Why Beanie Wells will jump to NFL

Ohio State fans should prepare to bid farewell to junior Beanie Wells as well during Saturday's Senior Day against Michigan. That's unless the Buckeyes running back is prepared to pass up a top-five spot in the NFL draft, which is the consensus projection among analysts and scouts despite the nagging right foot injury that has followed Wells all season. "He's the best player I've scouted and it looks like he's coming out," said an NFL scout who works the Midwest. "The fact that he's played through [his foot injury] is a good sign. He's a big guy, he'll carry the load, and that's part of playing in the NFL -- it's a long year and he's going to have to play banged up. I think that's going to help him." Wells still would have to go through physicals at the NFL Combine, but as he's making his decision, it doesn't appear worries about the foot, which caused him to miss three games early in the year, would be among the reasons to stay at Ohio State.

Wells is a player. Can't knock someone who brings it strong every play.

I'll be glad to see Beanie go! Lions better draft him.

November 19, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Beanie got speed and power. He's a first rounder if he goes, so it would make sense for him to make the leap.

November 19, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Who wouldn't go? Good for him.

November 19, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Is he a number 1 overall? who is better than him for the lions to draft. Is there a dominant offensive or deffensive lineman this year...I dont think so

November 19, 2008  09:10 AM ET

I don't blame him but as a fan I wish he would stay and be part of an awesome offense with Terrelle Pryor having a years expirience. Maybe Jamaal Berry will light it up next year as a true freshman.

With a 53% graduation of football players at OSU (according to Rivals.com) I say take the money kid.

This was supposed to be the year; the deck was stacked according to the pundits. And look what happened. No doubt it has been a disappointing season for all the Bucks and their fans, but Beanie has to be at the top of the list in his disappointment. He could have gone pro last year; he was a leading Heisman candidate this year; he has played with injury virtually all season (anyone who thinks he's back to 100% isn't familiar with a 100% Beanie).

Can't blame him for taking the jump if he does. But all of this season's promise could be his again next year, including the Heisman, and with Pryor and Co., a national championship. This fan selfishly hopes he stays on for his senior year.

Beanie is probably the most talented back in college football but you guys are loaded at the position, this should not have that big of an effect on next year. Plus you guys got one of the best freshman backs coming in next year in jamaal berry...the kid runs a 4.3...yikes.

Umm... may wanna check your facts there buckeye, Well is a Junior this year, meaning that THIS is the first year that he could enter the draft. So NO he did not "chose" to stick around for this season.

That said, as a RB, and even worse a RB with injury issues I'd enter the draft. Would love to keep Wells around, but the right choice for him is to play on sundays.

You people are dumb. Why in the world would the Lions draft a running back when they just drafted kevin smith? They need a QB, and the best QB coming out will be Matthew Stafford. No doubt in my mind that that's who they'll take

The Lions drafted the writer/producer of "Clerks"?

I think drafting QBs high is a waste of a top a top draft pick... Think about the QBs that were drafted in the top 5 picks, who turned out? The Mannings are about it...there are alot of Ryan Leafs out there. Then, some of the best QBs in the NFL are total dark horses like Brady and Romo. I think the top spot should be spent on an amazing lineman or running back.
Kevin Smith is not a starter in the NFL, he is a average change of pace back.

November 19, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Bye Bye Beanie! You will be missed!

Boom should continue to grow, Berry will be good. I think it might be curtains for Saine.

I understand the NFL draft rules, and by my comment meant he was good enough (big enough, strong enough, etc.) to go pro last year. Never said he "chose" to stay. You did. And by the way, YOU meant to say "choose" not "chose". You should learn how to write before becoming a critic.

November 19, 2008  10:55 AM ET

He fits the Steelers offense perfectly...oh well...have a good life in the pro'$...

November 19, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Wells isn't a top 5 pick. Greene & Ringer are 2 Big Ten backs with better stats and Royster, a sophomore, is comparable to Wells. Then you have to look at backs in all of the other conferences and this guy is a top 5?

November 19, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Chronic turf-toe will be frowned upon. Good power runner, marginal speed, no hands and no evidence of blocking ability (not necessarily his fault). Late second, early third rounder at best.

November 19, 2008  11:06 AM ET

He's good, I just don't think he's top 5. And there's no chance he goes to Detroit.

GatorBaitor, what?! Beanie is a guaranteed 1st-rounder. His speed is better than marginal. Ringer and Greene are good backs with good stats this season, but NFL scouts aren't worried about college stats. How many Texas Tech quarterbacks were drafted in the 1st round? It's about NFL potential.
