Yanks, Red Sox to battle for Burnett

The Yankees and Red Sox won't meet again on the field until April, but the two American League East rivals are preparing to square off for the services of at least one major free agent in the coming weeks. According to an industry source, Boston plans to be a major player for A.J. Burnett, one of the pitchers the Yankees are targeting along with CC Sabathia to bolster their starting rotation. Derek Lowe, another arm coveted by the Bombers, is also on Boston's radar. The Red Sox are not planning to make an offer to Sabathia, who already has a six-year, $140million offer on the table from the Yankees. But Burnett, who turns 32 in January, will certainly receive serious attention from Boston, which has already engaged in discussions with the pitcher's agent, Darek Braunecker, according to the source.

Wow, that's news worthy.............just figure that one out.

Wonder if the Sox are just going to run up the price for Burnett or are seriously trying to land him?

November 19, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Burnett, 32 and fragile. Who'll win this unlucky lottery.

I hope the Yanks dont end up with Lowe.

The sox should avoid this one. Braunecker translates easily into Buckner.....bad Karma

The Yanks will not be outbid by their poor cousins again. They were already embarassed by the Dice K fiasco.... they will outbid the Sox by a longshot and it will be up to Burnett to decide where he wants to play...

I think the Sox are runing up the price to end up with Lowe, and make the Yankees overspend for this guy.

Lowe does not want to be a Yankee, so thats fine I guess.

leave it to the Yanks to continue to overpay for a broken down guy who happened to have a good year entering free agency. We've seen this movie before. I think it was called Carl Pavano and the Pull Arse Muscle of Doom. We've seen the way it ends. On that note, spend away bombers!

As a Jays fan, I know he's gone, and I'm fine with that. What makes this better is that either the Yanks or BSox will end up with him (inter-divison Tampa would be okay too). He'll sign a 4-year deal worth about $70M, spend the first 2-3 years on and off the DL, and then have a stellar contract year again... don't get me wrong - he's ultra talented, but this is his pattern, and it's a safer bet than not that it'll happen again. He's not worth the risk and I'm glad someone else is taking it.

Shocker! Spenders 1 & 2 will contest over a highly-rated free agent? The two teams who have bid and won player contracts SOLELY for the purpose of denying said player to the other one? Those two teams? The most profitable franchises in the history of pro sports?

Them guys?

I agree. This does go along with the Sox recent theory on hiring Yankee killers though. The guy has pitched the Yankees well.

Hey Kennedy. I'll have to get back in my work clothes in a few. I forgot I wasn't posting on the Roy TD.

Yeah, the Red Sox would never do that...the Blue Jays would never do that. Does that omment even have validity? Well no. But onlt let that stop you.
It so happens I hope they don't get him unless CC goes elsewhere. But that comment is offbase, especially considering the arcticle.

November 19, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Ahh yes...the bombers. The same team that boasts about that stocked farm system that spews out worthless crap like the Melkman, Cano, Tabata, Kennedy and lets not forget...the flameout to end all flameouts.....Phil Hughes.

We were talking about the Yanks spending stupid money on all these free agents............HA!

They have not signed one yet this year. Why not wait to see who they actually get before thinking this is a return to the Eighties.
