidences like THIS result in suspensions? What a mess this league will become if it reviews every marginal call and over reacts, or uses it as a money raiser! Hate the Celtics if you wish, but when it happens to your team what are you going to say?

November 19, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Welcome to the NBA. Ooops, is that the NFL? The league of rules inconsistencies.

November 19, 2008  08:49 AM ET

It was one game and it's one that you won without him.

However, I really do believe that the NBA is inconsistent with their fines and suspensions.

November 19, 2008  08:56 AM ET

so true so true. preach it doc. it truly is a joke. it should have been called a foul. at the most a technical.

November 19, 2008  09:18 AM ET

This is pretty ridiculous. MInor confrontation that no way warranted a suspension.

November 19, 2008  09:30 AM ET

He is right. How can the officials review the play and come out with it just warranting a technical and then the league somehow finds it worthy of a supsension? I'm a conspiracy theorist but it does come at a time where the Celts were going to play the Knicks and the Knicks actually were in 2nd in their division right behind the Celtics. No KG means Knicks actually had a fighting chance to win that game. They still lost but makes you wonder if Stern was trying to alter the outcome of that game. Wouldn't be the first time the league has been accused of fixing games.

November 19, 2008  09:42 AM ET

You know you can't touch none of the white boys in the league, you must be crazy. That's sending a quick message especially the way the Celtics man handled my team in the finals.

November 19, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Ok so why is anyone surprised about there being one set of rules for one group and another set for another group. Look at the way refs call traveling. If you are an established superstar they are more lenient. Now it is at the league level. Nobody seems to question Shag shoving other players. I could handle the one game suspension but come on the fine too.

Has nothing to do with white or black. Has everything to do with green. Stern and Dolan are in cahoots and Stern is trying to do everything he can to get the Knicks in the playoffs. Suspending KG so Knicks would have a chance to beat the Celts is one way to do that. Sadly the Knicks still suck so it didn't work. The league wants a big market team in the playoffs and getting the Knicks back in would give a big boost to ratings as NYC would watch for a change.

Hey! That is not a push from Shaq. That move is perfectly legal (only for Shaq though) and is known as the Shaq Diesel or the Shaq power move. Lol but yeah superstars get preferential treatment. Also if you so much as look at one wrong or breathe on them expect a whistle.

It's about time he got called on some of the crap he down out there every night. He is notorious for illegal screens and notorious for taunting that's never called (see KG vs. Calderon). He slapped the guy...it's a hit to the head...it's a suspension. Simple as that. Rules are the rules.

It is but that play happens a lot and is not called many times. I believe it should be called but it needs to be consistently called.

November 19, 2008  10:55 AM ET

If the NBA isn't careful, it will become the new NHL - publically decrying violence but actually encouraging it in practice.

November 19, 2008  11:12 AM ET

If you saw what KG did, you will shake your head in amazement. Either they are showing the wrong video for the event that caused the suspension or , ah, I have no good reason why they would suspend KG. If anything, Bogut should have been suspended. And compared to what Shaq did to stuckey, wow, Shaq should have gotten 10 games.
If you are hating on Doc Rivers, you haven't seen one of his interviews. He is a class man and a master motivator.

agreed

bcoltrinari, I agree with you. All calls should be consistent but have they ever been? They're made at the discretion of the refs and depending on who you have on any given night, you may or may not get it. You know there are some real **** refs who are notorious for crappy calls.

November 19, 2008  11:28 AM ET

I disagree BBallerwNoShot. Shaq's hit on Stuckey was just a hard foul. Shaq is just a much bigger man and Stuckey fell funny. You can see he was going straight for the ball and fouled him with his body. Garnett smacked Bogut after getting an elbow from Bogut but Bogut was clearly fighting for the ball.

Dude; how big do men grow in Florida? You seem to have that "boy" thing pretty bad. Why don't you take something for it.
