No talks between Warner, Cardinals

Late last summer, the Cardinals and agent Mark Bartelstein agreed to suspend negotiations to extend quarterback Kurt Warner's contract because of one unanswered question: Should Warner be paid as a starter or a backup? It took only a few weeks of the season for that question to be answered. Warner is a leading contender to win a third NFL Most Valuable Player award, and the Cardinals are on the cusp of their first division title in 33 years. Yet negotiations haven't resumed. Bartelstein has called General Manager Rod Graves in recent weeks, but the conversations haven't gone beyond pleasantries. "There's nothing new," Bartelstein said Tuesday. "I wish I could tell you something different." Graves declined to comment in detail Tuesday, saying he doesn't want to distract from the team's success. He did say, however, that the Cardinals want to re-sign Warner, but negotiations likely won't resume until after the season.

Warner's done after this year. Next Arizona starter = Matt Cassell.

Are you paying attention to the games? The guy is leading candidate for MVP of the league, has thrown for 3000 yards and 20 tds with 6 games to go. They need to lock him for 2 more years and let him finish his career there.

Warner will get his new contract after the season ends. The Cards are going to let edge go to free up salary cap room for Warner, Boldin, Wilson and Dansby.

You think New England will let him go? Especially if Brady isn't 100% by the spring?

Wow, what a blow that would be to Leinhart....I almost feel bad for the guy! How embarrassing!!

The Cardinals are being dumb as usual. They are basically begging Warner to consider other options at the end of the season. Who has a better shot at a Super Bowl next season? The Vikings with Warner or the Cardinals with Warner?

November 19, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Warner's going to retire, and the Cards will sign Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback - with Matt Leinart as HIS backup. You heard it here first, folks!

November 19, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Er, apparently second! Or make that third...

November 19, 2008  10:12 AM ET

They should get rid of Warner, start Matt, and get a decent veteran to put behind Matt. Matt needs to learn by playing. Sure he'll make mistakes but the best thing to do is play him and let him learn and make strides by playing in games. That's what a lot of teams need to do is let the young guys learn by playing. The season may not end the way you want but playing in the NFL is chess not checkers. It takes time to learn and isn't always going to happen fast.

I'm really surprised by how many people think they should just "get rid of Warner". I know his age is a huge factor, but the guy has done his job and then some this year. I would expect this from Philly fans (no disrespect intended) but not Cards fans.

He hasn't done anything to ward such a "get rid of him attitude". What's the problem with paying him as a starter but having him back up Cassell since you all are so sure Cassell will be a Card next year?

Hell, we'll take Warner in a heartbeat!

I agree 100%. Warner isn't going to retire, and he'll be back in AZ next year.

I would not bet on that. The Pats will wait and see where Brady is, and if not convinced they will sign Cassell. Besides, why would he want to go to Arizona? Please, his address is not changing anytime soon

November 19, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I guess they'd rather have Leinart playing. LMFAO!!!!

November 19, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Warner isn't done just yet. He has 2 more solid seasons ahead of him. For starters, you gotta keep Fitzgerald and Boldin happy... and Warner does that. They see the ball and the end zone a lot. Some guys just like to collect their pay... but, guys like Fitzgerald and Boldin are super competitors and want to win, they are warriors. Truth be told, this is probably their first taste of "winning" in the NFL. Do you think that they wanna go back to how things were in Arizona?

November 19, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Send Warner to the Raiders...they still need a good quarterback...(and coach, and general managing partner, ) etc....

I assume you missed half of the season so far, Warner was considering retirement. The Cards are not being Dumb and letting him consider options they are making sure he wants to play another 2-3 years.

...............a cardinals fan...........

Well he's exciting. His fumbles make every game close though. With these recievers, AZ needs to keep a good passing QB. The running games needs a few blockers. We are in the weakest division, but it's fun to watch a winning team after living near Detroit all those years
