Forbes announced it's list of the 10 Richest Men in Football. None of them are footballers. Though playing the game is spectacularly well rewarded, players earn peanuts next to these guys. Top of the list is a Russian gentleman, but not the one you're thinking of. He's number two. Number one is Oleg Deripaska, who made his billions in aluminium and bought local team Kuban Krasnodar in 2004. 1. Oleg Deripaska (Kuban Krasnodar) $28 billion 2. Roman Abramovich (Chelsea) $23.5 billion 3. Lakshmi Mittal (QPR) $20.5 billion 4. Amancio Ortega (Deportivo De La Coruna) $20.2 billion 5. Francois Pinault* (Stade Rennais) $16.9 billion 6. Paul Allen (Seattle Sounders) $16 billion 7. Silvio Berlusconi (AC Milan) $9.4 billion 8. Alisher Usmanov (Arsenal) $9.3 billion 9. Philip Anschutz (LA Galaxy, Houston Dynamo, Hammarby) $8 billion 10. John Fredriksen (Valerenga) $8 billion

LOL - three MLS teams made the top 10...or rather their owners did!!! That is outstanding! HA.

Watch out Kuban Krasnodar is going to make a run at Champions League! Sorry...couldn't resist.

So, having a mega-rich owner doesn't translate to having the richest team (or titles)? Interesting.

Only recognize four of those names: Roman, Silvio, Paul, and Phillip.

What about the emir who bought Man City?

I was surprised not to see him on the list.

That is cheating 2 of the MLS teams are own by the same guy!

I thought that Berlusconi had to surrender his stake when he went back to being PM.

November 20, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Come on now...you are talking about Italy.
No...he did not have to give up much control of his stake...if any.

so, if big phil anschutz is so rich, couldn't he spend some of his money on better players? i know there is a salary cap, but he can spend more money on scouting and evaluating talent, can he not? that's a poor use of funds in my opinion.

Man City's owners have only been in charge for a few months. This list, or at least the research done to create it probably began before they took charge.

Maybe, but this type of research isn't too hard to do these days. Even if you're right, wouldn't a decent journalist update the report? If he's looking into this, the purchase of Man City was pretty big news.

He had to leave the board, he can still own the team, he just can't be the board president anymore.

Don't hassle Phil. If it wasn't for his big bucks, MLS, or soccer in the US as we know it wouldn't exist.

Houston had an off year, it happens. AEG and Anschutz don't take the Galaxy seriously on the field, it's just their travelling side show designed to makek $$$.

Actually, Man City is owned by a group of very rich people, technically speaking. This is a list of individuals. I think that's why they didn't make it.

Im relatively new to the soccer scene (2 er 3 years) but I can say that I disaprove of the growing dominance of the business side in not only soccer, but all sports. quite depressing. Takes away from the folklore of it, i think. maybe i should blog it up...
