Source: Giants to bid on Sabathia

The room is about to get more crowded in the auction for free agent left-hander CC Sabathia, if it hasn't already. An agent familiar with the situation said Wednesday he expected the San Francisco Giants to make an offer to Sabathia's agents in an effort to coax him into playing for what in essence is his hometown team. Another agent keeping tabs on Sabathia said he expected the Los Angeles Angels also to enter the fray at some point. Because Sabathia's representatives are keeping all offers private, it wasn't known if either the Giants or Angels had submitted formal bids or merely were testing the waters. Reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers were preparing to make an offer apparently were not true, according to those familiar with that club's plans. Either way, the Brewers' already slim chances of keeping Sabathia will diminish further with California teams in play.

If C.C. were to go to San Fran, you'd have your clear and simple pick for the NL West and beyond.

Guess they want the other end to the book-ends

That is what they said when they got Zito

Agreed- it's not like they have been lacking decient starters to begin with. CC will be a huge asset however a good everyday playing bat would still be necessary...

I find it interesting that they are not reporting money. Are they going to beat the Yankees offer?

Not like anyone really can but they might make him happy with batting and being closer to home. But sometimes having home that close to the fans can be a bit more than some would want...

CC is not Zito. If the Giants land CC, and the rest of the NL West remains stagnant, the Giants will compete if not win the West. I've don't the math before about if they replaced 30 of the spot starts from crappy pitchers with 30 games of CC they would have won the West last year. I don't feel like doing it again, but if pushed I may.

God I hope so. With the exception of him returning to Cleveland -- which is not going to happen -- the Giants are my next choice.

California fans, for the most part, aren't really like that, though, FACT.

Oh, yeah, by the way, the Indians are going to crush the Tigers next year.

It's pretty serious buzz, if only buzz ... the Giants won't try to match any Yankees offer, but columnists and bloggers have been putting out stories (see Yahoo , for example) that CC may be reluctant to join the Yankees at any price other than absurdtastic. Maybe he just doesn't like the vibe? In any case, the Giants are not a small-revenue team, and can actually afford to spend up to 250 million dollars on two starting pitchers. The question is, where is the bat going to come from? CC and Furcal on top of Zito and Rowand can be done (heheh, image); but CC + Furcal/shortstop + Texeira? Nukem (sic) can authorize going over $100 mil, but should he for 2009? In any case, I'm still sticking to "no contracts over 5 years to anybody".

Sounds like a pipe dream to me. An extra 20 mil goes a long way. People do give hometown discounts but not with offers on the table. We will see.

You are right CC is not Zito...but did anyone see this happening Zito? Brewers used CC hard the last month and a half, would you not be a little gun shy after what happened with Zito, what I mean throwing that kind of money at there again?

Yes.

Anyway, my point wasn't about would the Giants throw out enough scratch to land Zito, but that if they did, they'd compete for their division title.

I am sure you meant CC, and I agree if the rest of the west does nothing, having Linecome(sp) and CC it would boost the Giants chances of winning the West

CC has ALWAYS stated he would prefer the National League and the chance to hit.If SF comes up to close to what the Yankees have offered, he will be a Giant.........

I am thinking that he would probably go to LA Before the Giants though

Hey Slinkyredfoot, do you think the Giants have enough money to sign him and make any other improvements to their team that they need to make? I don't think he would be enough to bring them back to the playoffs.
