Weis calling Irish plays again

Once again, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis will call the offensive plays Saturday against Syracuse. And once again, offensive coordinator Mike Haywood coincidentally won't be around as Weis prepares to do so. With Weis announcing Haywood would miss one or two practices this week for "personal reasons" -- and with Haywood declining to meet with the media after practice Tuesday -- speculation swirled about Haywood's future. Realistically, that began as soon as Weis assumed play-calling duties for the Navy game. Haywood's absence this week is not family-related, as it was said to be last week with a cousin's death, nor is it health-related. Weis did say he was in "support" of Haywood. It would be unusual but not implausible for Haywood to interview at schools with coaching openings at this point. "This is not like any friction with anyone," Weis said. "He has some things he needs to deal with and I'm supportive of that. He asked me to leave it at that."

you have one more win them ty. why are you still working 3rd highest paying coach.? I guess the ratio for win losses entitles white coach one more season than blacks even if they have the same record which resulted in the termination. this country really needs to keep affirmative action. for those who say that he gave you Brady Quinn...wrong...Ty's recruit. Santa Clausen has not delivered any gifts to alumni and they want at a minimum a BCS at large bowl. He has not produce, so everyone says wait til next year. You didnt give Ty that luxury why should we give him that opportunity if this country is about the equality. Irish your showing a bit bias/ racism and many critics on ESPN and beyond are pulling your white sheet. I'LL SCREAM THIS TO THE HEAVENS. Honestly Ty should have never left stanford but he thought he was an equal and you all remind him this is 1968 and not 2008. Keep it going fellas your rope is doing its jobs hanging african american to dry with your double standard.

Jamie - first, I say you have the right to your opinion, and to use the first amendment and voice that opinion. You can scream all day long if you want. This comparison is over. Ty was the coach at Washington for the last four years. Now he's looking for a new job. (Hey, maybe EsPN will give him a job!?)

Lets pretend you have a job, and the people who pay you found out that you were "looking around" at other jobs. Then you get fired. Who's at fault?

November 19, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Jamie - If you would look at the internal issues going on instead of look at the outside of this you wouldn't look to ignorant and uneducated. Ususally when people are uneducated they tend to start pointing the finger at the race issue.

November 19, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Look, I'm no Irish fan but the makings of a good offense is there. Clausen has his moments and with that O-line more experienced next year, some good receivers in Tate and Floyd, and hopefully a more breakaway running back this team could be good next year.

Not 12-0 good, but a 9 or 10 win season is definitely achievable for the Irish.

November 19, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Beautiful.
Ole Charlie steps up to call the plays against Navy and Syracuse. Hell, I could call the plays for them from down here in Florida against Syracuse and ND would win by 5 touchdowns.
It'll be interesting to see if Charlie is still calling the plays against USC.

November 19, 2008  08:57 AM ET

I can't stand the Irish...but I am still level headed enough to see that this was far from a "race" issue. Are the Chiefs "reverse racists" because they continue to employ Herm Edwards? How about the lack-luster Browns and Romeo? As much as I hate to admit it, Charlie is bringing in big recruits...which speaks to the furture of the program. Ty did not.

I still hate the Irish, but the Ty issue is dead.

November 19, 2008  08:58 AM ET

So he decides to call the plays against SYRACUSE? I could call the offensive plays for ND and get a win over the Cuse'. Call the plays against USC and see how much of an offensive genius he really is.

November 19, 2008  09:50 AM ET

I think Haywood is on his way out. Nothing against him, but as the OC & the running backs coach, it's his job to get the most out of them. ND gets 57 rushing yards a game.

Good luck where ever you go Mr. Haywood.

GO IRISH!

They should let that one kid call the plays who was sick..."pass right." That actually worked

November 19, 2008  10:15 AM ET

I don't really know what is really going on here, but
I am kind of reading between the lines here and making
a guess that Haywood's days are numbered here. I
really don't think there is too much difference between
Haywood and CW calling plays at this point. The last
three years seem to be much of the same plays, which
seem predictable and not much variation as far as
the kind of plays and formations. I do agree with
bourbonheel87 that we'll see what kind of caller CW is
against one of the best defenses in the country in USC.

JamieC, alls I can say is that ND does have two black
coodinators under employment right now, where as for
TY, in his seven years as a head coach at ND & UDub
has yet to hire a black for any of his coodinator positions.
Now who is racist and hindering the advancement of young
black coaches now.
ND hired TY and he wasn't getting the complete job done
as a head coach (there is more to being a head coach
than just wins and loses) and this is why he was let go.
Look at the schools he has coached and what a mess he
has left behind.
1. Stanford 8 yrs ago and still are trying to recover
being just a .500 ball club, and this is one of their
better yrs. since he left.
2. ND after 4 yrs. and still mediocer but seem to
finally taking a turn upward ever so slowly.
3. As for UDub, only time will , but having 4 yrs
of recruiting (bad) my guess it will take at least
5-7 yrs. before they recover from his mess.
Unless you are exposed to a team on a local level point
of veiw and not a national point of view, then you would
have no idea on what is actually going on with that
particular school b/c you're not getting the inner nuts and
bolts just a surface skim from national media outlets.

That's not cool dude! If you even konw about the "pass right" story, then you know the young boy died before the game againt Washington back in 2005!

November 19, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Charlie's offensive play calling prowess vs a lame duck hapless defense. ND by 3 in OT. Three children missing and presumed eaten.

Don't feel bad tree. The quote might have been uniformed and perhaps "not cool dude", but spot on anyway.

Weis needs to realize what he is... A Coordinator... NOT a head coach... But its too late.... His overblown ego won't let him go back... Welcome to the land of mediocrity Irish... Pull up a chair and get comfy... You are going to be there awhile

November 19, 2008  11:05 AM ET

It had to be hard for ND fans to hear Herbstreit load up on them as a "perpetual 7-5, so get over it" team. Ouch!!!

GatorBaitor were you denied admission to ND some time ago...? Your "hate" of that institution seems to go way beyond their football program or CW...

I have stated on several occasions that I don't hate ND. I hate that they are living in denial of a terrible hire and an even worse extension.

I cannot stand Weis because I am convinced he is a cheater and ND deserves better.
