Dallas writer leaves Pedroia off MVP ballot

In winning the MVP award, Dustin Pedroia was named on 27 of the 28 American League MVP ballots. The one writer to leave Pedroia off? That was Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, a well-respected member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, the organization that votes on awards. Grant voted for Kevin Youkilis first, followed by the Angels' Francisco Rodriguez and the Twins' Justin Morneau. "I think the best way for me to sum it up is, in retrospect, obviously I was wrong," Grant said by phone. "My colleagues all, and people I respect an awful lot, thought Dustin deserved to be in the top 5. I had him on my ballot in some scenarios as high as No. 1 late into September. When I looked at the numbers that to me mattered most, OPS and batting average with runners in scoring position, he just didn't stack up with Youkilis at all. He was a laggard behind the others who had great years in the American League. Is it an error of omission that he's left off my ballot entirely? You could say that."

Now this just shows and proves that some of the writers are full of it and the reaaly should not have the voting priveledge. Word to the people.

oh well, there's always next year...

Evan who? Just a lame attempt by a dying craft (newspaper "reporter") to gain national attn.

Pedy is the man!

November 19, 2008  07:34 AM ET

I don't know what is worse, leaving Pedroia entirely off his ballot, or voting for Francisco Rodriguez as THE SECOND MOST VALUABLE PLAYER IN THE AL?!?! This guy should have his balls knuckled by that Japanese chick.

Then why was Rodriguez number 2 on your ballot...what a moron

November 19, 2008  08:39 AM ET

These votes are such a joke. It's like when you look at the college football Top 25 and see all the "Others Receiving Votes". How many times did this guy even see Pedroia play?

November 19, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Who gives a crap. All I know is you slap some white facepaint on Pedroia and you have Jack Nicholson's version of the joker.

good one.

let's give this writer a break....perhaps he couldn't see pedroia b/c he looked right over his munchkin arse.

who cares...the guy one the award and all people are talking about is this writer...

November 19, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I'm a Yankee fan and hate Pedroia but even I have to admit he had one hell of a year. To not even name him in your ballot (which has 10 spots no less) is ridiculous. And when the other 27 writers all had him in there it just shows that you are out of touch with the sport or have an agenda to push. This is why a better system needs to be put in place because some writers just do not get it or put their own spin on what the award means or are just inept.

November 19, 2008  09:37 AM ET

At least the writer isn't a homer and voted for Josh Hamilton. I don't think Pedroia is more valuable to his team than say Dice-K or Big Papi. Even Grant actually knows plenty about baseball and is a damn good writer around here. I mean he has written about a perennial last place loser franchise for years, my Rangers. He has to be given a break to write about those jokes. Man, though. The Boston fans sure think the world revolves around their team since 04. I used to root for you guys, but the media coverage and the fans make it sick to root for them. Another curse would be great for baseball! So go suck.

November 19, 2008  09:40 AM ET

It's not like this is the first time this ever happened. I'm pretty sure I remember a story of a Philadelphia writer leaving Mark McGwire off the ballot the year he hit 70 home runs. Regardless of what you think of Mark McGwire and his non answers at the congressional hearings on steroids, it's pretty ridiculous to say that there were ten more valuable players in the National League in 1998.

Pedroia got it done for the Sox all year. He even batted clean up for them for a week when many players were injured and he delivered. Now I hate the Sox and have already placed bets on the Yankees winning in 2009 but I do believe he had a great year and cannot argue with the fact that he won the MVP. I do agree that ever since they won the WS in 2004 that the media has jumped on the Sox bandwagon and in turn resulted in a large number of new Sox fans (read: bandwagon hoppers) appearing. It is what happened to the Yanks in 1996 and is why the Yanks are so hated. The Sox are now becoming part of that group that includes (Duke, the Cowboys and the Yankees) of teams that the media has shoved down fans throats and are now despised by other fans.

I can see not giving him a 1st place vote if you think homers aren't an important stat but to leave a player completely off the ballot shows ignorance. A new rule should be that if a writer is found to be completely off base (ie- key players that appear on the majority of other writers ballots are not present on theirs) they should lose their vote the next year.

I agree with your statement but I will add that the Sox have been in that group for about 3 years now. its not some new phenomena like the coming of christ. The media has been all about the sox for awhile now. and the only way it can change is if the Yanks dethrone them...the rays had a great year, but they don't matter yet.

Sox joined the group in 2004. At that point they went from loveable losers to the media having a hard on for them. This made their angry fan base more vocal and annoying and then made large numbers of bandwagoners jump on. In the late 90's you never saw anyone walk down a street in NY with a Sox cap on but now you see tons of them. Winning in 2007 made it that much worse and that is when people started to hate the Sox the way they once hated the Yankees. And yes it is about time the Sox got dethroned.

Didn't this clown leave Brady off the MVP vote as well?

We'll have to check his ballot but early indicators are that he did leave off Brady.

November 19, 2008  10:10 AM ET

I dont agree with Pedroia's choice as MVP but not considering him seriously is just wrong! What were you thinking Evan Grant????

No we think the world have revolved around us since 2001...It isn't our fault your team sucks and isn't competitive. Put a winner on the field, and quit feeling sorry for yourself.
