Cubs eyeing Royals' Teahen

Ryan Dempster's signing makes the Cubs' starting rotation five veterans deep and seems to free GM Jim Hendry to get serious about adding a left-handed bat to the lineup. Free agents Raul Ibanez and Bobby Abreu have been mentioned, but don't be surprised if Hendry instead adds a lesser hitter with more flexibility, such as the Kansas City Royals' Mark Teahen. According to major league sources, Hendry spoke to the Royals' Dayton Moore about Teahen and David DeJesus at the general managers' meetings two weeks ago. Since then Hendry has concentrated on re-signing Dempster -- accomplished Tuesday -- or trading for Jake Peavy, putting other matters on the back burner. But sources indicate the Cubs-Royals talks will heat up with Dempster's deal done. DeJesus would not be moved cheaply, but sources hinted the Cubs could get the 27-year-old Teahen for a package built around either Felix Pie or one of two young infielders, Mike Fontenot and Ronny Cedeno.

The Cubs adding a guy like DeJesus or Teahen from the Royals, Hermida from the Marlins, or McLouth from Pittsburgh makes infinitely more sense than signing a declining Ibanez, Abreu, or the stone-footed Dunn to cover ground in the OF. It makes sense fiscally, it makes sense in making their core younger, and it makes sense in terms of spreading out 'need v.s. contract demands' for the future. Any one of these guys represents an improvement over last year's (now departed) OF options for the Cubs (Ward, Edmonds). I hope Mr. Hendry can get it done before signing one of the soon-to-be overpriced seniors becomes their only viable option.

Can someone please tell me how good Teahen is? I've never heard of him, seeing as he is from KC.

Pie is our main "prize prospect", so I'm assuming he must be pretty talented? Someone please fill me in, I'm very curious.

It makes me uncomfortable when I catch someone eyeing my Teahen.

Felix Pie and cash wouldnt do it? i mean ur getting a young stud center fielder and some cash to take care of contracts...or maybe josh vitters...never never never never never never never never give up fontenot or cedeno..they are important and they can only improve...if you take out fontenot you risk losing chemistry with zambrano (how you ask...watch before the games and the routine they do..the hammer and nail routine...they're best buddies)

Pie a "stud CF", what a joke. Ever hear the expression "you can't steal first"? He's as much of a stud as Corey Patterson. Ouch, did I really say that? Sorry Cubs fans, the next 100 years without a championship wont seem as bad.

No problem getting rid of Cedeno, he basically did nothing special for the Cubs. Down the stretch not only did he not hit, but he committed several errors in key games. Cut him loose if you can pick up a need.

DeJesus > Teahan. Teahan offers nothing new to me as a cubfan and with the addition of Crisp to the Royals squad, DeJesus would give the lefty bat, top of the order, obp and a bit of speed to the top of the order. Now. Pie, Cedeno + a prospect like donnie veal might get it done, reduces the need for us to bend to mcfails wishes.

I am going to have to agree with you on this one. Pie is a jok ein center, its like the sox saying Brian Anderson is a stud. Its honestly a loss either way, Teahan strikes out less and has more power, but Pie can cover more ground and would be a better outfielder. But stud should not be used for that guy.....ever

Maybe they are just on strike?

Or, better yet, because of some **** up NAFTA policy, they are actually outsourcing this labor to a cheaper employee. Which they will have to search the world over to find someone willing to work cheaper than a mexican! Undalay!!!!!!!!!

FMSD is sooo cool. I wish could be that funny. My life's dream, in fact.

Dream accomplished.
Good deal.

Dejesus or Teahan might be good pickups but never at the expense of Fontenot. In fact Fontenot would probably prove to be better than both of these guys if he got the chance to play every day

November 19, 2008  07:55 PM ET

I wouldn't trade Fontenot for Teahan straight up. Why would it take a package including Fontenot to get Teahan?

And we wonder why the Cubs still haven't won in 100 years? Dempster was 53-75 before last season and he's their priority based on one season out of 11.

That's very misleading and if you actually knew what you were talking about you'd know that. He has been a reliever for seven of his ten major league seasons. Most middle relievers have lopsided win/loss numbers, since they rarely pick up the win but when they give up runs it usually ends up as a loss for them. Or the short late inning reliever picks up the win when the first guy is yanked for a pinch hitter. And then he was a Closer. Who almost never pick up wins, but once again nearly anytime a run is given up it goes as a loss.

Most of his losses were on the between championship team Marlins, and the Reds. In 2005 he was 33 for 35 in saves, the best percentage in the league, and the only two blown saves he didn't give up the lead and ended up holding on and getting the win when the Cubs scored in the bottom of the ninth. And then in his first year as a starter on a good team, he goes 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA.

Is he as good a pitcher as Jake Peavy? No, probably not. Is he worth the 13 million a year? Definately. And the Cubs can use the talent they would have to have given up for Peavy to improve in places that are more needing improvement.

Besides, even if it's just one year... Dempster had a better one year than Peavy. Even ignoring Peavy's Win/Loss totals(which are in Dempster's favor. Ignoring them because Peavy played on the Padres and your team has as much an impact on your win/losses than you do), Dempster had a better WHIP, +era, ate up more innings, had more strike outs andgave up fewer home runs. The only thing Peavy had better than Dempster was a slightly lower ERA(.296 vs .285, but Dempster threw more innings and had a better +ERA) and had few walks and hits(76/174 vs 59/146, but Dempster had a better WHIP because he threw more innings).

I agree. Fontenot is worth a lot more than that. He found his power stroke this year and could prove valuable to any team. I don't know why the Cubs don't play him everyday, probably because they already have Derosa. All this talk about getting left handed hitters and we have Fontenot and Micah Hoffpauir in the wings, while they toy around with Fukudome. Maybe Jerry Angelo is behind this mess.
