Nats plays down Teixeira chances

Washington Nationals President Stan Kasten yesterday sought to quell speculation regarding the team's reported pursuit of first baseman Mark Teixeira, arguably the most coveted free agent on this winter's market, saying any such talk "is way ahead of us here." Kasten declined to characterize the Nationals' interest in Teixeira, 28, a Severna Park product who split this past season between the Braves and Angels, hitting a combined .308 with 33 homers and 121 RBI, his fifth straight 30-homer, 100-RBI season. The Washington Post, quoting team and league sources, reported Friday that the Nationals were preparing an offer for Teixeira that they believed would be competitive with others he is likely to receive. No indication was given as to the timing of such an offer. However, Kasten yesterday played down the Nationals' chances of landing Teixeira, who is expected to attract interest from some of the game's richest teams, including the Angels, Red Sox and -- possibly -- Yankees, and who could command a contract of $150 million or more for eight or more years. "I don't want people to have unrealistic expectations," Kasten said.

It's almost like the Nat's Braintrust is all sitting around the office drinking beer and getting wacky, and the phones rings, and someone sez..."Hey, it's that pole smoker from the Post, and he's asking for some Hot Stove rumors!"...and everybody starts laughing and somebody sez..."Tell that turd that we are crunching numbers on Tex, but that quote is in confidence....and remind him that we are about to corner Manny and want to see the med files on Sabathia too while your at it!"

Everybody starts really laughing, and then they tell the Nat's traveling secretary to call out for a limo and they all get their freak on at a strip joint.

Why would he want to go to the Nats anyway, make a ton of money and finish in last place every year?

November 19, 2008  07:58 AM ET

The Nationals have weak starting pitching; a weak offensive core; a dreadful bench; an OF crowded with unfulfilled potential (Kearns, Dukes, Milledge, etc...); poor defense up the middle; Shell, an injured Cordero, and a lot of dead weight for a bullpen; and a modest payroll. The Nats could offer Teixeira AROD money for 10 years and it is doubtful that he'd seriously consider it. When we're talking about Teixeira, we're talking about a soon-to-be senti-millionaire, regardless where he signs. He doesn't have to go anywhere that he won't win. The Nats (and for that matter, the Orioles) have zero chance of landing the big guy.

Better chance of seeing Mel Gibson in Israel meeting with the Prime Minister.

i actually think it would be funny to see this "about to be extremely overpaid" guy end up in a cess pool like Washintgon. no ma

If Tex went to the Nationals he would soon find himself much like Arod did in 2003. The best player on the worst team and he would soon start demanding to be traded to a winning team.

The Nats need him. Millions of dollars into a new stadium, and not one player speaking english.......

No. What the Nats need is to be contracted.

amen to that. we all seem to forget that they were the expos.

that new stadium is all about turd polishing - a clear case of seeing if fans would bite on the digs even though the team sucks. I can see washington losing its 3rd team in its baseball history. the area clamors for a team for years and finally gets one and its a piece of crap expansion team. the DC area has a huge potential fan base but they need to field a better team quickly..

Well the Nats have cheap owners who don't want to spend money to make the team better. Apparently they just want to own the team so they can say we own a major league sports team and impress their other rich friends. That and to make some money when they cash those checks from the Yankees er... I mean revenue sharing and luxury tax.

The question is "Does Tex want to play for the Nats"????

That isn't the question. The question is who is paying the most money because that is where Boras will send Tex. Tex has no say in the matter. Look what Boras did in 2000 when he sent Arod to the Rangers. Arod probably wanted to go to a winning team but instead got sent to the last place Rangers because they offered the most money.

Have The Nats even bid on him? What is there to play down?

November 19, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Typical D.C. hype. The Nats should focus on winning 60 games in 2009. Then 70 in 2010, then strive for .500 in 2011. Why did they trade Rauch again?

Now THAT would be a Letha Shalom!!!!!!!!

November 19, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Winning, superstar players cost a great deal of money and go with winning, superstar teams who happen to HAVE a great deal of money. That somewhat reduces the field of play. I think the nats should take him, and then ask the tax payers for some sort of bailout plan. Hell, we're paying for everything else around here, why not Tex?

Um, no thanks. I just hired some broad named Palin for that very thing. As long as I keep her in lipstick and sneakers she's fine.
