Inside Muschamp's new Texas deal

Texas players had heard the rumors and braced themselves for the worst Tuesday afternoon at a team meeting. When head coach Mack Brown entered with defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, the fears seemed to be confirmed. Most thought the enthusiastic, intense Muschamp would exit as previous coordinators Greg Robinson and Gene Chizik had. Then Brown took the conversation in an unexpected direction, one that didn't involve Clemson or Tennessee or Washington. Muschamp would be staying as defensive coordinator, Brown told the team, and eventually become head coach. The family was staying together, Brown said. Brown lobbied for the money to hire the best young defensive coordinator in the country last season, identified Muschamp and lured him from Auburn. Since then, he has praised Muschamp's work ethic, his lack of ego and the way he's blended with the staff. Brown worked with Dodds and UT president William Powers to keep him after schools began targeting Muschamp for interviews during Texas' bye week. In return, Muschamp has carefully observed Brown's ability to deal with boosters, media and the administration. It's an acknowledged weak spot for someone more comfortable chest-bumping players and bleeding on the sidelines.

Congrats to Muschamp. Texas is a big time program.

Texas' fans everywhere are ecstatic about this move. I was almost sure he was leaving after this year.

Good move by Texas. It's clear that he was coveted and this is the way to keep him in the fold.

I'm digging this move by Texas!!

I wonder what the BCA has to say about all of the major programs lining up replacements without giving minorities the opportunity to interview.

November 19, 2008  10:45 AM ET

They took a page out of the Florida State book with Jimbo Fisher. I assume Mack Brown will be retiring within a few years? Does anyone know this?

November 19, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Oi, yet another person off the Tenn list. This is not looking good.

Mack Brown still has 8 years left on his contract. Though its highly rumored when Texas' Athletic Director Dodds steps down, Mack will become AD. OC Greg Davis will retire when that happens, leaving the offensive coordinator position to running backs coach Major Applewhite. Keep in mind that these are 'rumors'.

Thanks for the info. Pretty interesting.

Sounds like a solid plan. I am sure it is predicated on winning. Two subpar seasons can wreck things like this.

FSU's succession plan isn't looking as pretty as it was last year, despite Fisher being a good coach.

I'm crying reading this, no not tears of joy or remorse, were talking laughing my tail off tears. Go (whoever is playing texas) everyweek.

Smart move locking Muschamp up as DC for the next few years. Continuity is important on defense. The guy can coach and he's a great recruiter (this from an OU fan). But I don't think naming him HC designate was a smart move. Has Greg Davis said "I am retiring when Mack does" or is that wishful Longhorn thinking? Everyone says "Major isn't ready yet" but there won't be any hard feelings on his end over this? This kind of thing divides a coaching staff. Look at Florida State. You need clear direction on a day to day basis, and when coaches are trying to please both the boss and the future boss, that can be tough. I can see there being a little resentment from some of the older guys as well. Texas is where it is this year because of Greg Davis' offense, not Muschamp's defense. Worst of all... how is Texas not going to do interviews for its job? Head coach of the Longhorns is probably the most attractive job in college football... and they don't want to see who is interested?

Dodds and Mack are smart guys. My guess is they know that Muschamp won't hang around til Mack retires. But they want to keep him around a few years and this was the best way to do it.

Ah, Thanks for the info... I read this and thought I had missed the Mack Brown retiring announcement.

November 19, 2008  01:51 PM ET

We'll see if this "coach in waiting" stuff works at programs like FSU and Texas. I bet it would considering that the players already know the next head coach, and the next guy is already a [insert school name here] guy.

November 19, 2008  01:54 PM ET

Crack Brown and MusCHUMP are a perfect match for each other. I'm sure both of these football genius's will bring home a lot of championship trophies. UT is the absolute best.
Austin is the absolute best . God bless Texass.

November 19, 2008  02:13 PM ET

As an Oklahoma fan,THIS SUCKS.This guy is a great defensive coach and I bet will be one heck of a head coach.Oh Well,we will just have to be content with stealing the best players from the state of Texas.

November 19, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Ok, my last comment was a little cynical. I'm not that impressed with Muschump so far. Just because he runs around the sides lines like his hair's on fire doesn't mean he is a defensive genius. I remember during the Kansas game, the temperature was in the upper 40's, but Muschump's shirt was soaked in sweat. His defense did shut down the Jayhawks, but so what? Let's give him a few years before we make this guy out to be the next Saban.

November 19, 2008  03:38 PM ET

I agree it is a smart move by Texas. I just wonder how much Tennessee's hunt for a new coach influenced this.

November 19, 2008  04:00 PM ET

Exactly JOENAUSTIN, they didn't wanna loose this guy... I'm a huge Mizzou fan and the way that Texas defense shut down our offense in the first half of that game was classic... Great move by the Longhorns...
