McDyess passes on Celtics offer

The news is as expected on free agent Antonio McDyess. The Celtics made their pitch and the big man let it slide on by. The early word after his trade from Detroit to Denver was that McDyess would take a buyout and return to the Pistons, and that is looking even more certain now. Danny Ainge spoke to Andy Miller, McDyess' representative. "We spoke," Ainge said, "but I didn't get any sense that we should be optimistic about it."

Kind of a dumb move. Might be your very last chance to get a ring.

Disagree. You have to understand the pedigree of a guy like McDyess. He is built on loyalty and hard work. He is the kind of guy who wants to finish what he started.

It also doesn't hurt that he can't stand KG...

He wants Detroit. It's obvious now because if he was going to go anywhere else for a shot at the title it should have been Boston.

November 19, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Detroit took a chance on him when no one else would with his knee and his loyalty will return him to Detroit. And don't be so fast Guam to think Boston is the only place he can get a ring.

Dice is a arse plain & simple he is so inlove with the pistons but they wont win a ga damn thing!

November 19, 2008  09:49 AM ET

What??????? He doesn't want a ring?

November 19, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I can respect McDyess' decision, unlike some vets, he's willing to work for a ring rather than latch onto a contender to ride the pine to the playoffs.

November 19, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Agreed Funkadelic. Detroit is a contender anyway and he's confortable with the system. Why jump on the Celtics bandwagon and "ride the pine" in hopes of getting a ring?

Exactly. I think Dice is one of the players who knows the difference between just winning a ring and earning a ring.

huh? loyalty ?
didn't Joe D just TRADE him......????
- if he wants to go back- that comes off (IMO) like as a
desperate ex-girlfriend wanting you back after you screwed
her sister.....

- I do thoug agree with your comment about earning a ring-

I think Dice can understand the business behind why he got traded (it was 100% a numbers thing)... without taking it personal...

jgb, do you not think this was planned all long? If Dice hadn't known about the "arrangement", do you think he'd be going back? This is just something they do to get around an NBA rule. He has to make it look like he's considering other options to appease the NBA but he probably knew this would happen all along. He takes a nice month vacation, each team gets what they wanted and he goes back home to Detroit. He probably didn't even empty his locker.

Idiot

And the pistons have no shot at a ring?? Come on haters.

Is anyone really surprised? The guy wants to go home.

November 19, 2008  12:21 PM ET

the loyalty thing i understand. but "earning" a championship is a fallacy. a championship is "won" not by earning it necessarily, but by being in the right place at the right time. it is a convergence of events in time that lead to a championship, in any team sport. when talent, luck, skill, hard work, healthy players, officiating and chemistry all come together in one powerful moment, then a championship is won. magic didnt "earn" his first championship, because he was added to the most talented team, stayed healthy and had an absolute cream-puff conference to play in. and lets look at larrys first championship. in his first year he lead, at the time, the greatest improvement from worst to first in nba history. there have be bigger turn-arounds since then. but larrys was the best. why? because in his first season, larry was the only major addition to the team. since then, teams have had better won/lost turn-arounds. but no team made a better improvement from being truly a horrible team to the team with the best won/lost record by adding only 1 player.

with that said, in his second year, larry won the championship.

so did larry "earn" his first championship? while magic did not?

the fact is that larry didnt win until he had additional talent on his team.

and magic never won without talent around him.

so neither "earned" it, they both just were in the right place at the right time.

but on the other hand, they both "earned" their first championship by actually winning the championship.

so if dyce has played well enough in his career to be offered a position by the defending world champions, and accepted that offer, and then actually won the championship despite all the variables that will occur between now and a potential championship, including other teams intensely trying to knock them out of the playoffs, then i submit to you that dyce would have "earned" that championship as much as any other player. in fact more so. larry and magic fell into the right spot. (and of course worked hard in addition).

but dyce worked his entire career in such a way that he has "earned" the respect of teams trying to win a championship and has thus "earned" the option to chose. so if he choses correctly, and then performs well enough to contribute to a championship team, you could say that he would have actually "earned" his ring more so that many who have one.

He knows Boston was a one time lucky shot. This ain't the 50s or the 80s Celtics

if it was truly 'arranged' - it does make sense & I take
my comment back.....I just don't think McD is worth that
kind of effort at this stage in his career....
he's a decent back-up- but he ain't make or breaking
your championship run......
